The electric start is completely charged but nothing happens when I turn on the key

I replaced the fuse that was next to the battery but it did not help.
Asked by: Joan
Check the fuse. There's a video out there on YouTube probably that shows how. Had my mower 2 days and didn't think it could be that but once I took out the old one I saw it was bad. Put the new one in and it starts every time.

Recycler 22 in. Briggs and Stratton Personal Pace Self Propelled Gas Walk-Behind Lawn Mower with Electric Start is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 3798.

The quick start and the self drive functions need improvement. The propel mechanism is experimental at best, doesn't work like it's advertised, and is more taxing on the body than just pushing it by hand, which is difficult because the handle is designed to be used with powered drive, with a bar located underneath for manual push operation. It works OK on a clean flat sidewalk, but any resistance like thicker/thinner grass or a rough spot in the lawn causes it to lurch and stop, lurch and stop. After four mowings on a flat yard I have yet to get used to it. The part of my yard that is inclined slightly makes it worse, so I manually push it up or down small inclines. The electric start works well, always starts the engine, but must be recharged overnight before it will work if the mower sits in the garage for a week or more. It does cut well, with acceptable power. I can't in good faith recommend this mower for just anyone. I'll eventually use just the pull rope to start it and figure a way to work around the propel function hiccups.

Some background: I had a Toro recycler for seven years that I loved! Very reliable and the personal pace feature was a perfect fit for me. With my advancing age I decided to replace it with an electric start model. Tugging on that cord was becoming an issue.Delivery was going to simplify the whole process. Wrong! The first mower they shipped to me failed to arrive. We later learned that the box was damaged and had to be returned to Texas. I live in the Midwest. The second mower has been a disappointment right out of the box. I did everything right-fresh fuel, etc. and it runs rough--very rough! It revs and backs off over and over again-really annoying! So now what do I do? It might be an easy fix, but I don't know a carburetor from a caramel roll. Phone calls and visits to the store, have yielded little help

I had to buy a clamp to put on it to keep it on there. I have mowed with it 7 or 8 times now and the mower has started acting like its stalling. it starts up easy so i know spark is there. i took spark plug out and found there is no continuity. this should not be with the low usage so far. oil level is good, gas is good, i put a new filter on today so once i get new spark plug I will see how it runs. I still need to work on straightening the air housing up more so that the gas part that is designed to go inside the air housing will be in at current its outside of the housing due to be to crooked. I hope I can get it straight. all in all not a bad mower when its running right. but out of the box expect to have to work on it right off the bat. now the rating is based on everything I am having to do to get it to run as it should being that this was new. by right i would had exchanged this item but I do not have the box anymore.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This product's electric start only works one time and that's it. Well, it was great the electric start started first time like it said. But, when I shut it off and came back to restart it would not start with the electric start. I thought maybe since I only charged it for 24 hours that was why. So, I charged It for 48 hours and that did not help either. I purposely, checked a lot of electric start push mowers and Toro seemed to be the best. I have arthritis in my shoulders and the pull cord makes my shoulders hurt . But, I am Grateful that this mower does have a pull start otherwise I couldn't mow my lawn. I told the store where I bought it they said to take it to a repair place. I don't have a way to take it anywhere so, I guess I am stuck with a mower with electric start that I paid extra for. The mower cuts the grass great. It's still under warranty but, I can't take it or send it to be repaired.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad transaxles, also plastic drive gears. This is my 3rd and maybe final toro personal pace. The Briggs motors are great. They could use a foam air prefilter for dust, but good motor. The drive train and drive bearings are what you cannot see, and what you will replace and you will do it soon. I have been seeing 3 years. This latest one, the 20334 electric start, has the usual plastic gears in the drive wheels so the metal drive pinion on the shaft has chewed one up as usual. It did this because the output shafts are leaking on the tranny and it has gone away and has a dry grind noise internally upon inspection. The previous versions had a rachet mechanism on the end of the shaft. I don't mind replacing parts but they make this one hard to disassemble with thin nuts on the outboard bearings that have the bearing flange extending so that it messes that up upon removal. Again toro? Btw On the last one I found they sell metal geared drive wheels under a different part number for europe and mexico, which is where I ordered my last set. No more plastic for me.

