How this is the top layer? And can this be refinished?

Asked by sirspendsalot October 6, 2019

Answers

The wood veneer is only 1mm thick, so it would be extremely difficult to refinish this. The stain layer is quite thin (as is the wear layer) so it may be possible, but you'd be hard pressed to get into the groves without going all the way through the wood to the core. Therefore, I'd assume that it isn't.

Great looking product, price a little high but good stuff. I put in 160 sq. ft. in one bed room took about 6 hrs total. Went in fast after you get the first 3 to 4 rows in.

Horrible experience
Caveat: My subfloor is imperfect, and to make it perfect would be expensive. there was an old pergo floor over the imperfect subfloor for 25+ years. it was dated and started ti chip BUT never had any boards pop or bow etc. This floor is too thin to withstand anything other than a perfect subfloor. I have laid other floors on imperfect subfloors and have not had the problems i have had here. the click lock is way too thin to hold if not completely level. i have relaid the floor several times , attempting to "fix" the issues to no avail. i think a floor which is thicker and has a more robust click lock would have suited me better. the floor looks nice but i am already planning to replace. As others have also said...... it scratches easily as well...... oh well.. lesson learned.

The Sure+ floating floor gave us a horrible time during installation. What I feel is it may work on a perfectly flat concrete or a very small space like a bathroom, anything else will bring you lots of troubles. We installed it on our second floor bedroom, about 200 sqft. Our subfloor is MSB which is not as perfect. Since the boards are so thin and so are the groove and tongues, they don't tolerate imperfections, they ended up broke apart here and there. So we did it all over again (which is very painful). The second time, we installed another layer of plywood first to smooth out the surface. Even with that, the installation still had a lot of difficulties. The biggest one is that the floor is truly floating. Because the boards are thin and light, the bonding between the groove and tongue are not strong, a slight shake or move would move the whole floor, for example after hammering the new row in, you'll find the previous 2 rows all moved or break apart. A professional may have a way to do it well, but it definitely not something for a DIYer. Except all that, the color is good, it looks beautiful after installation.

Thus far I've installed this in 2 bedrooms and a closet over the past month or so (with more rooms to come), and have been pretty happy with it: the floor looks great, and is relatively easy to work with when installing. A few things to be aware of: 1. The wear layer on top is almost non-existent; this will scratch if you slide things across it, drop a metal object on it, etc. The wood is hard (since it's hickory) and so doesn't dent, but it doesn't take much to scratch the surface and see past the stain to the wood underneath. Time will tell how well it holds up to pet nails. This is the main reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5. 2. The interlocking joint areas are a little less regular and well shaped compared to some LVT products from other manufacturers (which use the same basic core layer); it's definitely a lower priced product, with several cracked edges. It's proven good enough thus far, but does require a lot of tapping to get it in snug. 3. Because it's a relatively thin core (in fact, I think this is thinner than some LVT I've worked with before), it will flex. Therefore, you'll probably want to ensure it's on a relatively solid surface. Our subfloor is OSB, and I found that has too much flex in it; I ended up putting down a layer of 3/8" plywood under this flooring to give it additional solidity. 4. The offerings for trim pieces/moldings are relatively slim, and the heights do NOT match up with the height of the flooring. This is particularly a problem for the stair nose (I found it unusable), but is also a consideration for the T mold and height reducer (which I've been able to use with some adaptation. So do bear that in mind before using this flooring. Overall, I'm fairly happy with this product: it's relatively easy to work with, reasonably priced, looks great, and with the added benefit of being waterproof. I have some concerns about long term wear, but I'm comfortable giving 4 stars based on my experience thus far.

I had to waste material and time because some planks had too much wax In the grooves which prevented the planks from interlocking properly. Otherwise the product looks great and makes the room stand out

Only three stars because of the difficulty we encountered with installation. It’s not like we are professionals by any stretch but we have installed two other brands before and this one has been most problematic. Once you get the hang of it the frustration is just a given and you have to deal with imperfections of the product. We like the rubber backing but often it is peeled back or torn out of the box. Some edges are not perfect so sliding tongue and groove can be difficult. Some pieces are bowed out of the package but lay down ok when attached to adjoining pieces. It’s a floating floor product and has some give after install. I’d prefer glue down on my next install!
