This was my first ever purchase of a brand-new lawnmower after years of buying secondhand. I spent weeks researching various websites before choosing the Toro/Honda model. After about a month of use, I can day that this truly feels like a premium machine worth the price. It starts effortlessly with even the slightest pull, and seems way more fuel efficient than my last mower. I love the ability to hook up a hose to rinse out the underside! A couple early observations- the “Personal Pace” handle takes some getting used to. I find myself defaulting to a lower speed just to keep better control, since pushing the handle forward for more speed tends to make the front end lift up. It may just take some time. Overall I love this mower and my neighbors are enamored by the all-black paint job, which gets attention compared to the typical red. Great job Toro and Honda!

I bought this mower after doing some research. I liked the red accents on the height setting tabs that I read about, but the paint chipped as soon as I changed height! I guess it's not enamel paint. That was the least of my issues. The manual is horrible, with line art instead of photographs, showing barely discernable features and functions. The manual states there are two modes of operation, but in reality there are three... side, rear bag or mulch. After following the guidelines for oil and fuel, I was eager to use the lawnmower. Wanting to use the bag, I placed the bag to line up with the left and right side notches in the mower frame that the bag frame pins engage with, only to discover there was an issue that did not allow the bag frame to engage. I could force it in by manipulating the bag frame, but it was not a normal process. I suppose something may have gotten damaged in shipping, causing the back of the mower going out of alignment, but nothing really looked damaged or bent. I decided to forgo the bag and the mower started up without issues. I did like the Personal Pace feature but did not like the fact that I could not adjust the angle of the handle, but it was not terrible. What I did not care for was when I had to pull the mower back after maneuvering into a tight spot. When pulling the mower back it felt like the drive gear was somehow engaged, making it difficult to pull the mower back. This resistance happened intermittently, and the issue is mentioned in the owner's manual, instructing the owner to contact a repair facility for diagnostics and repair, I suppose. I did notice that on occasion the debris guard hanging down from the back of the mower, would flip underneath the mower when pulling it back, but I really didn't have time to trouble-shoot it to determine if this was the cause of the resistance I felt. I called and emailed Toro about this issue but they were no help. Apparently, their customer service and communications with customers is not secure, or they have idiots that work there. After communicating with them via email and telephone, I sent the mower back as per instructions from Home Depot, with a letter that had my contact information and a description of the issues. After about a week I received a call from someone who identified himself as John M. Toro, who said he was going to send someone to my house to mow my lawn, and that a bill would be left in my door, but I should not worry, because he would be using a Toro mower! Toro either has idiots that work for them in their service department or they do not protect their communications with customers, which apparently subject to hacking. I called their customer service department and the person I talked to pretty much thought it was a joke. I didn't find any of this funny. Honda, here I come.

After being able to look at the Toro self-propelled mower and the comparable model of Honda's self-propelled mower, my personal preference leaned more toward Toro's slide-handle speed control over Honda's thumb-paddle control. However, past experience with Honda's extremely durable plastic mower body has proved it can take a horrendous amount of strike force from the blade launching a large rock that I'm certain would knock a large chunk out of Toro's cast aluminum housing even though it is reasonably thick. My respect for the high quality of Honda's small engines has been gained by past experience with my old Honda walk-behind mower's engine lasting through 30-years of very extreme mowing duty and harsh punishment from frequently shredding thick-stemmed hedge clippings - while small engines of other brands on various other equipment didn't last anywhere close to that length of time under must less stress and demand. Therefore, my choice was to seek the best of both worlds by getting what has proven to be a good marriage between the Toro's smoother, more responsive and better pace matching control/drive system with the proven durability and longevity of a Honda engine. So far, it has proven excellent in all aspects, but I am certainly more cautious about looking out for any rocks or other debris that launching by a solid blade impact would probably prove fatal to the cast aluminum mower body.

