Having learned to sweat solder at a very early age (seriously, I was 8 and my mother, who decided that the only way she was going to get a sprinkler system was to install it herself, taught me how) I was a bit skeptical of PEX. Also, I thought copper plumbing was supposed to last "forever", but it doesn't. Anyway the copper pipe in my house has been developing pin holes and random leaks over the past five years and I have been progressively replacing it with PEX, replacing the old trunk and branch lines with home runs back to a manifold. This uses a lot of pipe, but doing it this way makes the project manageable for a moderately skilled homeowner who can't shut down the house for a week, but can break loose for 3 or 4 hours to install one home run at a time. I prefer to join everything with crimp rings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PEX pipe is an economical alternative to copper pipe for water supply and other uses. It handles pressure well, doesn’t corrode, it can be bent into curves and alight angles, and has limited cross section flexibility which can help prevent bursting in freezing situations. It is easy to work with. You will need either push-on fittings or barbed fitting with clamps designed to work with PEX to make connections. Popular push on fittings make running new lines easy, no soldering of joints. While the fittings are more expensive than copper fittings, the labor saved makes then worth it, in my opinion. Plus, you can move, reuse, and change the fittings with a simple disconnect tool. The ½ diameter equivalent blue and red tubing gives you the standard cold/hot water pair. The color coding helps ease identification at fixtures. The tubing is marked every five feet.
