Product Overview

Thermal Expansion Tanks are designed for pressure control in potable water systems. The tank uses compressed air to maintain system pressures by accepting and expelling the changing volume of water as it heats and cools. It prevents the water heater pressure relief valve from opening, saves energy and eliminates a potential safety hazard. It is commonly installed in a domestic hot water system that contains a backflow preventer, a check valve or a pressure reducing valve. Measures: 15.4 in. L x 11.8 in. W x 15.4 in. H with 6.3 Gal. tank size, 11 lbs. weight and 3/4 in. connection size (NPT).
  • Protected pre-charge valve eliminates potential leak path
  • Prevents dangerous pressure build up, protects household appliances and fixtures
  • External baked epoxy-polyester coating provides a durable appliance finish
  • Exclusive polypropylene liner eliminates internal corrosion
  • MIG welding eliminates interior rough spots and sharp edges
  • All tanks are NSF61 certified
  • Each tank is factory leak tested

I'm impressed with the quality of the Flextrol 6.3 gallon hot water heater thermal expansion tank. It's a nice size and provides better protection than smaller expansion tanks. It's definitely equal to other brands I've used. It's ANSI rated and the diaphragm is rated -14-140 degrees Fahrenheit which is well within the parameters needed for using on hot water heater expansion. It come pre charged at 40psi and has a maximum pressure rating of 150psi.

Expansion tanks have been installed on hot water heaters since my town installed back flow valves on the cold water supplies to the home. In addition to the expansion tank I needed to obtain a water pressure test gauge to determine what my water pressure to the house was. On the expansion tank there is an air valve for either adding or removing air in the bladder contained within the tank. The Flextrol tank comes set at a precharge level of 40 psi. My water pressure is to the house is about 65 psi; therefore I had to inflate the Flextrol bladder to 65 psi. There were no instructions with the tank and the website listed on the tank was unavailable. I was able to go to YouTube and found how to install an expansion tank since my hot water heater did not have one and I was not sure why or how to install one. If you go to Flextronusa.com you will be able to download the Product Brochure #FTL01 which gives you some installation instructions.

This tank has a neat feature. They actually made a plastic cover for the valve that lets you customize the air bladder pressure. Most tanks just have that valve just poking out somewhere. The tank was easy to install. It solved the problem I had with the blow-off valve on my water heater discharging from over-pressure. The tank looked like good quality. No rough paint and the threads were smooth.

Added onto our home 5 yrs ago, including a 2nd water heater = plumbing problems ever since. Our steam shower requires a pressure regulator on water line, which doesn’t allow for back flow to main water line. This tank solved ALL plumbing problems we’ve been dealing with thx to a smart plumber!

High quality, stainless steel threads, & polypropylene liner. A star deducted for marginal packaging & inaccurate dimensions. The "Plumber's Choice" tank I received is made by Flextrol, and is labeled "Flextrol FTT12". It is a Made in Italy product, which is a nice change from the usual Made in China, in my opinion. Although the tank that was shipped to me was received undamaged, I see many reports of the Flextrols being damaged in transit due to the fact that they don't put any protection on the threaded connection, so it tends to punch a hole in the box if handled rough at all in shipping, making the threads vulnerable to damage. This packing oversight seems like a pretty silly place to save cost when weighed against the cost of replacing damaged in shipment product. The second issue is that this tank is actually 10.6" in diameter rather than the stated 11" in the listing, which was an issue for me because I use a custom mounting bracket, a Hydroclaw HC-11A, which sized for the customary tank diameter of 11". The correct exact dimensions are listed in the specifications section of the Flextrol website. Overall a great tank that would be 5 star, if not for two issues. Issues which won't be a problem if not having the tank shipped or using a sized tank bracket.

The Plumber's Choice 4.8 Gal. Portable Hot Water Heater Thermal Expansion Pressure Tank arrived on time. I unpacked the tank and found two small dents, they did not appear to be in a critical area and the tank pressure was at 40 psi. The box seems a bit thin and had no additional packing material.
