Could you use this bag in your paper recycle bin?

Asked by: Debbie
YES. You are asking if these are good to LINE your recycling bin (something many didn't seem to understand). That is what I am getting them for, since they are no longer accepting blue plastic recycling bags in curbside pickup. We have single-stream recycling (plastics, glass, paper, cardoard all together in once rolling cart) and I have NO INTENTION of having to hose down the inside of the cart every week (and we have winter here too), OR deal with broken glass after bottles thrown into the bin. This will solve that issue. If it makes people feel better than can get a big fat sharpie and cross out where it says "lawn," but if you're not sealing it and just lining the cart, it's quite obvious. You don't take labels off other recyled papers so as long as not sealed, non-issue. Obviously when using for actual yard waste it goes in regular trash, not recycling, but I understood what you meant.

This product fails at the primary reason I purchased them for - the collection of lawn clippings. I've used these bags several times this spring/summer (2019) and they literally fall apart due to moisture from the lawn clippings at the very bottom of the bags. Yard bags should hold grass clippings for at least a few days if yard waste is collected during the middle of the week and you can only cut grass on the weekends. I typically cut grass several days after it has rained so the ground and the grass have adequate time to dry out so these bags should hold up. These bags are barely wider than the width of two paper grocery bags placed side-by-side so they are difficult to fill even with the yard chute insert you have to buy separately. They are essentially heavy duty paper grocery bags.

These lawn and refuse bags used to be sturdy and used to hold up fairly well when left at the curbside for pick up. In the past, I could leave the bags filled with grass clippings and/or other lawn debris sitting outside at the curbside even in a heavy downpour of rain. Not anymore. The lawn and refuse bags do not hold up (i.e., the bottom of the bags comes apart and any contents are spilled out.) Even when you start filling the bags with lawn debris, the bags tear and rip apart easily. After purchasing these bags for years at a price of around $1.99 for 5 bags, Home Depot recently raised the price of the bags. Yet, the quality of the bags has declined.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What happened?? These use to be pretty reliable!! I started using these bags about 3 summers ago. The build seemed solid. I could leave them out on the curb in a full day of rain and they would still be in good enough shape to not fall apart when picked up. The most recent package of bags I picked from my local Home Depot were setting out on my curb and after a 15 minute down pure of rain, all four bags had split open at the seem and all the grass fell out!! This had never happened before, so I figured maybe I just picked up a bad batch this time around. So about 2 weeks later, I go to a different HD store and get another pack. Didn't have to wait for the rain this time as the corners and seems were tearing apart as I was stuffing grass in and this has never happened before either. It's very disappointing that HD has lowered the quality of these. I may have to start looking a Lowes paper bags my next trip.

I found that it can't handle yard waste that sits in the bag , decomposing , for any length of time . It gets soggy where even a handful of waste sits. I know from experience. (I am talking about any green waste. ) of wet appear at the bottom and sides and eventually causes tearing with the stressing weight of a full bag This means that I can't fill the bag until just before the recycling needs to be put out creating extra work.

We have several years of shredding papers to do. We have a cross-cut shredder that looks like confetti when we get done. The only way our garbage disposal company will accept our shredded paper is if we use these bags. The bags are double layered and we have no problem with it tearing. Love these bags. This fall we will also use them for leaves.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What happened? I’ve been using these bags for years and truly loved them. They were thick and would hold up for a week getting wet without falling apart. This year, even half full, would fall apart constantly. They split at the seam after any moisture hits them. Hopefully they can address these issues. For now I’ll use the Sams Club brand which works flawlessly.

These bags have experienced a recent quality problem with the bottoms being unglued or wrinkled over or both, leaving open gaps and/or weak bottoms. I have to sort through each pack to see which ones are usable at home by applying packing tape to keep the bottom flap sealed. This used to be a good quality product but something has changed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bags have gotten cheaper recently Last year I would have given this product four stars. Somebody has change the specifications less natural craft paper in the bag and more recycled fiber. I have never had so many bags tear as I have since this change this season. And these bags are not even wet. Going to start shopping someplace else for my yard waste bags.
