Questions & Answers

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788

Replacing blade on Stanley knife 10-788
Asked by: Vito
Extend the blade all the way forward, then push down on the top button again, the blade will extend just a pinch more! Now depress the yellow (blade-release) button on the side and hold it; the blade will come out easily, it'll even fall out if you hold the knife so the blade points downward. To install a new blade: ensure the blade carriage is FULLY extended, depress the yellow blade-release button and slide the blade in! The blade carriage will not lock in the over-extended position, it will slide back just a pinch into the in-use fully extended position. It sound oh so complicated but once you've done it once, you'll laugh at the fact that you ever had trouble

How do I replace blades?

Asked by: Sammy
The secret seems to be to extend the blade positioning tab on the top of the knife to the utmost position at the front of the knife, depress the yellow tab on the side and carefully slide the old blade out and reverse it ti get full usage of both ends of the blade. If full blade replacement wanted, slide the old blade out and slide in the new blade. The blade must go straight in (not even a slight angle) and the downward angle of the blade must align with the end of the handle. Release the yellow tab and the blade should be locked in place. If not depress the yellow tab and reposition the blade.

Instant Change Knife is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tool free blade change? Really? Bought this for work. I have another companies version of the quick change utility knife for home but this store did not carry that companies products, so this was the closest thing that they had. Sorry that I compromised. The quick change button really doesn't work well on this knife. After fumbling for about 15 minutes trying to get the blade in, I took it apart. That is just as difficult but at least I could get the blade in. Using the button to get the blade out is okay but for some reason the blade will not go back in with the button. I would not buy this again and I would not recommend this either. I would with the other companies product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TERRIBLE PACKAGING/ FRUSTRATING ONCE YOU GET IT OUT OF THE PACKAGE (would be ok if it was just paper), requires another utility knife and small Swiss Army Knife scissors to open - It is an ok knife with a short razor blade clearance. Not as good as older models and really not that easy to change out blades. It does hold 3 extra blades if you can get the holder open.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ridiculous Impossible to follow directions to get blades out. I would give it no stars if possible. What is black button in back used for. Apparently nothing. Most useless tool I have ever purchased. Would return if I could remember where I got it. Black triangular insert fell off in process and can’t get it back on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from can't use it I cannot open the blade storage, and I cannot get the slide button to advance far enough to get a blade into position....should NOT be this difficult to use. I am taking it back and buying a much cheaper, easier to use model. Looking for Stanley tool quality - definitely disappointed.

I thought Stanley was the brand to buy and was glad to see on the packaging that these knives now are quick blade change. There were no instructions on how to remove the packaging or how to access the blade storage chamber (or mention that there even was one) or how to install an initial blade. The on-line videos (that I had to find myself) helped, but the product was so poor in design that following those instructions did not work and my thumb is too sore to keep trying. I finally got a blade in, but I can't get it to retract, so this is a one use product for me - back to the HW store to buy another brand. Stanley, don't make me buy Chinese. Strange to be pleased reading other reviews from experts that this tool is a joke. I have never seen any product so lowly rated on web sites.

Did an even exchange, looked at a youtube video to make sure I was putting the blade in correctly. It would never "click" into place. After trying for a half hour to make it click, I just used it with the blade seeming to be in place correctly. The blade immediately went all the way inside the knife and was stuck in there for good. Took it back and got a DeWalt and it clicked into place immediately. DeWalt is WAY superior. Do yourself a favor and don't buy a Stanley.

It's a great utility knife. The tool-free blade storage is easy to use. For those having trouble changing blades: you have to extend the blade out all the way, then push the top button again and the blade will extend just a pinch farther, press the yellow release button on the side and the blade is easily removed. To replace the blade ensure the top button is fully extended, press the yellow button on the side seat the new blade. Beware that the blade will not be locked in the blade changing position, it will move just a bit when you first use it. This is the best utility knife I've ever used.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible and frustrating I bought this thinking it would be sturdy and ergonomic. I can not get a blade to advance. I can hear the blades in the knife, but have no idea how to reach them. And once you use the blades, how do you put more in? I can not open it and instructions on the piece of cardboard with it amount to just a few words with no real explanations. So frustrated. Do not buy.
