Questions & Answers

Do you need a flashing kit to install?

Asked by: Mfenters
Not if it replaces another unit which was curbed, and your roof already has flashing on that curb. It already has weather stripping mounted inside it, so you don't need to do anything other than removing your old skylights and replacing them with these.

I want to replace an old curb mounted dome skylight. It sits on a curb flashing that measures 26" x 26" at the corners. I would probably want this to fit over a curb at least 26 1/2" x 26 1/2" to accommodate any out of squareness of the existing curb/flashing. Will this size fit that requirement ???
Asked by: frustrated
Yes, I think this will fit, because you have what I had in terms of outer dimensions. I should have taken its exact measurements, I suppose, but it "just works" as a 2' x 2' skylight.

What are mounting dimensions of metal flashing? Opening is 24 by 24 or mounting dimensions are?

What are mounting dimensions of metal flashing? Opening is 24 by 24 or mounting dimensions are?
Asked by: Diego
Wish I'd measured them exactly and posted the measurements -- but according to Home Depot guys, things like 2' x 2' are "standard" and they stock some of the "standard" sizes like 2x2, 2x4, etc. The outer edges are something like 26" inches on a side (vertical overhang of your roof's curb) with internal opening 24" or so; it works fine.

Can it be installed on a flat roof?
Asked by: ARC
Not sure (because of not having read) what kind of guarantee these Sunoptics units have re leaking on flat roofs (Velux didn't honor a warranty on our flat roof) but these are high-quality units. I'd say, try to contact Sunoptics directly for this answer.

Prismatic 2 ft. x 2 ft. Fixed Curb-Mounted Pyramid Skylight is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.

Well-made welded aluminum frame bubble-replacing skylight; so far so good. It has several layers and is better thermally-insulated than the cheap skylights it replaced. It comes with weather stripping already in place, so the unit can quickly be dropped in. Quality is high; I noticed that the corners are smoothed and won't cut you. I'm just hoping the plastic holds up over time -- this is always the question with plastic vs. glass, but glass has its own issues. Perhaps unfairly I gave it a 4 vs. a 5 only because the screws are substandard; you'll want to be using your own 8 screws per skylight. No big deal. I bought four of these and recommend you do, too!

Sun optics will not stand behind their product. They will not honor or replace broken lenses. We have received them broken when shipped by their shipper. They say deal with the shipper to warranty the skylight. We drove to Sacramento to save $800 they wanted to ship $800 in skylights to the to SF Bay area. (Yes $1,600 total) After putting them in our warehouse, realized the interior of one of the lens was broken. They would not take responsibility claiming we stacked them on top of each other, which we did not. It is a shame, I like the thermo-break in the frame and design. To bad their customer service is horrible and they will not stand behind their product. Owner, C & A Builders, San Carlos, CA

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Far... If you want a skylight that you can see through this is not the product for you. We had a dome shaped skylight that cracked and we purchased this to replace it. The old skylight was clear and it would be nice if this one also was, but to be true to its function, it cannot be. This skylight uses prism-like qualities to maximize light while minimizing heat concentration, therefore has a frosted window appearance. It was very easy to install, and so far it has met expectations. We have yet to get to freezing weather, but the manufacturer has incorporated and thermal barrier... The real test will be to see if condensation concentrates on the skylight then drips on us. I believe it is an excellent value, buy it if you need a skylight as long as a primary goal is not to be able to see through it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for a screened porch I replaced 2 plastic bubble type skylights on our screened porch with Sunoptics curb-mounted pyramid skylights. The replacement was easy, and I like the diffused light. It eliminates the hot spot we used to get when the sun was shining directly through the old plastic skylights and it even gets a little more light into the interior of the house.
