Why is this so expensive?!?! Isn't it basically just an empty tank with some tubing in it? I doesn't have any moving parts or even a heating element. It works off your existing furnace and is over half the price of an actual NG furnace including installation!!!

Most of what first responder Chris said was correct except for output gallons per hour. This unit will supply 423 gal. of 140 degree water in first hour if boiler is supplying 180 degree heated liquid to it. It will supply 564 gal. per hour of 115 degree water (140 degree mixed with cold at useage point) at same 180 degree input liquid. The 841 gal/hr Chris quoted is for the commercial version which is model SSU-119C.

You say that there is a lifetime warranty for the residential version. Does this apply to the commercial version? We have 62 apartment units in our condo complex and assume we need to replace the old indirect heaters with the 119C!?

Multi unit housing is considered to be a commercial application so the warranty would be 7 years. It is not that the unit is going to work harder in that application and thus wear out. It all has to do with the insurance policies that cover the warranties. As the life time warranty is to the original home owner and the average home owner is in the same home of 7 years, the warranties are actually similar. When I became a plumber decades ago I was shocked to find out that longer warranties on a water heater did not indicate a better heater, i only means a better insurance policy. When it comes to indirect fired hot water heaters, here is my best advise in getting the longest life. Talk to your plumber or plumbers in the area and find out what lasts the longest given the idiosyncrasies of the water in your area. Although this unit is made of stainless steel I know of some towns in my area where the water does a number on the welds and the life is short. Where at I know of towns were people have had them last 25 years or more. In some places the Super Store does best and in others the Amtrol with its polyethylene bottle does better. And in a few towns in VT the tank of preference is the Triangle Tube because the tank within a tank design flakes of the particular type of sediment found in there water.

I HAVE AN APARTMENT BUILDING WITH 45 TWO BEDROOM ONE BATH NO DISH WASHER NO RECIR LINE WOULD PROVIDE SUFFICENT HOT WATER
Asked by: RICH
I use 2 of these for a 20 room ski hotel with 2 million btu boiler capacity. We have never run out of hot water and we experience high demand when the lifts close. You need to know your boiler capacity and max hot water requirements and do the math. A storage tank can be an excellent buffer if boiler is not capable of meeting demand.
