Questions & Answers

How do I replace blades?

Asked by Sammy December 2, 2017

Move knife blade slide until it latches into notch one step back from full blade extension. Then you press in on the yellow tab and pull the blade out. Reverse blade and reinsert into knife and make sure it catches slide properly.

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788

Asked by Vito August 27, 2017

Extend the blade all the way forward, then push down on the top button again, the blade will extend just a pinch more! Now depress the yellow (blade-release) button on the side and hold it; the blade will come out easily, it'll even fall out if you hold the knife so the blade points downward. To install a new blade: ensure the blade carriage is FULLY extended, depress the yellow blade-release button and slide the blade in! The blade carriage will not lock in the over-extended position, it will slide back just a pinch into the in-use fully extended position. It sound oh so complicated but once you've done it once, you'll laugh at the fact that you ever had trouble

Does a blade come loaded in it? After fighing to get the packaging out of the knife, I only counted two blades in the handle. Did one fly out?

Asked by Rhlist2 June 14, 2020

Well you did better than I did. I got zero blades in the package and yes it was ridiculously hard to open.

How do you get the blades out when you first get it?

Asked by Moe December 27, 2018

Push the button on the back of the handle and the bottom of the handle swings down. Blades are stored in there. None are in the knife when you get it.

How do I get the paper packaging out of the inside of the knife so I can put a blade in?

Asked by sapg May 28, 2020

I just cut it with a scissors and pulled it out.

my knife had broken in 2 places. what do i do for a warranty claim?

What a piece of junk!
Customer review from logo
Just purchased. Can not remove plastic hang tab, cut off tab to read instructions. Oh wait there are none! Cannot advance blade. Cannot open. Cannot use. If I’m going to give away money I’d prefer the charity of my choice not Stanley tools. Try again. Now I have to waste 45 minutes of my life to return because the packaging cannot be removed from the inside of the blade holder. Asked quality time f product. Who knows packaging stuck in the darned thing

Works great when you don't use the supplied blades
Customer review from logo
Took one star off for poor and incomplete instructions that are in 1-point type and packaging that is way too hard to remove. Took off another star because Stanley supplied blades that did not work with this knife handle. However, when I use bulk no-name aftermarket blades, the knife handle works perfectly. Why? Who knows? The Stanley blades have only two notches on the top, where the aftermarket blades have four notches. (See photo below.) It does feel like the knife handle's internal mechanism finds a notch on the aftermarket blades that it does not find on the Stanley blades.

i've had a couple of these knifes for a few years now. both are still holding up. like another reviewer here, i have broken part of the nose off of one (mine broke on the bottom though) and it still works fine. not sure how it happened, but it's just a battle scar... the only thing i can list as a possible "con" with this knife is when you have to take it apart. (ie; when you break a blade) it can be tricky to get it back together. not a huge deal though.

Great knife! I highly recommend it.
I love this Knife. I've got 4 of them now and have had a few of them for more than 6 years. I love the quick change feature and the blade storage in the handle is amazingly convenient and very easy to use. The feel and weight of the knife is nice and it fits in the hand very comfortably. I was surprised to see that this knife had a one star review from someone, because I love these blades. I got my first one around 2005 or 2006, and I quickly decided that it was the best utility knife I had ever owned. The only one of them I've ever had break, broke because I was trying to cut a really hard to get to cut-out in a piece of vinyl siding and I was using a hammer to beat on the top of the knife to drive the blade down. Given, that was not the intended use for the knife, but it got the job done, and the blade is still fully functional, the damage to the blade was purely cosmetic and it still works great. Not to mention that particular blade has seen extremely heavy use since the day I bought it. I guess with any product one buys they run the chance of getting a lemon, and maybe that's what happened to the other reviewer, because like I said, I have four of these and everyone of them is awesome. I actually bought another one a few days ago and it's feel and weight seem identical to the other ones I already owned. I'm very happy with this particular product.

This knife is worthless
Customer review from logo
I made a special trip to buy a utility knife and purchased this one for a project I needed to complete. After fumbling around for 30 minutes trying to access the blades and then insert one for use, I had to give up (something I loathe to do) because it’s impossible to keep the blade in place once it’s inserted. Why Stanley Tools does not bother to provide instructions is beyond me- maybe because even with instructions the product is inferior. I was not able to complete my project and tomorrow I am returning this knife!!!!!

Changing Blades takes 3 hands
Customer review from logo
I have had Stanley Utility Knives for over 50 years. They have been great. Could change blades simply even using the claw on a hammer to open the case. I bought this Instantchange Utility Knife since it looked to have a more comfortable handle. Putting the first blade in was difficult. Need 3 hands to put the knife back together! I would recommend this design for the Rube-Goldberg Design of the Year! Instant Change is a joke.

My go to knife.
Customer review from logo
I have used this knife for years, I own propably a dozen of them. The blade change is flawless if you know what you are doing, push blade all the way forward, past last stop and push yellow tab as directed, easy peasy. The curved handle fits your hand much better than a straight knife. Keep up the good work Stanley.

Product is sold with the wrong blades.
Customer review from logo
The blades that come with this knife do not fit, they are too small and consequently will not lock into place. How did this get past quality control and onto shelves? Just an idiotic way to tarnish your brand name. Other complaints are that the spring adjustment is flimsy and looses it's rebound over time and the stupid plastic tag you have to remove to use it. It's a shame as I would have given the product 4 stars if it came with the right blades and the adjustment mechanism wasn't so flimsy.
