Questions & Answers

How do I replace blades?

Asked by: Sammy
I found the instructions on the packaging to be worthless, mainly because they didn't show how to open the handle to get at the stored blades. I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUTVTomGfxk

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788
Asked by: Vito
Extend the blade all the way forward, then push down on the top button again, the blade will extend just a pinch more! Now depress the yellow (blade-release) button on the side and hold it; the blade will come out easily, it'll even fall out if you hold the knife so the blade points downward. To install a new blade: ensure the blade carriage is FULLY extended, depress the yellow blade-release button and slide the blade in! The blade carriage will not lock in the over-extended position, it will slide back just a pinch into the in-use fully extended position. It sound oh so complicated but once you've done it once, you'll laugh at the fact that you ever had trouble

Instant Change Knife is rated 2.4 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tool free blade change? Really? Bought this for work. I have another companies version of the quick change utility knife for home but this store did not carry that companies products, so this was the closest thing that they had. Sorry that I compromised. The quick change button really doesn't work well on this knife. After fumbling for about 15 minutes trying to get the blade in, I took it apart. That is just as difficult but at least I could get the blade in. Using the button to get the blade out is okay but for some reason the blade will not go back in with the button. I would not buy this again and I would not recommend this either. I would with the other companies product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hope you get a good one. I didn't. I'm glad some reviewers had no problem with changing the blade. My experience was different. The instructions were little help, so I went to online videos. They were clear and helpful. The trick is that you have to push the blade slider an extra bit beyond the "fully extended" setting. I understand that. But it won't go. I've pushed until my thumb is sore and my nail is cracked. I've used a flat screw driver to push down and forward. It just won't go that extra bit. I can put the blade in the end, but it won't lock into place and won't retract. Apparently there are good ones and bad ones. Mine is definitely bad and going back to the store. I won't get another of these.

This product is a prime example of how far they have fallen. Why does something as simple as a utility knife have to be so complicated? From just getting the embedded unrippable packaging out of it, to even being able to load the thing, every "feature" of this thing is unbearable. Don't bother consulting the instructions, they're completely useless. All I wanted is something that I can cut open boxes with and this product fell woefully short. The only easy thing about this thing is the aforementioned unrippable packaging, so that it can be easily returned.

It's a great utility knife. The tool-free blade storage is easy to use. For those having trouble changing blades: you have to extend the blade out all the way, then push the top button again and the blade will extend just a pinch farther, press the yellow release button on the side and the blade is easily removed. To replace the blade ensure the top button is fully extended, press the yellow button on the side seat the new blade. Beware that the blade will not be locked in the blade changing position, it will move just a bit when you first use it. This is the best utility knife I've ever used.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Returned The Next Day I was happy to purchase this thinking I'd have a knife with a quick change blade, but knew I was in trouble when it took 10 minutes with a pliers just to extract the cardboard packaging that went through the body of the knife. Once that was done I was frustrated to find that the blade would NOT lock into position. The yellow button didn't appear to do anything. I even unscrewed the metal housing in a bid to find out what the heck was going on. I invited several other people to have a crack at it but it just did not work. Brought it back the next day and got the simple HDX model.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ridiculous Impossible to follow directions to get blades out. I would give it no stars if possible. What is black button in back used for. Apparently nothing. Most useless tool I have ever purchased. Would return if I could remember where I got it. Black triangular insert fell off in process and can’t get it back on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome knife! I'm not sure what's up with the reviews from people who had a hard time changing blades with and don't like this knife. Retract the blade out as if you were going to use it, press the yellow button and the blade comes out. Easily. Press the button again, put a new blade in...done! The button is a lock that locks the blade in place. It stores up to five .25mm blades in the bottom part of the handle that's also an easy to get to buttosn press. There is no need to take this knife apart. It's not meant to come apart. It also has a belt cutter that I use constantly to strip small wires. I've had mine 4 years and love it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from an engineers knife if the yellow button does not release the blade and you have to open this knife (by removing the two screws) you need 4 hands to put this tool back together. clever idea but I am going back to a simple fixed blade knife in a holster...
