Can I use 14ga for cross members using 12ga for uprights when constructing a framed platform unit?

Yes, you can use the 14g as cross members with the 12g for uprights, but you would be better served using the 12g strut channel throughout for your famed platform. Superstrut also makes the angle brackets and spring nuts to assemble the frame.

I can't quite picture what you have in mind but these struts are pretty strong. I used one to hang swings by mounting the strut to a tree so it was level and mounting the swings on the strut.

I would like to use this strut with 3/8" attachment bolts to connect a heater. The strut channel ...

I am not sure there is a shorter spring version of the 3/8" nuts but did use them for a project with the shallower strut and cut down the longer springs with some diagonal cutters until the spring length worked for my application.

For a non-standard application: What is the distance between the beginning of one hole and the co...

Very versatile material for uses other than HVAC or electrical. I have used it to create a rack system on my Honda Ridgeline to secure my Yakima Outdoorsman truck bed rack to carry kayaks and it has worked out great. With the availability of the channel spring nuts and angle brackets I was able to fabricate a way to secure the J-bolts to hold the rack in place.

What I liked about the product was it's flexibility in use, as I purchased it not for the purpose it was intended. My son is a film student and he needed to construct a camera jib mount. The lightweight channel was perfect for the jib and easily supported the weight of the camera.
