Yes very silver gray
I was also hoping for more gray and I am satisfied. The top cap is all gray tones. Some of the base blocks do have some tan tones and some are all gray. The color may depend on the concrete mix they are running so my experience may not be the same as yours. I have had a lot of compliments on the finished product. It took one whole day to complete the entire installation including excavating and the crushed stone base. It will take about twice the amount of stone that the instructions state.
It is 2-fold. One after a period of time the stones will begin to have that black, somewhat burnt look to them without the ring which is really not a big deal. The ring will help the life of the stones as well. Unless they are fired eventually you may have cracking, etc., but it won't fall all apart on you and you can always seal the cracks as they develop.
The modular blocks are of concrete construction which will not stand up to direct fire contact. Unless you build very small fires, the concrete will deteriorate due to the heat. I went with a 48-inch metal fire ring and placed oyster shells between the ring and the masonry to "decorate" the space.
They are made to fit together exactly as shown.
They are designed for a specific diameter. If you cut them, they will not interlock correctly. HD does not offer additional blocks. You might try contacting Titan directly but the shipping costs might be prohibitive.
Yes, these blocks were made for fire pits.
The entire kit was securely plastic wrapped on a single pallet approx 48"x 54". The store could not tell me the weight, but I estimated it at 1,200 lbs and had it loaded by fork lift into a half ton truck, which was a little light for the weight.
Came on a standard pallet, all but 4 or so blocks were well wrapped in plastic, with instruction sheet. Shipping invoice says its 1,820 lbs.
Yes, the metal fire ring in the center of the pit is necessary.
