AnswersI went and bought the special tool as well thinking it would be a cinch to take out. Instead, I stripped completely the stem extension with nothing else to grab onto. I used a screw driver and hammer to bust the stem extension into many pieces and using a needle nose plier to fish them out. This is the most difficult repair I've done as an amateur.

AnswersYou can use Moen 14272 Cartridge Retainer Removal, or a needle-nose plier to unscrew the stem by turning with the plier nose (the plier nose act like the 14272). But if the old stem is worn out and soften, it is better to use the Moen tool.

It was nearly impossible to remove the old stem. I bought the special tool to remove the nut - what a waste! I loved my Monticello faucet, it served me well for many years, but forget about changing the cartridge - I had to remove the entire faucet and buy a new one. I went with a Delta. So far so good. But I returned this entire extension kit. Don't bother.
