How do you screw Gang-3 box to 2X4 stud. There are no whole on the side of the box

Asked by HZ March 19, 2021

Answer

Hi HZ, first off that is a surface mounted box has ko's for screws in the back, not made to sit on the side of a stud but guess you could just drill holes in the side to you can do that just make sure you drill on angle so screws will sit correctly. In the electric world we just just a nail on box and weather proof cover.

Did anyone else get a bad GFCI in their unit? If so, were you able to get a replacement?

In answer to Franks answer- thank you for responding. The reset button will not reset on this GfCI unit. I wired it correctly, then when it wouldn't work i used another GFCI in the same place wired the same way and it worked immediately. Though i have not set up as many as yourself, i have done a few. I took it back to Home Depot and they didn’t disagree that it was bad, but wanted to wait until the entire unit was back in stores before doing any sort of replacement. I have tried looking up the brand but have no success in locating a page to contact them directly.

HI bearzie, sounds like you have a GFI plug on the end of the cord, should all fit with no problem

Can two cords be plugged in at the same time? Is the cord opening big enough for two cords?

Asked by Brian October 21, 2019

Yes, UNLESS you are using a Float Switch which requires one plug to be plugged into the top of another. Then you should use an Extra Deep In-Use WeatherProof Cover.

Is this lockable?

It has a Hole in the Bottom corner that will accept a small padlock

Will the cover close over a 3-1/2" male plug

There are Extra-Deep covers that will accomodate very large Plugs. If there's a question, check the "Specifications" before you purchase it.

This kit has it all! Everything you need to add a GFCI socket outside except the wire to hook it up. I started by turning off the living room power and locating a socket inside to supply the power to the outside gang box and drilled a 1/2" hole through the back of the box and the exterior wall to the outside. I attached a 14-2 wire to the inside socket and ran it through the wall to the outside. The gang box has 2 knockouts on its back that are easily punched out and I found two 1" screws to attach the gang box to the outside wall - not using the mounting ears that are supplied with the kit. (And I used an ample amount of silicon sealant on the gang box back.) Finished the installation as per the instructions, and voila! Power on the deck where an extension cord was needed before!

This is the Taymac (Hubbell) 1-Gang outdoor receptacle kit (MKG40CS). It comes with an outdoor box, WR/TR (Weather Resistant/Tamper Resistant) 15 Amp self-test GFCI, and in-use cover with attached gasket (the cover can be closed with a power cord plugged in by removing the cord ports). Photo 1 shows you what comes in the box. If you’re looking for these parts for a job, buying the complete kit can save some money. I priced the parts separately and it came to over $32. The kit cost about $26. If you’re not an electrician, note that this kit comes with in impressive set of instructions. They are well written and well illustrated. If you have even a slight idea of what you’re doing, you should be able to install the kit. The box installs like most weatherproof boxes—you attach the mounting lugs to the back of the box then mount those to the wall (see Photo 2). Connect the wires to the GFCI next, then mount the GFCI with the screws, but don’t tighten the screws all the way (see Photo 3). Push the cover’s keyhole slots over the GFCI’s screws, shift the cover into the correct position and then tighten the screws (the gasket already attached to the cover, which is a nice touch). Photo 4 shows the GFCI after its been reset—it’s hard to see in the photo, but the green LED (on the right) is on. Photo 5 shows a heavy duty extension cord plugged in and the cover closed. The kit is very high quality and can be mounted horizontally or vertically (for horizontal installation, you remove the pin from the vertical hinge and install it in the horizontal hinge—very easy to do).

Useless GFCI
Bought this set for a front porch outlet. The complete set was mostly satisfying, but the GFCI doesn't work. i have no idea how to try and get a replacement. I took it to the returns desk at home depot hoping for just a new gfci outlet and was told that i would need to wait until that location had the complete item back in stock, couldn't get just a replacement gfci. not a great value when the gfci doesn't work!

I didn't realize it when I ordered it, but it has a 15 amp receptacle and I need a 20 amp. But that's on me. It would have been a lot cheaper for me to order the cover separately.
