can the mats be controlled by an outdoor preset sensor to go on and off not a t stat with a sensor
Asked by: sam
Not sure what you mean by an "outdoor preset sensor". I used the thermostat provided with the system and it sends the required type and amount of power to the mats based on the subfloor temp above the mats. I imagine any other controller capable of sending the right power to the mats could be used to turn them on and off, but it seems that sensing the subfloor temp would be critical for performance and safety. My system works well using all the standard components. Good luck if you choose to use an outdoor preset sensor instead......could be a fire risk.

There are steel plates on plywood between joists. Is it OK to install this right below a metal plate?
Asked by: Ken
Yes. The mat installs a few inches below the plywood, heating the air which transfers the heat gently and uniformly. The steel plates between the sheets will not be a problem as they do not directly contact the heating mats.

Can your spray closed cell insulation between floor joists instead of using batt insulation?

Asked by: MHerman
We do not recommend spraying closed cell insulation on the Underfloor Radiant Floor Warming Mat. We recommend putting a barrier between the mat and the closed cell insulation to keep the insulation from damaging the Underfloor Radiant Floor Warming Mat. 6 ft. x 16 in. Underfloor Radiant Floor Heating Mat is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm feet finally Install was okay, a little time consuming, wiring four mats together was a challenge. Once I got thermostat programmed everything has been working great. Floor is warm and room has not gotten too warm from the floor heating.

When we built our house in Montana in 2010, I made the mistake of not putting in Radiant Heated Floors, especially under the tile in the master bathroom. Come winter time, that floor is very cold in the middle of the night. So late last winter I set out to find a solution without tearing out the existing tiles. I wanted something electric which would be quiet to run and efficient, plus have fewer moving parts. A few months ago, I came across SunTouch Under the Floor Heating Mats on Home Depot’s website. These mats go in the crawl space between the floor joist and they looked very promising, plus the cost was very reasonable. I couldn’t find much on the web about the installation process so I talked to a local Electrician. He too was unfamiliar with this product, but like me, he was intrigued. I was cautiously optimist about how well they would heat the tile floors, but I decided to order the mats from Home Depot and hope for the best. This really is a DIY project for the most part. I did all the prep work, ordered the mats, thermostat and insulation, and my husband helped me hang the mats. We had the electrician wire everything up to code and my husband and I put the insulation up. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with how well these mats work. Within just a few hours, the temperature of the floor was 85 and the room temperature was 70. The mats were installed 4 days ago and what a huge difference this has made to the comfort of the bathroom. I can’t say enough good things about this product. I highly recommend this product for your floor heating needs, especially if you don’t want to tear up your existing floor. You will not be disappointed.

The size and shape of the mat fits well between the floor joists as described. I did have to re-order different length mats because I assumed that there was continuous space between the joists, but there where were some cross members that I was not aware of. Something you may want to double check before you order.
