Product Overview

The Tenmat FF130E Recessed Light Cover is made out of a fire safe material and was specifically designed to protect your light fixture from insulation in the attic and to stop unwanted air leakage through your recessed light. The FF130E has been fire and thermally tested in accordance with UL1598 and IEC 60598-1 and can be used with IC, as well as non-IC rated recessed lights (see installation instructions for maximum lamp wattage and types). Most recessed lights are not compatible with insulation and oftentimes start cycling on/off after they have been buried with cellulose, foam, fiberglass, etc. The lights' malfunction is a concern and a safety hazard. Pushing the insulation away is not an effective solution since it creates air passages in the building envelope and wastes energy. According to the Department of Energy, recessed lights account for 50% of the total thermal losses of a ceiling. Tenmat, the leading manufacturer of high temperature engineering materials and fire protection components for recessed lights specifically developed the FF130E Recessed Light Cover to solve this problem and protect lights from insulation while simultaneously allowing the insulation to be continuous and uninterrupted over the whole area of the ceiling. Due to this improved air tightness and insulation, Tenmat users experience significant energy savings, noise reduction and draft reduction. The FF130E covers are fit within seconds and do not require any assembly or special tools.

A Little expensive for a easy tear cover, That's why the four stars. Did the job to cover my recessed ceiling lights from the attic side, stopped the winter drafts in the attic from coming through the lights. Also, you need to foam around the bottom of the cover to the attic floor/boards and any tears you make in it for wires to get a air tight seal. I sealed with foam about 3 covers per can, ( I foamed a lot, about 2/3" around the base. Tip: after you foam, try not to disturb the cover, Cover will break foam seal if bumped, until it dries/cures its hard as a rock.

I ordered 22 of these but it turned out only 17 downlights were accessible in our attic. They had the correct fit over the height of the lights. I made cuts with a box knife to allow for electrical cables. Plus I needed to make 4 slits at the base to accommodate the fixture hangers between the joists. Once the Tenmat cover was seated flat on the drywall ceiling, I used "great stuff" to permanently seal the bottom lip to the drywall, and also sealed the slit I made for electrical wiring. Finally the attic insulation that I had shoved back for the installation process was pulled back into place. With the cover in place, the insulation fit snugly against the cover and the draft through the light fixture was eliminated. This all started when the local utility did an energy audit of our home and pointed out that our downlights were acting like holes sending warm and/or cool air directly into the attic. Although a pricey solution, I highly recommend these covers versus other alternatives I had considered.

Used to cover NIC rated recessed lights
Recently an electrician replaced a ceiling light in my kitchen with a pendant light and to do the job he had to work from the attic. When he came down from the attic he told me all the recessed lights in my kitchen were NIC rated (no insulation contact). He said he made sure they were all clear of insulation, but they should either be replaced or covered for long term safety. He recommended these covers as a method to cover them and he explained how to installed them. I ordered 5 of the covers and in about an hour I had all 5 installed. The covers are made of spun stone fire retardant material. They are flexible and can be shaped to fit over the light fixtures. They are big enough that they do not touch the fixtures. In my case about a 3 inch gap was left between the fixtures and the covers. I used great stuff fireblock spray foam to seal around the bottom of the covers where they touched the drywall and to fill any holes I cut for the electrical wiring to pass through.
