Questions & Answers

Should Allure Ultra be applied directly over cement floor which has some staining & glue residue or should some sort of vapor barrier be put down?

Cement floor has been scraped and leveled
Asked by: bob
I tried to install this flooring as it was "easiest floor ever" according to box and videos. After following all directions, it took me 11 hours to install flooring on a 4X6 ft cement bathroom floor. I did use the plastic vapor barrier (not difficult), had the toilet pulled and went to work. First problem was I could not cut it to get around edges of things like the toilet hole or doorways. Forget the "score and snap" with a razor knife. This product is thick! It will last the apocalypse but I could not cut it with a razor knife or snips. I called the company and they said I needed a chop saw or a skill saw to cut it! I tried laying the floor and since you have to lock-in end-to-end and then side-to-side, the edges kept popping our when I went to click them in the opposite direction. After getting 3 rows down, the first 2 rows separated from each other and I had to start again. After 5 hours, I called the company again and asked for help. They decided my room temperature was too cold (55 deg, suggested 75-80 deg) so I cranked up the heat and left the product to warm up overnight). The next day a friend came over and we rewatched the video 5 more times and decided maybe I had started the project with the wrong edge of the plank headed to the left so we reversed everything and started again. Same problem for 6 hours the second day--> struggle to click-in the planks and then they separated as we moved to the next rows. It became clear there was one small "bump" in the middle of the bathroom floor that was a bit higher and probably lead to failure of the entire system. Overall, I would not use this product again. It may work for new construction with completely level surface but otherwise forget it. It is difficult to work with despite all the videos showing great ease. Cutting it is impossible without professional tools. I would suggest a different product or having it professionally installed unless you have tons of time to waste and enjoy frustration!

Do you have to remove the baseboard to install the allure flooring?

Asked by: Rick
We removed it because it was easier to install with the baseboard down, but it didn't appear to be required.

How easily will floor scratch? Dogs especially.

How easily will floor scratch? Dogs especially.
Asked by: Subs
I love this floor. I don’t have dogs, but my in-laws do and bring them over. We have this at our cottage so a lot of wet, muddy and snowy activity. We’ve had the floor for a year and it looks great and no issues with scratches yet. But again we don’t have a full time dog.

Take Home Sample - Allure Ultra 2-Strip Rustic Maple Luxury Vinyl Flooring - 4 in. x 4 in. is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 903.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking, easy to install, warmer I am a carpenter by trade and this is the easiest laminate flooring I've ever put down. The flexibility makes it extremely easy to work around those tight cuts. Save a couple small falloff pieces for tapping blocks for those few spots that need some persuasion. One review I read said they wasted a lot of material "lining" up all the seams, don't do this. Laminate flooring is supposed to look like wood floor and wood floors are all random board lengths. When you have falloff on one end of the room use it as a starter for the next course. And of course vacuum between courses if it's collecting dirt or sawdust. It's warmer to the touch and quieter to walk on (especially for my dog) than the regular types of laminate floors, I think because of the rubber backing. It also saves a lot of time and money because you don't have to use underlayment. My biggest piece of advice is Take Your Time, if you're getting frustrated with something take a break get a new outlook before you come back.

I have purchased 2 cases of this flooring to add to my current floor due to some wall modifications made in my home. I have installed approximately 750 square feet this flooring around 2103 with great results. The pliable vinyl would flex and allow all 4 edges of the tile to interlock creating a perfectly smooth and flush floor surface. Since that time, Trafficmaster has modified the design and now it only interlocks on the long edges. The new system called Droplock is designed to speed up installation by allowing the tile to be interlocked on the 47.6 inch long edge and then it overlays the short 7.5 inch edge of the previous tile without having to flex the tile to get a positive lock. The result is that the short edges are not locked down to create a flush floor surface. This may not be a big issue if the floor under it is perfectly flat, but this floor is sold as a product that can be installed over virtually any type of existing flooring. If the floor you are covering isn't perfect, the short edges of these new tiles may stick up slightly. :(

