I tried 6 glue traps first. It got it's foot in it and pulled it out. Same happened with it's tail. I got these and baited them with cheese and peanut butter. The rat cleaned them both without setting it off. Next night we baited it with a piece of cupcake. It must have been standing on the deadly end when it set it off cause we heard it go off and then a bump. Must have thrown it. Next night I turned it a little and that was the end of it. This thing was running all around our house. Starts upstairs, comes down into the kitchen and climbs up onto the butcher block and eats the bread. Saw it outside the house twice too. One person said to put the bait in a piece of panty hose. Well just the old fashion way worked for me.

    Worked...but needed some adjustments
Made several mods to it and it worked.1. NO MORE PEANUT BUTTER! I used some dry dogfood super glued to the trigger. Works like a charm.2. As many have advised, it is very had to set these traps and they are strong. The V shapes bar barely..and I mean BARELY fits in the notch. I had to take some needle nose plyers and bend the bar a bit.3. I super glued each trap to a larger pieceof wood to prevent them from being carried off or even moved after being caught.

Rats in the vegetable garden - 35 years in this house and now there's rats in the garden. They have been seen in daylight too and must be removed, so I bought 3 double set packages of Tomcat Wood Rat Traps (Home Depot #0372510), giving me 6 snap traps to work with. After 5 to 6 settings, the traps began to fall apart. The first one lost the rod that holds the kill bar in place. Then the next 3 each had one of the sharp U-nails fly off that hold the entire spring assembly to the board. One u-nail released while setting the trap & the kill bar hit my knuckle, drawing blood. I had to search the grass with a magnet before someone stepped on them. I tried re-seating them into the base, but the manufacturer, Tomcat, must have a jig that holds the spring assembly in place while it shoots the wire u-nails into the base. Even when using pliers to hold the u-nail while hammering in the sharp u-nail, I was unsuccessful in safely fixing the traps. They just came apart again. I scavenged the kill bar holder from one ruined trap for the first broken one and so far, that is holding. I do not recommend this trap. I find the Victor Rat snap-trap to have the u-nails set much deeper in the thicker base board and it has a heavier gaugue wire for the kill bar and spring assembly. I contacted Tomcat customer support after the first trap's failure and the cooperative rep said they'd send me a $2 refund, which was decent as at that time, only one trap was bad. Today I rec'd a check from them for $1.49, not the $2 that the rep promised as reimbursement (I have the transcript they sent me of our customer support chat session.) I cannot recommend this product. Some Home Depot stores carry both brands. Look at both Tomcat and Victor and compare before buying.

We are not sure why the trap is not being triggered, although some mice are truly smarter than we give them credit for. We would be interested in speaking with you further about this so that we can learn why the rat trap may not have worked. If you would be willing, we ask that you call us at 877-220-3089 and refer to your review so that we can make a complete report to our Quality Assurance Department. scotts

It works. Caught 3 huge rats the size of my hand on the second night. Your odd increase dramatically if you secure a nut to the trigger plate with string or wire so they have to yank at it. Cover the nut with peanut butter...they love peanut butter. More traps set the greater the chance.

Pins pull out of the soft wood.
Bought 2 weeks ago. I baited, set and placed it. After about 6 hours the rear pin pulled loose. I jerry-rigged a new 'base' pin and reset the trap. After about 4 hours a front pin pulled loose. Useless! Lucky the pins didn't pull when I was setting it.

The guy who bends the trip mechanism needs to be given more time on the conveyor belt.