Toro Disappoints!
I don't know why there are so many reviews attached to this Model (21389) because it is supposedly new for 2021. This makes me think some of the reviews are for another model ... one even mentioned the Honda engine ... this model has a Briggs & Stratton engine. I already reviewed this on the Toro web site so I'll just paste in my review from that web site. I am very disappointed with the Toro Model 21389. I am comparing it to my 2009 Toro Model 20017. I guess I should have been forewarned when I saw review comments and notes from Toro mentioning that you "may" need to push the mower forward a few inches to disengage the gear when backing up. I am finding that I have to do that over half of the time and when I'm turning the mower the gear will be engaged and, obviously, you can't roll a little forward while in the turn. Whoever thought this gear system would be better than the old system? Another issue is the Personal Place adjustment on this mower. I feel like I have to push the mower more than I should. I tried the adjustment it mentioned in the manual but it didn't help and it actually kept the mower in gear to where I couldn't disengage the gear at all. By the way, it works very well on the sidewalk ... just not in the grass! The Briggs & Stratton engine also has some issues - not idling properly when first starting it and it feels like it is going to die when I engage the blade. It also doesn't start on the first pull like my old one does. At this point I am ready to return it and use my old Toro mower until I can shop around. If this is how all Toro mowers now work ... I'll be changing brands.

Very Good
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve only used twice but I am super impressed? Starts on first pull and cuts real well. The clippings left are non existent due to the recycling technology.

Great Mower
This is one awesome mower. I loved my Toro 20333 and it served me well, but it was time. The 21389 is definitely an upgrade but it is also very familiar. Assembly amounted to unfolding the handle and turning the two blue handles that secure each arm of the handle in place about a quarter turn. The height of the handle is adjustable, by the way. I added the oil -Toro supplies an 18 ounce container with the mower and the Briggs' manual lists oil capacity at 15 ounces so after checking the dipstick twice, I decided to save 3 ounces for later. The manual says I never have to change the oil. The mower manual consists of a series of simple but descriptive line drawings. Once fueled the Toro started on the first pull and I was off mowing. It has a cast aluminum deck that feels a bit heavy but it is a reassuring type of heavy. The mower is nonetheless very easy to maneuver. Pulling the mower backwards is much easier than what I am used to. I tried the bag and it worked very well, but I have this thing set up for side discharge. The bag is well made and is simple to attach and remove, but I’ve got way too much lawn to worry about ferrying full bags of grass to a compost pile. I do anticipate using the bag to help with my fall leaf management, though. Every part of this mower is heavy duty. There is plenty of power and the personal pace self-propelled feature matches my stride perfectly. The mower cuts cleanly and evenly. The best feature, though, is the Spin-Stop system. As easy to start as the Briggs engine is, I’m not into seeing how many times I can pull the cord. The Spin-Stop system is definitely a plus. This is a good mower with the features and reliability of mowers that cost quite a bit more. As you can tell, I’m very happy with my purchase. I expect to get a lot of use out of my new favorite mower.

Noisey
After a couple of months it takes over 10 pulls to get it started. It is also the noiseist lawn mower I have ever owned. I can't believe it actually has a Honda engine! Every Honda engine I've heard has been very quiet, until this one. Will be trading it for something quieter. Probably the 21387 which is more powerful, and much quieter (surprisingly)

Stuttering issue is Real!
I have always had super recyclers and use them for my rental properties. In the last 3 years, I have bought several to keep at the properties. I have had older Briggs ones, the TXP Toro engine ones, and Honda powered ones. I have never had an issue the the engines. I read many reviews about the new 7.25 Briggs cutting out, or stuttering. I called Toro and was told that was an early production issue that has been resolved. I bought not 1 but 2 of these and both had the exact same issue out of the box. They stutter and sometimes actually quit all the time. If you even bum the mower or do a fast turn it will do it. There is something wrong with the design for sure and Toro is trying to hide it. I looked at the Toro website to see if others are still having the issue and they have buried it by compiling all the Super Recycler reviews together, to boost the rating. NO not buy this mower, get the Honda powered one or else a Honda mower...
