Questions & Answers

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: maria
I would change the oil at least yearly at the minimum even though it says no oil change needed but just to top it off. I don't care what they recommend a cleaner running engine will last longer than a dirty one. These engines are usually made to fail around 100 to 125 hours of use however. It is built into the plastic parts of the engine such as the camshaft and gears. Yes they are plastic so I would definitely change the engine oil yearly no matter what is recommended. We ......well at least I do......as consumers want longevity out of our mowers but they are a profit making businesses and want you to buy a new mower every 5 years. These are considered throw away mowers and usually when they are ready for major repairs they are not worth fixing when the bill hits 150 to 200 dollars or sometimes even more than a new mower. Think about it. Plastic internal engine parts. GM has used plastic timing gears since the 80s yet they were considered reliable. When I rebuilt my engines I always replaced the plastic that sometimes showed broken teeth and wear I replaced the plastic gears with Cloyes true roller and sometimes double roller timing chain and gears. Why......? Because they were a heck of a lot better in performance and more reliable. Not as quiet as plastic but definitely more reliable in my opinion as a mechanic. Plastic generates less heat and noise which is why they use them in the car and the lawn mower. It is a phenolic resin type plastic usually made to last around 5 years or 100 to 125 hours of use in the lawn mower. The reason they say just add the oil and not to change it is because they say less heat is generated by the engine because of the plastic overhead cam and gears, therefore the oil doesn't break down from the heat.......well.......I am sure that is true but you still have blow by from the piston rings I would think but I think they claim to have closer machined tolerances between the piston and the cylinder wall too, but for me I am changing the oil I have my own recommendations for longevity and the number one major recommendation is clean oil and a Pennzoil sae 30 weight in the summer months. But most people throw stuff away anyway after a few years and they are off to buy new........a small engine mechanic a retired veteran who has a lawn mower repair business in my county Has people who bring him mowers free that many times are usually only 2 to 3 years old but quit running. The people who drop them off don't even want them repaired because they want to go out and buy new. He usually changes the destroyed carburetor due to the ethanol in fuel and has it running like new or checks the internals like the plastic cam and gears etc. and has them running like new. So do I blame Briggs and Stratton for building a 5 year throw away mower.......? Not in any way. They know that most people don't want to change oil and they don't want a mower more than 5 years old so why make one that will last any longer anyway......? On their end it's .....smart .......very smart, but for the customer who wants longevity......MAN....... THAT SUCKS

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
If you have a long, straight, level yard the rear-wheel drive gives you a little more power for thicker grass. However, if you have several lawn ornaments, trees, and other obstacles in a smaller yard, the front wheel drive makes it SO much easier. Honestly, I like my front wheel drive model more. While you will burn through belts a little faster, they're much easier than trying to replace one on the rear wheel. And like I said, much better maneuverability.

Can you store it folded up with gas and oil in it ?

Asked by: bryzzer
Yes. I fill it with gas immediately before use, mow the yard (which burns some of the gas), allow it to cool (while I trim and edge), then I put the mower in the SmartStow position and stow. Works perfect. I can have two cars in the garage and move the mower in and out without having to move either car.

I have had a Tore 22" recycler mower with Briggs & Stratton engine for over 5 years now. i can count on 1 hand how many times it hasn't started with the first pull. After I changed the spark ( 1 time in 5 years ) first time every time. No issues to speak of. At the beginning of the summer I thought it was time to upgrade but I changed the belt and it ran like a brand new mower. I could not be happier with this purchase well worth the money. Even the tires are in great shape. I have a slope to my yard the machine handles it no problem. It doesn't even slow the pace down. This mower almost drives itself, completely effortless.

Although it is after limited uses, I am very happy with the mower for what I need. My lawn is less than 1/4 acre and this mower does a great job and is very easy to use. I'd never really used a mower so was a bit apprehensive about starting out but following the instructions was a breeze and using the product was as well. The self propelled makes a big difference and the SmartStow is a great feature to make it fit nicely in the garage. Expectations were exceeded and they were already pretty high.

Mower came essentially fully assembled - only needed to attach grass catching bag to its frame. Smart Stow feature makes it a snap to hose clean the under carriage after usage - no need to use the hose nozzle receptacle on the mower housing to do so when mower is in its down position, although that option is a nice feature. I mow some slanted terrain and have some tree roots above the surface of lawn - mower has plenty of power in self-propelled mode to handle the inclines, and the middle height adjustment of the wheels is enough to clear the roots. The immediate start (no need to pump/prime) is also nice. Pretty much a "plug and play" machine.

The throttle was in such a location that if you have smaller hands (I'm not petit and still had issues) you have to take run your wrists far forward and downward far exceeding a neutral ergonomic position. This would be sustainable if you only had long smooth paths but if you have to pull the mower backwards or sharp turns with no drive assist it wears the wrists down rather quickly. I also noticed that if you bump the front of the mower at all it stutters and backfires a little. I would assume this is due to the valve used to prevent fuel over flow. To be honest if it wasn't for the wrist issue I loved the stow away option and the quietness of the machine and would have kept it. As it stood, I returned it the next day.

Steel stamped decks are great until you decide that you're going to protect your rear axle and transmission with a piece of plastic. Then the steel stamped deck is useless. If you're mowing anything other than an already well-established lawn than go for it. If you may end up running over acorns, rocks, sticks, or basically anything hard, get a mower that doesn't fill the bottom of the deck with plastic. I've included a picture of the bottom of the mower for you to see. Once that black piece of plastic between the rear wheels breaks you will lose both the bagging and mulching function of this mower. Not to mention all the debris will start being pushed right up into your rear transmission and your self-propel belt will start slipping and breaking more often. Also, on this particular mower, I prefer the Kohler engine over the Briggs and Stratton engine. The Briggs engine has a bad gas cap that allows dirt and debris to get under it and into your gas. I've cleaned my carburetor twice this year already. If you're going to get a Toro, get the cheaper front wheel drive model with the Kohler engine.

I have only had this mower for 2 weeks but the cut exceeds my expectations. I mostly use the side discharge but it also mulches very well, cutting the grass into very small blades. It has a very deep deck and pulls quite a bit of vacuum to mow the grass very evenly.
