Questions & Answers

Are there any attachments actually available for this unit or is that just a way to get people to buy it?

I have looked on the Toro website and found nothing. I see nothing at Home Depot's website either. Same is true for Amazon. You would think that if there were attachments that they could be found on the Toro site - Nada!
Asked by: ElViejo
As it explains in the product description above. This trimmer accepts the Ryobi Expand-it attachments. This is stated on the box of both the Toro trimmer and each of the Ryobi Expand-it attachments as well.

Does the trimmer head spin counter clockwise or clockwise (while in cutting position-looking down at the trimmer)?

I ask becuse I just bought another brand and took it back because while cutting and trimming looking down at the timmer while its spinning the head rotates counter clockwise and throws all the debris back on my legs and feet. So I took it back. So wanted to know if this model does before I buy one.
Asked by: Keith
Thank you for asking, Keith. This string trimmer string head would move in a counter clockwise rotation. I hope thi shelps and we appreciate your interst in Toro! -Keri

Toro model # 51978 and 51958 appear to be the same except the shaft. The 51978 is $50 more. Is the straight worth $50 more?
Asked by: JB
The curved shaft model is lighter by about a pound.(11.6 lbs.) the straight shaft model is heaver (12.5 lbs.) The reach is less with the curved model and the cutting width is also less (17 in.) The straight model is (18 in.) The engine on both is 25.4 CC Full Crank engine and uses .095 in. line. To me it seem the shaft and attachment head on the straight trimmer is heaver.

2-Cycle 25.4cc Attachment Capable Straight Shaft Gas String Trimmer is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 531.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good upgrade I had the previous TORO model that this one replaced for 9 years. TORO has enhanced several things over my older model that died due to a busted drive shaft. First, the starting of the engine is a bit more refined. I had no trouble cranking it out of the box. Second the pull grip on the string is bigger and more comfortable and not as hard to pull as my older model. It is also lighter but doesn't quite feel as solid as my older model. The bump feed on the string head is EXTREMELY easy to use, almost to a fault. If the string trimmer is skimming over uneven terrain, you may accidentally bump the feed head when you don't intend too do so. Cutting power is very good but would be better if it came with a heavier string gauge. Do yourself a favor and buy an extra string replacement with a heavier gauge string. Another nice thing is that my old attachments for my old model fit on the new one. Way to go TORO for not sticking it to Joe Consumer's pocket book. I wold recommend this sting trimmer without hesitation.

I have been using this Toro Commercial power head in my Lawn Care business for the last three seasons (2016-2018). I use it with a blade edger attachment exclusively. For my weed eater (string trimmer), I use a Stihl commercial FS-90R. I have put the Toro Commercial power head through extremely tough/hard/abusive use while edging overgrown driveways, walk ways, sidewalks, and curbing. It has never stopped working one time. For maintenance, I clean the small air filter about twice a season. It is a very well built power head. I guarantee it will go head-to-head with any professional/commercial grade equivalent. The Toro costs $170 dollars all day at Home Depot. The Professional/Commercial grades equivalents will cost you at least $300-$400, or more. BOTTOM LINE: If you are looking for one of the best well built, long running, maintenance easy, headache free commercial grade power heads THEN DO NOT be afraid to buy this Toro. If mine ever goes down, I will buy another identical one at Home Depot. I highly recommend it.

It is also well balanced when it comes to starting it. I was able to cut some weeds that were somewhat tall. So I cut them in half first and then went back and cut them to the required height. I did notice that the tall weeds would wrap around the shaft and the rotating head. So I had to stop and remove the weeds from the shaft. When the time comes we will buy the shaft attachment for our TORO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review after one year of ownership I bought this trimmer and the Toro blower as a set one year ago. Both items have been great. They both start very easy both cold and hot. However the blower did need to have the carburetor adjusted because it was set to lean and as a result it was bogging down off choke. I'm told its because of emissions regulations. After I got it back from the shop it seems to have even more power than before. Back to the trimmer. I have had nothing but good luck with the trimmer. It always starts and runs great. Its one of the quietest trimmers I've ever owned. It has good power to cut through thick grass and it has a very large cutting swath. The engine is a full crank engine so it runs really smooth and like the toro blower it actually has two piston rings. Allot of machines today only have one piston ring which makes them wear out faster. The engine runs smooth and as a result your hands are not sore when your done using the trimmer. The engine also seems to be well insulated since it doesn't burn your arm when in use. The bump head is easy to load and holds about 25 feet of line. One other reviewer said they can't find the line for this trimmer. This trimmer like any other straight shaft trimmer will work with any brand of .095 line. I'm using the echo line and it seems to last a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! This is the third trimmer I have owned in 3 years. The last one I owned was an Echo that I purchased just a couple months ago and returned it because the trimmer head was not in fact universal like advertised. I replaced it with this Toro and it might not have the same HP as the Echo, but it kicks-butt. The first day I fired it up it went through all the big weeds my Echo couldn't handle and it's more ergonomic. I came back to the house covered in weed shrapnel even on my eye protection (just went through 200 sq/ft of chest high weeds) and told my wife "this thing rocks". Needless to say she just shook her head. This is the best trimmer I have ever owned hands down! Worth every penny.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from New design sucks I’ve used my weed eater for a total of 13’. I’ve have to tear apart the trim head every 2’. It don’t feed. It break off at head and you cant get to it. If someone from Toro actually cares, I’d like to know why and is there and alternate to this new twist wind idea. It sucks or mine is defective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FINALLY! Finally, a 2 cycle engine that cranks and runs like it should! I have never written a review on any store's webpage, but I felt inclined to do so here in case someone was going through making the same decision that I had to ......I purchased a 2 cycle and a 4 cycle trimmer at Sears this week and have just finished returning the last one for a refund ...What a JOKE! ...They both had like this 8 step cranking procedure that you had to do, even after they ran a little while and were warm ...Actually, they were harder to crank when they were warm ...Well, after returning both of those trimmers, I was left with a Craftsman hedge trimmer quick change attachment and then was searching for another trimmer that would work with it in the same price range ...After reading the reviews, I purchased this Toro ...This little jewel cranks and runs like a champ ...It also cranks with 1 pull after it's warm ... and my craftsman hedge trimmer attachment works like a charm ....The craftsman trimmer attachments are much better than what Lowes or Home Depot has to offer, but no one can compare with this Toro Trimmer for the price ...Thank you Home Depot and Toro!!!!!!
