No one is sure if the drain plug should be in or out when the planter is outside. Would the company that created these planters please provide specific directions? I removed the drain plug. When I water, the water comes out the bottom. How does the self watering feature work if the water comes out? Please help.
Asked by: Gigi
Drain plug should be out when planter is outside - drain whole is the overflow for the water reservoir. If you leave plug in and planter is out in the rain, the whole pot will eventually fill up with water and rot your plant.

To Multy Support Team: Please put instructions online. After reading all answers, I'm still confused about the following

Should roots extend into reservoir? How does soil above reservoir get moisture from below? Are stones useful to keep soil from falling into reservoir? Outdoors, keep plug in to self water, but remove to avoid risk of rain overfilling reservoir?

****Update: I did a little research on these Tierra Verde Planters. Turns out they are NOT "Self-Watering" or "Reservoir" Planters! There are two important tubes missing.... (they are NOT included with the purchase of these planters). The missing tubes are called: #1. Filler Tube. #2. Indicator Tube. This information was given courtesy of: gardeners.com How the Self-Watering Pot Reservoir Works. Due to gardener's.com's generosity, everyone can go to their web site and see how to convert these planters into Self-Watering Planters. (watch the video). Also: Someone else here on Home Depots website posted: Are these Tierra Verde planters BPA Free? (for edibles such as Tomatoes). I told "him or her" that I would try to find out.... After searching for quite a while, I discovered that (duh) NO!!! Recycled Tires are NOT BPA Free. However, these planters can still be used....IF.... the gardener places a "bladder" or "barrier" or "Cachepot" inside these planters. (one example: a pot inside a pot). This information was generously given by: The Micro gardener. I hope this post was helpful.

I would like to just place this pot on front porch under a roof. I plan to not open bottom plug to protect our porch paint job. I'd like to just place a purchased hanging basket example setting into top. Is there a idea how I can do this without it falling down into the pot? Other company products have a shelf to use for this purpose, but I don't think yours does. What I love about your product is I can leave it on porch all winter.

I placed a round waste basket upside down inside the planter. This allows the height you need without filling with dirt. This planter really is nice as it has good weight, so won't tip over and also is esthetically pleasing.

Would this material do well with holding water? I want to use this as rain collection by sealing holes and adding a spiget.

Will this hold water or is this recycable material more susceptible to cracking?
Asked by: Taut
Yes it will hold water, it doesn't have drain holes in the bottom.
