How do I make this dock float? Specifically exactly what do I need to buy while I order this 4.8 cedar dock kit to float this dock? I wish there was a kit with all of it so I could order everything :)
Asked by: Megan
Floating devices con be purchased from Hone Depot. They have many choices.

How long could one expect the cedar to last. Southern Maine. Thanks

With proper construction and instillation, a long time. Use deck screws for construction, they will increase the strength of the dock pieces. Easy to install and maintain.

Can this be used with aluminum poles to support the dock above the water or only with a floating system?

How do you coonect multiple dock sections to each other?
Asked by: DeanJolly
You should use steel galvanized poles of proper diameter. To connect 2 or more sections, use Tommy Dock parts. Google Tommy Docks.

Customer Reviews

4 ft. x 8 ft. Cedar Dock Kit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from exceeded expectations I never write reviews. Ever. But I will for this product. I needed a light weight low environmental impact solution for spanning a freshwater mountain bog area. The ability to adjust the level of the dock as the footings continue to settle in the bog muck is was what attracted me to this product. Delivery of the materials from Home Depot to the site location was an added plus. All materials were well packed, complete, and first quality. The planning tools on the Tommy Dock website made it easy to be certain I ordered all the right parts for my specific application. Assembly was simple and straightforward for a slightly above average weeked warrior like me who enjoys DIY projects. Connecting the sections together was exactly as easy as it shows on the website video, although my application environment was much more challenging than an open water lake would have been. The stability of the structure was ok when it was initially installed, but is now rock solid after having time to settle in place. I am a perfectionist and a hard man to please, but I am pleased! My only “complaint” is that I wasnt aware that pressure treated pine was an option. I only saw western cedar available through Home Depot. I would have preferred the pine as I think it would hold up longer, but time will tell.

I had this dock kit shipped from, Tilton, NH to Topsham, ME, and that system worked well. The boards in the kit were square & cut to length (by the robot saw) with precision, and the 2x6 and 1x6 cedar were mostly clear of knots. The one complaint I have was that the galvanized nails in the kit are cheap. The kit should include #2 deck screws instead of nails. If you live in a place where docks need to be hauled out before winter, or if you just want the dock ton hold together longer, use decking screws for assembly. The nails Tommy Docks sent would pull out over time with annual dock hauling/use. So far I have only assembled the docks and am adding boards and have bought ratchet straps to hold 4 flotation barrels in place (which will need some water inside them to float the dock lower in the water - how much will be a trial and error process). I'll also be buying and installing various expensive pieces of dock hardware, bolts, backing plates, legs, etc., so be ready for these costs too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I got this to use as a small platform or "floating deck" for my small backyard (not attached to the house). The quality of the wood is great. The cedar looks really nice. All the frame boards were straight and there were no cracks. Putting it together is easy. But you have to very careful about squaring the frame and using a level surface for good results. A couple of the decking planks were a bit bent but flattened out properly when screwed in to the frame. Some of the decking boards were not that precise in length. Maybe 1/4-1/8 off for a couple of them. Not a big deal but noticeable. In terms of value, for my purposes, the price, at about $5 per square foot, compares favorably to other "kits", whether wood or masonry tile. I plan to get a couple more to put some deck chairs on, etc. One note for people using it like me, the specified gap between planks, 1/2 inch, might be a bit larger than people expect or find attractive. If you knock it down to 1/4 inch, you will need to get one more 1x6x4ft board, which actually fits perfectly with that gap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding kit This kit is outstanding. Saves so much time buying it precut in a kit rather than cutting it myself. I also purchased metal corner brackes and smaller joist brackets for the inside support beams. Some or the 8ft wood was bowed a little but after nailing them together adding the inside peices they straightened up. Im building 4 of these, one will be the bridge, and 3 will be side by side as the main dock to make it an 8x12 dock.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid product, but time estimate is way off I bought 2 of these to replace aging floating docks at our summer house. Delivery to the store was fast and pickup was easy. My wife and I got everything home and unpacked it, ready to go. Time estimate was 18-20 minutes for assembly so I figured we'd be done relatively quickly....not quite the case. The dock came with a bag of nails to use for assembly. While nails are just fine to use, I prefer screws so that if anything needs replacing, it's much easier. I went out and bought a box of 3.5" and 2.5" wood screws instead. The cedar wood was in excellent condition, with few if any defects. We decided to pre-drill the holes so as not to split any of the deck boards. By the time we were done, we had spent nearly 3 hours putting it all together. Even if we had used the nails, there's no way we would have been done in 40 minutes as expected. I'm not going to down rate the product based on inaccurate time, but I do think the use of screws over nails would give this a bump to 5 stars. Overall I'm quite happy with the finished product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Value Dock on the Market! This is simply the best value dock system on the market today. Been looking for a dock for years but every one cost a lot more than $1K - $2K. I completed my L dock for under $900 in less than one day of work! The cedar decking looks fantastic. All wood components are properly cut and sanded. Assembly was a breeze. The modules are light enough that I can assemble and disassemble the dock by myself. The modularity allows for future expansion. It is extremely sturdy. A great value! A tip: In lieu of the $100+ flotation log, I bought 2 pcs of 2" styrofoam boards and made my own flotation log for $30. They worked perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice product The wood was true and fragrant, not that knotty. I screwed it. Some of the planks were a quarter inch short.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missing pieces I bought 3 kits and two of them arrived missing pieces (one was missing an 8ft 2x6, another was short 3 decking pieces) Some of the pieces were the wrong length. If I wasn't a carpenter with a saw at my disposal, I wouldn't have been able to put this together. Also, the nails included in the kit are just 6 penny galvanized. They wouldn't have held this together for one summer (plus the galvanized would have left big black marks on the cedar). I used stainless 3.5" screws.
