Questions & Answers

Is the sealer transparent (as in no color when applied) or does it stain the wood a color?

Asked by: tnilc20
No, there is quite a bit of color. Very orange. We cannot thin it enough, we were hoping for what the picture represented and got a very orange color. Works best when spread very very thin. Wouldnt use this product again because of the color.

Can this be applied with tank sprayer?

Asked by: smurfman
Absolutely not. It is too thick to can through a normal "pump" sprayer.

Does the deck get slick after this has been applied?

I've heard that applying a waterproofer can make a deck very slick if it rains or gets wet. Has anyone experienced this?
Asked by: Mike
No, it was far more slippery before we used this; but we had green moldy stuff growing on it in spots, and that was quite slippery!

what is the coverage for 5 gallons

what is the coverage for 5 gallons
Asked by: bruce
The back of the can will say 300 square feet per gallon (multiply the width by the length of surface you want to treat). I found that because by boards were older and bone dry, plus I took the extra step to slather the surfaces in between the deck boards and the rafter tops, I used about 2.5 times that amount.

I've used Thompson's Water Seal products before with good results, but I probably won't buy it again. "Transparent" to me sounds like it maybe stains as well as seals. But in fact, it looks like really thin paint, and it impossible to make look descent. Maybe it seals, I don't know, but I now have $50 worth of wood that's ruined. It's the kind of result I'd expect if I'd bought some off-brand product from a strip mall dollar store. And Thompson? Cedar wood isn't pink.

It went on great....not how i wanted to use it initially but it all worked out (not a problem with sealer itself). i used it to stain my 10 month old pine fencing to help preserve it for a while. it looks really good - a big orange and red for my taste but my husband picked the color out so i can't complain! I would definitely recommend this product to someone.

Thompson's Redwood Cedar Transparent Water Seal Stain has done an awesome job for my deck. I have not had to replace any wood nor will I for a long time. Thanks Thompson's Water Seal I'm very pleased with your product. Sincerely Kevin Hutcheson

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pleasantly surprised it dries quicker than I expected and looks really nice. I ended up just using a paint brush and applied it to pressure treated 2x4's when making a wood shed. It definitely brought a nice look to a very basic looking wood shed. getting lots of compliments. I wasn't expecting to like the color, but it's really nice

I had built planter boxes out of landscape timbers and wanted to stain and protect them. I ended up going back to Thompson's oil-based product. The water soluble just doesn't soak into the wood. Never been disappointed with the oil.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ugly bright orange This has been the worst decision I've made in a long time. I've been wanting to stain my deck since last summer so I was pretty excited to finally get around to doing it. This ORANGE turned into a disaster. After having it ORANGE for 3 weeks I decided I can't take it anymore. I went back to Home Depot and asked what I can do about it. I was advised to buy a darker color and just go overtop since I only put on one coat. NO! My deck sat overnight with the new coat on and it resulted in just having my deck coating in dark baby oil like puddles. After spending 3 hours wiping it down with a pack of paper towels and a whole garbagebag sized bag of donation clothes it's still too messy for anyone to step on. Tomorrow I will go buy stain remover, rent a pressure washer, get new stain; and be done with this once and for all. This simple project has turned into an expensive, time consuming, frustrating mess all because of this orange junk. This is only my second time I've went out of my way to write a review, the first was my amazing mattress and now you orange mess. Don't buy..unless you like orange.