By May '19 the battery couldn't hold a charge and the head gasket was blown. The local Toro dealer replaced the head gasket under warrenty but said the battery wasn't covered. The engine has less power than my previous Toro 22"PP mower and drags under load far more easily. I stopped using the mulching set-up and switched to side discharge because the mulch set-up leaves a stripe of debris in the yard. All in all, I would have been better off spending the money to rebuild my 13 year old Toro.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Do not buy this mower if you mulch I have been mowing grass for 30 years and have always used mulch mode. Recently decided it was time to retire my 4 year old $200 mower and upgrade to a Toro. I was quite shocked with my first use of this Toro, while it foes a great job of cutting grass...it leaves a steady line of "clumps of grass clippings" to the right centre of the cut. It's almost as if I need to mow a second time with the bag attached to clean it up. I then started up my Wally mower and cut an adjacent strip of grass...the outcome was perfect! I returned that mower and ordered a same model replacement, same issue! I have been working with Toro for this past month and tried everything they have asked. The outcome from them is nothing but excuses...the grass was wet (NOT)...it was too long (NOT) etc etc. Toro CS has been totally useless. I should post my underdog vs Toro challenge video to youtube! I'm not happy at all with this Toro and I do cut my grass twice weekly. Stop the excuses Toro!

I've gone through several Lawnboys, 3 Hondas, and some other brands I chose to forget. The mulching mode is fantastic, doesn't leave clumps on the lawn like the Hondas did. The walk at your pace feature is amazing. It starts right up every time. I've used it 3 times so far, and have absolutely no complaints on it's performance. Out of all the mowers,, I highly recommend this one, you won't be sorry.

They clearly no longer care about that market as the engines are JUNK. When they break you will not be able to find parts for it to fix them, you are told to buy a new engine or a new mower.... if I spend this much money on a mower I expect to be able to use it for a long time ahead. Don’t get sucked in by the fancier features, mine died after about 12hrs of use. Buy a Honda!

It's great when it is running, however the electric start button stuck down and will not come back up within the very first season of use. I have arthritis and can not pull the cord to start. Rated 2 out of 5 by from Consider other options for the cost.. Bought this at our local Home Depot roughly 5 years ago. Although the first few years it was a bit of a pain to get started (no primer button), it has actually gotten better over time. Pull-cord usually has to be un-attached from handlebar and retracted into the engine for a good pull length to get it started though with a few pulls. I service it every other season since our yard is small. Cuts decent when using the side chute or bag, but the mulching doesn't work great when the grass is even remotely length. The shallow deck makes grass get hung up in the mulching process and stalls out the motor. The Personal Pace feature leaves a lot to be desired as it does not work well on hills or inclines (which is most of our yard). The biggest annoyance is that this mower has pretty much fallen apart. Plastic pieces falling off everywhere, including a really wobbly rear wheel. It was not worth the money paid for it. Home Depot has better, most cost-effective options I believe.

This model 20334 Toro has failed again. It won’t start either electric or rope pull. I bought it 4.8.15 with first use the next day. It worked fine for one year then suddenly stopped working during mowing. Had it repaired, but I lost the record on what parts were replaced and cost. It worked fine until 1.10.18 when it would not start once again. It was not due to external temperatures. Motor or starter acted froze, would not turn over even using the rope pull, but later freed up by itself. I have maintained it, changed the oil and kept the battery charged. It’s stored in the shed out of the weather. Had it repaired again. On 9.25.18, it refused to start again. Replaced spark plug properly gapped, cleaned air cleaner to no avail. I have always used fresh fuel with ethanol inhibitor and Stabil and it has been used here at home, no commercial usage. I likely will trash this mower rather than pay for more repairs and very likely not buy another.

