Q:Will this seed tolerate acidic ph soil created by pine tree fallings ?
by|Sep 17, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thak you for your question. Bonsai Dwarf fescue grows on soils that vary from strongly acidic (pH 4.5) to alkaline (pH 9.0) (USDA-NRCS, 2006b). Best growth occurs, however, when soil pH is maintained between 5.5 and 7.5

Q:We have a mixed lawn of ryegrass, red fescue and some KY bluegrass. Would this blend well enough as an overseed, or will there be too much difference in color & texture? Thanks.
      by|Aug 8, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out to us regarding Bonsai Dwarf Fescue. Bonsai will blend in with your current Ryegrass, Red Fescue and Ky Blue grass lawn. Bonsai is a wider bladed species VS the species you currently have in your lawn but Bonsai will add better drought and wear tolerance to the lawn. If Bonsai is seeded into a dense lawn the blades will be thinner than if the density of the lawn is more open.

Q:I need seeds to cover about 10 square feet area. How long is unused seeds good after package has been opened?

        Answer This Question

A:  Long term viability of seed is based in large part on how seed is stored. Storage in a cool dry place is best and can maximize the viability of seeds. Typically we do not seed grass seed drop more than 10% - 15% over a year.

          Clumping fescue
I have a sod yard that is a fescue blend and live in front range Colorado. This was as close to box store blend I could find with out spending 10x as much at the sod farm. It seemed grown in well but a few months into the summer instead of looking and blending with my sod in dog spots and over seeding I am having what appears to be clumping fescue with a lot of clumps with side ways growth and my yard seems to be wrecked. I just mowed so the photo isn’t as obvious.

            Good for holding slopes
We use for holding dry, sandy slopes and garden steps. Takes a bit long to germinate, but grows tough, dark green leaves that don't need much watering.

Fescue has a good root system so as it matures it should hold your slope.

Not as pictured - very disappointed
I've had a much different experience with this seed. Germinated fine but the grass is light green, grows mostly sideways, has very wide blades and massive seed pods that are impossible to mow. It just looks awful. In mid-summer it starts to go yellow/brown unless watered regularly (drought tolerant?). It does seem to self seeds due to the massive seed pods - but also spreads easily to neighbor's yards who don't want it. Not happy at all - wish I had never planted this.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Tall Fescue (which is the type of grass as Bonsai Dwarf Fescue), if left unmowed, will develop seed heads like all other grasses. If it is mowed regularly then seeds heads do not develop. Bonsai Dwarf Fescue has has been rigorously tested and is a TWCA qualified grass variety that has met a number of conditions for drought tolerance. So far so good
I spread these seeds out 2 weeks ago over a period of 5 days while spreading dirt and finishing out a small retaining wall. The seeds I spread on the first day started to sprout in 5 days. The dirt is some cheap filler/topsoil. No fertilizer. I water three times a day for about 10 minutes. This is in august in Tacoma, wa. So far i am pleased with the quick germination.

Stover Bonsai 3000 seed - worked very well for us.
Unsure of the diff between Stover Bonsai "2000" and "3000", but we got the "3000" at our local HD store. There was no Bonsai 2000 on the shelf, only the 3000. Bag looks different, but Stover is the brand and it's dwarf tall fescue. So: we tore out our old lawn, put down 2" of topsoil, seeded, and raked it over with soil in Sept 2015. Didn't get too tensed up about bag instructions, just put down the seed, raked it over, and kept it moist. No fertilizer. Seedlings started coming up in a week. Slowly filled out over the wet, mild winter (we're in western WA). Come spring, it took off. We commenced with professional fertilizing & weed treatment. By April it was gorgeous - thick and deep green. With regular watering, mowing, fertilizer (quarterly), it's is unchanged despite weeks of 85+ degrees. Know this: MUST be mowed tall - 4" minimum. Google Maps satellite pics confirm: we've the greenest lawn for miles around. No complaints here.

                    Best Lawn So Far
Location ; Fresno , Cal. Summer of 2015 , I hand tilled my small old lawn with a shovel, cleaned out weeds and old grass. At about spade depth . I added Gypsum and Soil Topper (lots of Hard pan ). Mid September I planted Stover Bonsai 3000 with 5% mini Clover . Within a week the lawn was sprouting . Now it is May 2016 and the lawn is lush and full. However the lawn needs to be mowed about every ten days or so. Feels nice to walk on barefoot.

                    Horrible results
Extensive soil preparation with Scott's planting soil, seeded, then covered with Scott's again. Seed came up in 10 days and attained 3+ inches in 3 weeks. After the first mowing, the fescue died! and now has mostly died out completely. Must water at least 3 times per week to maintain adequate color, however it is systematically dying to the ground and now reviving. Not a good product at all.

Did you add a pesticide or herbicide when you planted this? It sounds like something really shocked the planting bed causing a complete die off. If you attained the results you describe prior to the die off I would suspect there is something else going on there. We are sorry to hear about your disappointment though, please allow us to send you a free sample of another seed that we carry free of charge to make up for this.

Look closely at the ingredients. This one is genuinely grass seed with very little filler. The resulting grass I now have is gorgeous.

At 7 days it started to sprout. Give it another two weeks and I will be able to give some feedback.
