How easy is this Toro 20353 AWD mower to pull backwards from an obstriction such as a fence ?

Asked by: Steve
It's easy to pull backwards as long as wheel bearings never get wet!

Really looking at this mower, especially as I get older. A question about gas. It says 10-15% ethanol is allowed, but is non-ethanol gas better? If so, should I still use an additive?
Asked by: MowerMikeInGa
Mike is right about ethanol and aluminum not getting along well. Just spent the afternoon cleaning the carburetor on my small self propelled Honda mower. It looked like some ethanol etched some of the aluminum carburetor bowl. That suspension clogged the main carburetor jet. I took out the main jet and cleaned the holes using a strand of fine copper wire from some 18 gauge stranded copper wire. It wasn’t a pleasant job, they tend to stack everything like the heat shield, automatic choke operator, carburetor, and air filter intake shroud (along with gaskets) with 2 long bolts. Trying to juggle that assembly back together was quite annoying. Like Mike, I am an engineer but electrical. We use alcohol only as a cleaning solvent. In addition, I reload my own ammunition and clean my aluminum powder measures with alcohol. After today, I think I will just stick to regular leaded gasoline for all of my outdoor equipment. Fortunately there is a fuel station not too far that specializes in carrying regular leaded gasoline. Living near Lake Erie, a lot of older boats are not really designed for ethanol so there is a market for regular old leaded gasoline here. And FWIW, I have heard using ethanol “summer blend” leaves an overall larger carbon footprint than gasoline alone. By the time you take into account all the energy used in plowing, planting, harvesting, transporting, and distilling alcohol from corn, the overall net carbon emissions are higher than if we used straight gasoline.

Does this mower actually "do all the work" or does it require some help as in pushing it too ?

Asking this because every self propelled mower I've had including the Craftsman I have now requires "help." I want one that I DON"T have to "help."
Asked by: Steve
No pushing on this one.

Recycler 22 in. All-Wheel Drive Personal Pace Variable Speed Gas Self Propelled Mower with Briggs & Stratton Engine is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 1208.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Mower I have mowed my yard with this mower three times. So, it is too early to address dependability. But so far, so good. The feature that most attracted me to this mower was the all wheel drive. I have hills in my front yard, and my real wheel drive mower was just not enough. The all wheel drive on this mower turns this thing into a beast. It has no trouble on hills. And the variable speed is very nice. The variable speed handle is a little tricky to operate, but you can quickly get the hang of it. Can easily operate it with one hand. The engine runs smooth and starts right up. It has an auto prime/choke, that works very well. I have had a very similar Toro in the past and these mowers do a good job of mulching when in that mode. The deck height adjustment is not real smooth. Each wheel independently. But I don't think you are going to find the one lever, all wheel height adjustment on an all wheel drive mower in this price range. So, that's not a big deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NICE IMPROVEMENT OVER MY 7 YR OLD TORO Personal Pace Mower I upgraded to All Wheel Drive model, to replace my 7 yr old personal pace with rear wheel drive, rather than another rear wheel with electric star (that I never used for those 7 years). It is a bit easier climbing up the high slope of my front lawn with all 4 wheels turning for me, and you don't notice the 4WD on level surfaces, and not harder to corner than the old RWD model. There were two pleasant improvements. 1. The engine is SO MUCH EASIER to start. My 65 year old wife, who likes to cut the back yard was so happy with that upgrade. 2. The bagger holds more and it cuts up and stacks the clippings "like cordwood", making it possible to do one whole section of the yard and empty it at the end, where it always took 2-3 empties with the old model, which started laying out a trail when it could not long hold any more grass. I attribute it to the double blade and some engineering improvement of the way the grass gets moved into the bagger. Great decision, and I am glad I did not go to a Honda.

We bought this all wheel drive Toro mower due to the hill on our front lawn. It's not a big lawn by any means, but we thought it would be easier to use. We had only used it 3 or 4 times in early summer before a broken foot meant we had to hire someone to mow our lawn(with their mower). The next year we got the mower out but it did not seem to have the power it had the previous season. I checked to see if wheels were rotating.Only the front wheels were being turned by the motor due to a broken drive belt. I called Toro who said they do not warrant their belts. So we replaced both front and rear drive belts to be safe. This year a new problem, the transmission will not always disengage when you try to start the mower. I am very disappointed in the quality of this Toro mower. For a 2.5 year old mower that has been used less than 25 times. Our last mower we had over 20 years, it still worked when we sold it, This mower is very disappointing and a VERY expensive mistake. It was $599.00

I am a 59 yr old women and live in the foothills where you usually need a weed eater because of the terrain. Since I am 5' 4" tall with a bad back I have a hard time trying to use one. My 20 yr old "Murray" Briggs & Stratton lawn mower finally gave up the ghost last year so I had to hire someone to do all the mowing. ( I did push it to the max since it was a mulching mower, ask my husband). The hired hand used a weed eater and hand pulled those dreaded yellow flower bushes for me. He did a great job but it cost me quite a bit. So this year I bought the "Toro" Briggs & Stratton AWD mower and absolutely love it. I no longer have to push the mower uphill - It goes by itself, all I have to do is follow it . For some reason you have to order it online and have delivered to the Auburn store or home, they only have the RWD & FWD on hand. All I can say is I LOVE IT and hope to get another 20 yrs out of my new Briggs & Stratton engine. By the way I started out researching the Electric mowers and realized that I still needed a gas powered motor for my terrain.

My 20 year old Craftsman mower deck rusted through so it was time for a new mower. Researching I found all wheel drive mowers were now available, and with my steep hills to mow I decided to try one. After looking and reading reviews, some have a open belt under the deck that can become clogged. Toro has a cover over the belt so not a issue. I was unfamiliar with "personal pace" but love that feature. This mower has plenty of power, goes right up my hills, is easy to dump bagger, and starts immediately. The only issue I've had is if I push it without it running to add gas in the driveway, it floods and is hard to start. So I just don't push it while not running. Excellent mower!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mower Got my first personal pace mower with the aluminum deck back in 2003 and it's still running strong. Since I recently moved to a home that is very hilly the old girl was having some slippage issues and was the aluminum deck version so it's a heavier mower. So I decided that I needed a bit lighter and more nimble mower. Did a bit of research and found they now offered an AWD version. Since I've had such good luck with the last personal pace mower it was a no brainer for me to go with another personal pace. The 20353 AWD model has filled that bill perfectly for me, it's lighter than the last one starts on the first pull and cuts great. On my hills it does great with no slippage cutting across my hillsides. If I get the same service from this mower as my older one I shouldn't have to buy another in my lifetime. I recommend this one for hilly lawns and ease of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read the manual! So i bought this mower from HD after it had been returned. I got it for 299 since the previous owner used it to cut his front lawn one time and didn't like the self propelled system. I get it home and read the manual. I take it outside and start mowing and realize I'm having to work a little harder than i should to move this thing. So as the manual said to do, i adjusted the cables to the drive system [EXTREMELY easy] and it worked flawlessly. By far this is the best mower I've ever owned. The awd makes it so you don't have to work no matter what type of terrain you are on and the engine does not bog down. Stop reading reviews and get this one, ignore the poor reviews of easily solved issues by simply calling toro or reading the manual. -Or don't read the manual or call toro before returning it, you'll save the next lucky guy like me alot of money on an awesome mower.