I waited over a year to post this review to see how this stuff holds up. Installation: In my opinion, incredibly easy. Our sub-floor took some considerable preparation, but once that was done this stuff went down very easily. It's very easy to cut and snapped together easily. Impression: It looks great. We get so many compliments on this floor. People are very impressed by it. It also holds up to a lot of abuse, in my opinion. With two toddlers and a very messy/energetic dog, this floor has held up miraculously. Longevity: This is why I give it 3-stars. For some reason, after a year, there are slight bulges on end-seams (where the short-sides meet). I've installed enough flooring to know what I'm doing and followed the installation instructions to the letter, and I still can't explain why these slight bulges are appearing. I've only noticed 3, but that's 3 too many.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1 month later, all is well. Took a bit to figure out how to best snap in short edge then snap in long edge without losing short edge connection or worse, messing up pieces already connected. Wooden block with hammer proved essential. Started with the hardest section of room first which was closet and entry where it meets with carpet. Was able to slide connected sections around as a whole to navigate snapping and placing under door jambs. The wide open sections are a breeze. Took about 6 hours to do this room. 1 month later and it's wearing well without any loose or popping joints. Plastic/vinyl smell is a little overpowering at first but left the windows open with ceiling fan on. Not really a problem. Took a couple days to 'off-gas' as they say. I've done floors using both Allure products, the glue tab and this snap tab. I think I glue tabs were easier to install but I have issues with corners peeling up in places. The snap tab more expensive and a little fussier to install but maybe the way to go in the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Since I have a conservative budget, kids, dogs and tend not to like carpet I needed a durable water resistant flooring alternative. After a week of research on durable flooring I found this product which looks just like wood, is a 100% water-proof and can take a beating from two young boys. The flooring cuts easily and installs quickly once you get the hang of the click lock system. Keep in mind since it is flexible it will mold to the slope of your floor so transitions will need to be very gradual. Flooring bends when you tap it into place and direct impact to the edges where the vinyl wood layer and under layers meet can cause the top layer to chip off. Flooring is warm underfoot and the perfect option for those who like affordable, low maintenance, durable flooring that looks like wood. I have this flooring in my living/dinning room, kitchen, a small bedroom and it will soon be installed over tile in a bathroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicer and more durable than our $8/ft real wood I bought this sight unseen from HD online. The pick-up in store was easy and professional and saved us on the shipping as these boxes are heavy. We saw sample product in the store(of similar product) and didn't realize this was a click product(no big deal) not the tape version sold in the store. Yes, it was more expensive than the offerings in the store but well worth it. The dark brown color has no major undertones and has a warm dark brown/black so could go well with about any paint color/combo. I installed it by myself in 3 hours. We used it in our kitchen and needed to install a transition molding piece for the ceramic tile surronding. I found a near perfect match at my local HD in a real wood prefinished MDR piece. I heard mixed reviews on the laminate moldings and wanted a longer piece than 72". It worked out perfect! All in all buy this if your on a budget or want the Ferrari for the economy car price. Many people have commented that it was nicer than our real wood floors in our bedrooms. This seems like it will last a long time and does not scratch easy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost excellent, better than good... Used in our hallway bathroom. It looks exactly like wood - and I do a little woodworking, so I am really pleased with it. Putting it in requires some patience. To "score and snap" it requires a sharp cutter and a very deep cut to be able to snap it. I ended up using my small Mikita battery powered circular saw for most of the cuts. However, the cut shavings are a huge mess, so do not cut it inside the house (looks like the rubbings from an old rubber eraser). Assembling the pieces on a long run where you have to attach the long edge and an end at the same time are a challenge, but you just need to keep the angle low and finesse it - it gets easier. Finally, I would suggest using the colors that have a deep pattern cut into them because they did not seem to scratch or show scratches when we were at the store (I used a key to run across samples). All that being said, I fully intend to use Allure in the master bath I am starting to work on. If I get the same results I will be very pleased.
