About This Product

ThermoClimb Adjustable Attic Stairway Insulator will keep hot air and air-conditioned air where you want it. An average attic will lose up to 27% of its total insulating properties without insulating the 10 sq. ft. of space over your attic door. An attic stairway cover or attic tent, such as ThermoClimb, will significantly increase your overall attic thermal insulation properties.

Q:Would this attic cover work for 22 inch by 54 inch

Answer This Question

A:  No it would not. You would need our 54” x 22” cover. However, I don’t see it listed on Home Depot at the moment for some reason. We can contact our buyer and you may want to reach out to customer support.

Q:Clarify, description says R factor is 3.8 but that can't meet current codes of 30-50 and certainly not be energy star qualified. So is 3.8 a typo? So it's 38? This point was never truly answered.

      Answer This Question

A:  I believe the r factor of 6.6 refers to the insulation itself (product specs) and 3.8 to its insulating capacity and that the difference is likely explained by the fact that it's not (perfectly) form-fitting and has a zipper and zippers are not airtight. That said, I installed one using a lot of staples and then running a bead of caulk where the fabric met wood, all the way around and in the corners to make an air-tight seal, which otherwise is not air tight at all. I don't see how you are going to get an r-factor of 30-50 in what's essentially a big hole in your ceiling without closing the opening entirely or investing in a very expensive solution (that won't ever pay for itself). I am satisfied, personally, having taken the measures that I have, that I've created a semi-insulated air barrier and am not hemorrhaging conditioned air as I was before, and at this price point, it's a good buy. Hope that helps.

Q:What should I measure? When the stairs are closed, should I measure the board between the frame? Or should I measure the opening at the top when he stairs are pulled down? Thx

      Answer This Question

A:  Open your stairs and go up to the top of the stairs. That opening frame as what you want to measure. Measure the outside dimensions and you’ll be good.

A:  Measure the opening at the top when the stairs are pulled down. It will be the widest opening. Also get a good staple gun to staple it in place.

To install this cover, I built a simple wood curb projecting upward from the stairway frame about eight inches into the attic opening. This curb was sized to provide the necessary clearance above the folded stairway mechanism and something tangible to support the cover and attach it to. It was attached to the stairway frame with mending plates and screws. The installation was easy to work out and the thermal effectiveness of the cover is very good. The temperature differential between the attic space and space inside the closed cover runs around twenty to twenty five degrees.

Good product, but have to build a frame around it as it does not hold itself up. Recommended using staples to attach it to the frame. If you use screws, put them through the area the zipper is sewn to.

I love this product. One thing they don't tell you is that you gonna need double sided tape or upholstery nails to attach the "tent". Other than that I think this product is going to save me some money on electic bill.

After reading all of the reviews, this was an 'easy' choice to make. I could tell how well this was working as it was being installed, I could feel my own body heat reflected back of the inside as I was supporting the attic cover whilst it was being stapled down to the attic ladder framework. i thought it might need some additional sealing at the corners but absolutely not needed, it is Winter here now and I cannot detect any drafts or 'cold spots' when I checked in sub-zero temps. - I am VERY glad I made this purchase before I had the attic ladder installed, and it looks like it will last a lifetime!

Quick solution to drafty attic stairs
After dealing with ice dams last winter, I figured out that the attic stairs were a big source of heat loss into the attic. This insulating kit looks to fix that. It installed easily in 30 minutes.
