The couplings are about 1-1/8 inch long. You might explore using a turnbuckle which is available in various sizes, although they are a bit more bulky. You didn't say what the use was.

I am not sure of the grade, but, I saw a stat on them that says they will take a 1,000 lb. static load. Hope that helps.

(What's this)
The 3/8 inch threaded rod coupling is galvanized steel and 1 1/8 inches long. The coupling is used to join and extend threaded rods or bolts. It can also be used as a barrel nut when the bolt’s nut is recessed and it is easier to reach the nut with an extra thick (long) nut. It can also be used to tighten 2 bolts together when you want to make a slightly loose connection such as folding legs on a work table. There can be many uses for this.

This is a great product for joining two threaded rods. The couplings are lightweight and strong. However, they can be used for other things besides just joining two threaded rods. I have used them on shelving and such, but, I also used one on my trailer. Now, this is not a conventional use, but, it worked very well. I have a leveler on the front of my trailer that has a cap on it that just wouldn't stay on. I had used velcro to hold it on, but, it was wearing out and I wanted something a little more sturdy to do the job. Enter the coupling. First, I epoxy glued the coupling to the trailer, and then using a 3/8" thumbscrew and an electrical conduit fastener created a hold down for the cap. The locknuts and washers allow the clamp to move around the thumbscrew. It has worked like a champ. I shot a picture of it so you can see how it works. Just flip the hold down over the cap and tighten the thumbscrew into the coupling. Because the coupling is longer than a nut, it provides enough room to tighten the thumbscrew far enough so it won't come out. Not exactly what they were designed for, but, these highly versatile little connectors will find all sorts of uses in my shop. Get a bagful and I'm sure you will find all sorts of uses, too.

Very handy if you are using Superstrut and threaded rod or bolts. I use these to connect threaded rod to existing bolts under my motor home to add support to the bins that are sagging. These are great to have in your shop if you use threaded rod/bolts. The threads are cleanly cut and fit easily on threaded rod or bolts. I would recommend using a liquid thread lock to be sure they do not come un-threaded.

(What's this)
First, what is "gold galvanizing?" After perusing the manufacturers catalog, I found a very clear description and a diagram of the process. The process does not include gold, but refers to the mottled golden color of the surface of the metal. The manufacturer's "GoldGalv® finish is made up of a multi-step electrogalvanizing and zinc dichromate process. The trivalent Chromium finish is applied over the zinc, producing a chemically bonded non-porous barrier for protection from moisture and air. The .5 mil electro-plated zinc and gold trivalent Chromium finish provide all of the features and protection of hexavalent Chromium without the use of the chemical [chrominum]." Apparently, the zinc dichromate fills in the pores of the zinc coating to keep moisture out. The rod couplings work great and thread on easily for use in extending all-thread to make up pipe and duct hangers. My most recent application was a little different. I basically used the coupler to connect two bolts located on either side of a 2 X 8. That way there are no exposed threads sticking out. I needed to make a stand-off to redirect a 1/8-inch SS tension cable and have included some photos of my mock-up to illustrate the concept. The 3/8-inch coupler is 1-1/8-inch long and fits snugly inside a 9/16-inch diameter hole.
