Questions & Answers

Can you use this stain on pressure-treated wood?

Asked by: David
Yes. But read the directions first. I would let the pressure treated wood sit for a couple of months before applying a stain if it was me.

Does this product help reduce splintering of the wood? Does it fill small gaps in wood?

Asked by: Jess
Hello. Our products are waterproofers, which seal out moisture. They don't reduce splintering. Also, our products are meant to be applied thinly and are not thick enough to fill in small gaps in the wood. Regards, Thompson's Customer Support

Is it water based or oil based stain?

I have old based stained deck and would continue like to use oil base stain / sealer. Is Thompson's WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain Semi-Transparent Maple Brown oil based stain ? Thanks!
Asked by: Joe
This is a water based product. That is one of the features that I liked the most about it.

Can you latex paint over the top of this semi-transparent stain?

Need to paint each picnic table with a different primary color
Asked by: wasteofmoney1
This is a water based product. If the stain is solidly adhering to the wood then you should be able to use a good latex based paint over it.

1 gal. Semi-Transparent Maple Brown Waterproofing Stain Exterior Wood is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Deck Finish Product We used Thompson's Water Seal Stain on a very large deck at a previous house that we owned and had great experience with it. At our current house we tried a new deck coating product, and it did not perform well at all. We have scraped all of that off and gone back with this Thompson's Water Seal. I love this product. I won't ever use another deck finish product again. The directions are very clear and easy to follow. The 1 gallon can works great, and pours well. The stain is easy to apply. Clean up directions are easy to follow. I simply don't have any negative experiences with this product to report.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to apply, dries fast Like that this is more of a thin paste than just a liquid, it makes it very easy to apply with a brush. We applied it to brand new pressure treated wood on a trailer deck, and it looks great. I did two boards at a time and don't see any brush marks. Not sure how long it will last on a trailer but says 4 yrs on a deck so will probably depend on how hard we use the trailer. You can see a little of the green on the pressure treated wood since this is a semi transparent. I also did a regular 2x4 piece to see the color difference and it wasn't very different, just a bit lighter on the untreated wood. Overall very pleased with the end product. Love the easy water cleanup.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I live in Minnesota. Last year August 2016, I decided to use this product for staining my deck. I... I live in Minnesota. Last year August 2016, I decided to use this product for staining my deck. I put on 3 coats and followed the directions to a T. The product didn't even survive the winter before it started to flake off. I contacted Thompsons and they gave me the run around asking if I did the water test (Where you dump water on the deck to see if it beads up or soaks in. It needs to soak in to prove that it is porous enough to accept stain) and questioned me about the other directions. I told the guy who I was corresponding with that of course I followed the directions because I only wanted to do this once and have it last a few years. The guy said that the company stands by their product and that I would just have to send in the original receipt and they would gladly refund me. Who this day in age keeps a receipt for stain or paint? The answer is me from now on. I am not really as angry about the money as I am about the fact that I am going to have to redo this time consuming job. Not only will I have to restain, I have to strip off this inferior product adding more time and money. I will never again use a Thompson's product. Not only is their product inferior in the northern states, their customer service leave a lot to be desired. I bought 5 cans of this product and spent 2 weeks prepping and working on this project, since I have a large wrap around deck, just to have to do it again not even a year later. Unacceptable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff and good for 2~5 years depending on surface. The hardest part of doing this job is getting the weather and my available time to coincide. Cleaning up the overgrowth of plants takes more time than application. Perhaps Spring or Fall would probably be the best time to apply, when the plants can be trimmed back or not growing... Color / tone form gallon to gallon is good. They matched quite well. We used rollers, brushes and tried a 'garden sprayer' for the application. I used a 'long nap' 6" rough surface roller, and 2" 'disposable' brushes. No point in using a quality +$25 brush on the rough wood surface. I purchased a "Flo Master 1125d" specifically for this task last year. If you use a sprayer, make sure is is compatible for this task. The one I purchased at HomeDepot last year that was listed as suitable for this application. There are pictures of the paint/stain cans on the box. It proved absolutely unusable for this application; it was more of a mess than it's worth. My daughter, in her words; "I would love to write a burning review of that item", as she cleaned it.. We found the best method was: The long nap roller (with an extension pole/stick) was the fastest for the face boards, and brush to apply the product to end grain and between the boards. Pictures attached show a small section of the fence before/after. An aged, (+10 year old) section of fence (~14 feet long / 200 sq/ft) sucked in the preservative and needed almost a gallon. Obviously, your mileage will vary, perhaps I'm over applying.... But only another ~ 70' to go...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thompson's Maple Brown Waterproof Sealant I am using this to repaint my porch and wheelchair ramp at my home. It goes on easy, dries quickly and looks great. I am always satisfied with Thompson products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Please develop a new color line. This stuff is fantastic. I power washed my deck and let it dry. I painted just the stairs to try it out for color and coverability. It completely recolored the stairs and after the first rain, proved how it does waterproof the wood. The down side is the color choices. The maple brown I used was very orangish and my son and granddaughters said it looked like vomit. I tried to power wash the stain off to restain a different color and this stuff is impenetrable. Great stuff except for the color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked and mixed with another color well! I needed 6 gallons of stain to complete my deck project. I took a chance and ordered both maple brown and harvest gold and planned to mix them to achieve the color that I wanted. I used a Home Depot ½ inch nap-high density roller, and mixed three gallons of each stain with a drill motor mixing device and got the color that I wanted. I power washed my deck, and applied this semi-transparent stain with the roller. It was exactly what I was looking for. After 2 days of sun, a complete drying, my deck looks new again. The stain adhered well, easy to clean up, and the deck wood is well protected!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great color, easy to use waterproofing! This semi-transparent waterproofing stain is very easy to use and has soap /water cleanup. It is a bit thicker than I had expected (kind of like a pancake batter) and looks opaque until it dries. The thickness makes it easier to use with less dripping and mess than other waterproofers. The only mess I had was with trying to pour from the can (a longer pour spout would have been nice.) I tested it on some pressure treated wood, and after sanding it, the stain absorbed well into the wood. The maple brown color is a little lighter than it appears in the chart, but it looks good. I need to add a shelf on my cedar arbor to install lights on it, and this shade will match great! It does repel water well, as the beading shows in the photo. I do like that this can be applied on damp wood as well, since we seem to getting so much rain these days that wood hardly gets a chance to dry thoroughly. Although I enjoy staining with a water cleanup product, I don't like the idea that I can't store it in my garage during winter months like I could with my older oil version stains.
