Questions & Answers

Is this model a rear wheel drive?

I have read through the comments and the specifications. I see high wheel drive but do not want to assume it is a rear wheel drive and order one only to find out its a front wheel drive. Can anyone shed some light own this, Rear wheel drive or front wheel drive? Thanks, Jim
Asked by: Jim
Twice in the description it indicates this is REAR WHEEL DRIVE. I'd ask the seller only because there are LOTS of models... is this really the description for this mower? "Rear wheel drive self propel provides better traction in all cutting conditions - let the mower do the work"

If you want to stop moving, will the self-drive stop or will the wheels keep turning and drag you forward?

Asked by: Jon
If you stop walking, the mower drive mechanism stops powering the drive wheels.

Can you use this mower without using the self-propel system?

Just looking at pictures I was wondering if you can use it without using the self-propel handle? Will the Blade Engaging handle come all the way back to the Mower Handle like a normal mower?
Asked by: MowerMan
It's too hard to push because you have to keep your hand on the switch bar for the engine to stay on. The switch bar presses against the Personal Pace bar and makes it nearly impossible to run the engine without pressing the Personal Pace Bar.

It really didn't feel like it was pulling right but since I've never bought a TORO before I figured that may have been normal. I cleaned it up & put it away. When I went to pull it out last week to cut my grass the back wheel fell off! OH NO! The back wheels are what propel the mower. I WILL be taking it back to the store in the morning. I need a new mower that won't fall apart on me after one use, from a company that I can rely on. smh I don't won't it repaired. I need it replaced! This should have NEVER happened. Totally disappointed, inconvenienced & frustrated.

First of all, the bad thing: upon first use the left rear wheel dropped off. I had to screw it back on. Not good workman quality. Once it is resolved, the mower works really well. Maybe it's just new, but it starts much easier than my previous TORO 20333 (you see I'm a loyal customer). The instructions about oil filling and gas filling are very clear and easy to follow. The large rear wheels do make it turn more easily, and the noise seems smaller than my previous Toro 20333. The folded handle saves a lot space in my garage! Overall, I like it a lot. I wish it didn't have the "dropping wheel" event in the beginning.

As reported by other reviewers, the left rear wheel on the mower I bought fell off after less than 25 feet of mowing. Reattaching the wheel a few times did no good as it continued to fall off every 25 feet or so. Obviously there is a design problem here, at least with some of the rear-wheel drive Smart Stow mowers. Thankfully my local Home Depot was great to deal with regarding the problem and fully refunded my money. I was satisfied with the look and feel of the mower and liked how easily it started, but none of that really matters if the wheels don't stay on the unit.

Bought this mower over the weekend to replace a perfectly good craftsman mower that was over 16 years old. I was looking to get a self propelled model since our new yard has VERY steep hills, and the craftsman was to hard to push up the hills...Well that being said now i am mad i waited this long to buy a self propelled mower! This Toro is amazing, pullled it out of the box, added the oil, and gas, pulled the starter rope and away i went, i made a slight adjustment to the personal pace setting because i could not keep up with the pace, slowed it down a bit(there are instructions on the left side of the handle on how to adjust pace) and now i can go up the VERY steep hills with one hand on the controls. I actually enjoyed mowing the lawn!!! If you are looking for a self propelled mower for steep hills, i would say look no further.

I purchased a Toro 22" (56 cm) Personal Pace® with SMARTSTOW® (50-State) (20340) from the Home Depot. After I got it out of the box I fueled it up with 91 octane. The mower started after 2 pulls like advertised (in the manual not on the machine) and ran for 5 minutes and stopped. Could not get the mower to start and run again. Had to take it in to an authorized dealer and they fixed the mower. "Bad fuel" The carburetor was clogged. The warranty "If anything goes wrong, under normal use and maintenance, Toro will fix it free!" excludes fuel because using fuel is not a normal use of the mower I'm being told. I was also told I should have used Non-oxygenated fuel, which I'm sure any gear head is saying while reading this, but as a normal non-gear head user I just followed the manual. Worst off I own another brand mower and it works on that fuel just fine. When I asked about why the other brand works but not the Toro I was told, different manufacture.

If I could, I would give it six stars. I was a little uneasy about the speed control system but after about 30 seconds of using it I was completely sold on it. The engine has more than enough power. As far as the rear wheel falling off, as some reviews mention, the first thing I did was take off all wheels, apply a thin layer of grease to the bolt, apply a little loc-tite to the threads, snug the bolt up and have had no problems. This is the greatest mower I have ever owned.

The Smart Stow is quite a nice feature and I'm glad I got this particular model. My only real complaint is that when walking at a good fast pace on a bumpy terrain it seems like it's going to stall out.
