If you want to use your 60V charger, we would recommend you purchase string trimmer bare tool model # 51830T. The Toro PowerPlex Hedge trimmer was designed and tested by Toro engineers. It is assembled in China with global components. Thank you.

Can blades be sharpened!

Asked by MrBee June 4, 2019

No. Lubricate them with the recommended oil, that assists with cutting. Oil the trimmer blade before and after each use. For additional information, view the Operator's manual online at https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/04/049a054e-f93e-43fb-9e70-551d9672b794.pdf.

The Toro PowerPlex hedge trimmer uses a 40V battery, so I suspect the answer is NO -- your battery wouldn't fit/work.

---- Excellent trimmer ---- This is an unbiased review that is unaffected by the fact that I received this product for free. As proof of impartiality, just click on my nickname and see the average of the ratings I have given over 200 reviews to date. ==== First impressions ==== No assembly required except for pushing in the battery. The battery came with a modest charge for storage purposes. ==== Operation ==== This trimmer has 3 controls that must be used to operate the trimmer. There is a guard handle switch that must be gripped in order for the tool to work. There is a trigger grip in the main handle with a safety button that must be activated first before gripping the switch. So, you hold the safety bar in one hand gripping it to operate that switch. Then you push on either end of the safety button before gripping the main switch. It does take a little bit of practice to keep from releasing at least one of the two switches while using the trimmer. You can see in my video that I frequently let go of one of the switches inadvertently. The trimmer has enough power to cut through 1/2" branches easily. The specs actually state a maximum of 0.71" diameter. I had no real problems trimming two small trees, about the size of large bushes. The trimmer is a bit heavy at 9.5 lbs. The handle rotates to one of 3 positions, upright, left 90 and right 90 degrees. There is a lock button to release it. I trimmed the two small trees and a larger bush and still had plenty of power left after starting at a level of about 40% on the battery. As far as I could tell, there is no storage mode on the battery charger. ==== Summary ==== Plenty of power. Fairly heavy. 3-level safety on operation switch. **Note: This review is to be moved to the correct product page for the Toro 40v 24" hedge trimmer Model 51491.**

This is a nearly indispensable tool for any busy gardener. We have a large number of shrubs and small trees in our yard, and manually trimming them had become a real challenge. With this tool, what typically would take 30 minutes now takes 3 minutes. It really does reduce the work time by 90%. The only thing that hasn't changed is how long it takes to pick up all the branches you've removed! Here's what I really liked about the product: (1) Ultra-sharp blades cut through small branches like butter, and can even be used on larger branches if held in place for a few seconds. (2) Three independent triggers must be held down to start up the blades, and two must continue to be held to maintain operation. The blades will instantly stop if either of the two triggers is released (one under right-hand fingers, one under left-hand fingers). This really helps with safety. It makes it nearly impossible for a child to accidentally start the blades (although removing the battery is a 100% guarantee of that). It also means that if you lose your balance or your grip on the device, it's very easy to get it to stop. (3) rotating handle allows three grip positions. (4) The universal battery used in this model is really ideal for this type of tool. I have a huge assortment of battery-powered garden tools, and the problem is often that a manufacturer uses the same battery for a lot of devices, meaning it's either too big or too small for some specific tools. Toro is using a 2.5Ah, high-voltage (40V) pack, which is perfect for a hedge trimmer. It enables very fast operation, but isn't overly-heavy due to moderate capacity, which isn't a problem as total load is fairly low in a hedge trimmer. If you look at competing products, most use much lower voltage batteries, or alternatively have huge batteries better suited to a lawn mower. I actually think Toro may be using a more advanced lithium battery here, as it's actually really small and light for its amperage and voltage rating. Here's what I wish were a bit different: (1) Storage of this device is very challenging due to its large size and awkward shape. It would be better if it had a storage hook or handle built in, for instance at the very back of the device. (2) The manual indicates that you should oil the blades before and after each use, but there's no clear indication of exactly how this should be done, and it's almost guaranteed to be messy, as there's no oil port. It seems you basically just need to pour the oil all over the blades and spread it around with a towel or brush. It's also not clear what type of oil the manual is actually referring to, although I used bar and chain oil (the manual calls for "lightweight machine oil"). Overall, this is a fantastic tool - I'm not sure how I lived without it!

We're so glad to learn of all the things you're enjoying about this trimmer! We always appreciate customer feedback because what's important to you is important to us. We have a clarification on oiling the blades. A light weight machine oil is common and sold at most stores. 3 in 1 oil and sewing machine oil are two examples. It typically comes in a container with an easy pour top that you apply directly to the blades preventing the mess. We hope this helps! If you'd like any additional assistance, don't hesitate to call us at 888-384-9939. Thanks! Toro

Works Very Well!
The " POWERPLEX 24 IN. 40-VOLT MAX LITHIUM-ION CORDLESS HEDGE TRIMMER", Works very well. I was pleasantly surprised on the amount of power this cordless hedge trimmer has! But first things first, when you get your trimmer the 1st thing you need to do is charge your battery. The battery and charger are included. The battery has an button that shows you the level of charge of the battery. Once your battery is charged you are ready to go. The trimmer handle can turn 90 degrees to the left or right depending on the direction that you are trimming. I like the safety features too. You have to have both hands on the trimmer in order for it to work. The forward handle has a bar that must be pressed along with the button next to the trigger. Once these 2 button/bar in pressed the trigger can be pulled. The trimmer is able to cut some pretty thick branches. The cutting blades are sharp and work very well. I like this trimmer and will use it often because no cords are needed so you won't be confined anymore.

I/we live in the Las Vegas area, and as you can/could imagine it's been extremely hot for the last few weeks here, so I haven't had the opportunity to use my new Trimmer as of yet; just as soon as it gets a little cooler, I'll be trying it out.

This is difficult to rate. I like the hedge trimmer itself a lot, but I purchased it with battery pack and charger, and the battery pack was totally not functional. It wouldn't even begin to charge. So, I returned it to a Toro dealer and am waiting for a new one to arrive. I have another of the exact same battery that I got with a couple of other Toro tools, and it works fine, so it was the new battery that just had something very wrong with it.
