Hi Kathy, these are soft maple.
Hi HartwoodWorkshop, We recommend clear Polyurethane for unfinished wood to seal and finish any cut or rip. The EZ-DO gel is great, another good option is one by Minwax. Thanks for your interest in our product. I hope this answers your question.

Hi Isabel, The Swaner Hardwood 3 ft. L x 25 in. D x 1.75 in. T Finished Maple Solid Wood Butcher Block Countertop With Eased Edge are not intended as cutting surfaces, the knife will damage the finish. The piece is fully sealed in polyurethane and smooth finished on the face and four sides, not reversable. Thanks for the question!
Meagan, This pre-finished countertop is not meant to be used a cutting or chopping surface, the knife will mark existing varnique/laquer finish. It is also not recomended to place hot serving items directly on the surface of the countertop. Thanks for your questions & consideration.
It's a sealed counter top, not a butcher block chopping block. Chopping will damage surface for sure and damage the seal. I have a butcher block chopping block and it's about 5" thick and it can be sanded and oiled. As for heat, I have not tried nor would I. Mine looks great, but I use it as any counter top, trivets and chopping mats.
I have not chopped food on it, it seems like it would get marked up. It's great for rolling out dough. I've never placed hot pans on it.
After you make the cut, sand the edges with a 180-220 grit sandpaper and the apply a finish oil. Email me at gks@swanerhardwood.com for our recommendation on a finish oil that will match the existing finish on the countertop.
