When installed underneath your gas or electric water heater base, this 2.5 in. deep drain pan will contain any minor discharge or dripping and thereby protect your floor from staining, bulging and swelling. And when something severe happens, (and they do!), like a major water leak or tank rupture, the drain pan will effectively collect the flow of water and drain it through the integrated drain pipe.       A:  It’s just cheap plastic that will hold a little water if there is a leak in the tank. Also keeps the tank from sitting on damp concrete or other floor. That should prevent it from rusting.

                  The quality of this pan seemed pretty good, not cracking...
                  The quality of this pan seemed pretty good, not cracking or breaking even with manuevering a few hundred pounds of a water heater directly on the lip; however, water got accidently sprayed into mine and we were unable to empty out the pan adequately, with water getting stuck under the heater and no way to get to it (without draining the tank and moving it). The drain hole is all set slightly up on the sidewall, meaning that water cannot complete empty out of it
