I bought my goose down mattress pad in 2013. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is too warm usually. I am a warm person to begin with, & I cannot wear warm pajamas in my bed, even in winter because I sweat too much. I bought a goose down blanket to go over me, & absolutely cannot use it. I sleep on a down pillow, & wake up sometimes uncomfortably warm. My remedy is to sleep in the nude with only a top sheet & all-cotton blanket/bedspread for cover. Having camped outdoors directly in the snow in goose down mummy bag for a couple decades, I have come to learn that the less you wear with down, the warmer you will be. I recommend you let the down do it's job in trapping body heat by not puttting much fabric between your body & the material encasing the down. I cannot imagine where you got the idea that goose down "breaks down" at all Laying on down-filled material will eventually cause the down to lay flat, especially over the area you lay on the most. Just machine wash the matttress pad like you do the rest of your bedding, 7 shake out the cleaned down pad to fluff it up & evenly distribute the down. I have also been wearing the same goose down jacket for winter, & here in the east coastal region, it is very damp & humid, causing the wind to cut right through you like a knife. That jacket is like a warm wall against the cutting cold. "Wear out?" I don't think so. I think you have been unduly concerned over misinformation. I am 68 now, & have spent my lifetime using down-filled items, & gladly been paying the extra cost because down works so well & lasts (still) for so very long. I have & am still using all my goose down items. My down sleeping bag is 47 yrs old & my down mattress pad is good as new at 8 yrs old. I hope I have allayed your fears of having perhaps made a bad investment in down. I believe you have made a very good, long-term purchase, & want you to be confident in getting more down items. The best to you.