Ran through 3 tanks of fuel and the mower stopped working. Took it back to Home Depot and they would not return it and said it had to be serviced. Claimed they cleaned the carburetor and would not return the machine. The lawn mower would not run through 2 tanks of fuel before the same problem happened. After having to empty the carburetor several more times on my own to get it to run for another tank of fuel, I contacted Toro and was told to take it to another authorized dealer for service and warranty check. I was told that this is not covered on warranty and have gotten the run around from Toro customer service. Not worth the money when yo have to keep paying for service after 3 tanks of fuel. Up to $250 in service bills and am giving up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TWO in 5 years, $400 each, Fool me once... As above, I have owned two of these in the last 5 years. Each runs great out of the box, set-up is quick, loved the way in cut the grass/mulched. Personal Pace was awesome. Problem = BOTH engines seized just over two years of use and just outside the warranty period despite my meticulous and religious maintainance of them. i have a quarter-acre lot. No commercial use, didn't let the grass overgrow. Well, that's a thousand dollars wasted. I REALLY wanted these to work out but fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!! I offer this because the VAST majority or reviews are from people who own the mower for a day, week or maybe a season. Give me a break. I expect it to run right away. But for $400, how about some insight into the long-term performance. I don't want to have to buy a new mower every other year!!!

It was charged but mower cannot be started. Local Home Depot says to bring it in and Toro rep will look at it, or we can return it. Very nice--except I ordered it on line because I am an 84-year old female. My son who does the grass cutting has physical problems. I have to figure out how we get the mower in the car trunk. Meanwhile, my property looks like a jungle. The box it came in is long gone. Having problems finding all the paperwork, BUT my Discover card was charged on May 10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lawn mower I've ever used! I was amazed at how easy it is to use. I was skeptical of the personal pace feature, but was amazed how well it worked. To test it's capabilities I ran a couple rows and never had to actually put enough pressure to actually push the weight of the mower. Walking at a snails pace gave the same results. My only complaint is the big spring loaded door over the top of the bag. When pulling the bag off to empty it, this flap was annoying. I made a small modification to hold the door up out of my way but then the bag occasionally fell off when I hit a bump and got a face full of grass. I also loved the electric start which was also an optional item I didn't think I'd care for. It allowed me to effortlessly let go of the mower to safely empty the bag and also conserve gas. Regardless, I highly recommend this mower to anyone wanting an effortless lawn mowing job!

I put the supplied oil in it, filled the tank with gas, pressed the auto start button and mowed my yard.... LIKE THAT! Two things: (1) I think the oil cap should always be a noticeably different color from the gas. That may be a lame request, but it helps when you are teaching your spouse or your pre-teen how to care for and use the thing. (2) They need a better quick start direction sheet. I'd give it 5 stars but I just bought it... I may be back to upgrade/downgrade once I've used it some. The electric start is amazing!!! Well worth it.

Bought this 2 years ago for an older relative because they always complained about their old mower not having enough power for the wheels to turn so I thought this is self paced and 4 wheel drive and it might be better even though it cost more. I also noticed this didn't have a primer bulb and didn't need an oil change and would start easily without those things...I was skeptical but that's all they had in the store. The mower did start the first two pulls when brand new but the self propelling was really odd. The older relative said they could do it and it wouldn't back out easily and they were right. backing out is a lot harder than a regular mower because of the force of the belts. Also because of having 2 belts, it robs the blades of power so if the grass is a little tall and you're in recycle mode, the mower chokes. As for starting, the next season it took about 30 pulls to get it started and since there is no primer bulb, there was nothing I could do. This season, it took around 50 pulls to get it going.

I get about 3-4 uses out of it before the electric start no longer works. When I bought the original mower I charged it. The light was red and when it turned green I unplugged the charger. After another use the button would not start the mower but the pull cord would. I tried charging it but the light stayed green. I returned it and after a few uses with the new mower it no longer will start with the push button. But the pull cord will work. Do not spend the extra money for the push button start if it is going to break after a few uses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Personal Pace 22 inch Briggs & Stratton Gas Mower I purchased this mower specifically because it had an electric start. On initial startup the electric start worked perfectly. The second time I tried (even after charging) it would not start at all. I changed the fuse, it clicked over a couple of times, but still wouldn’t start. However, it worked fine with the cord. Apart from the electric start issue, it was very easy to assemble, and once I got it going, mowing was effortless. I do recommend this product, because of the strong engine, and effortlessness it takes to mow, but very disappointed with the electric start.

Unit has spent more time at the repair shop than mowing lawn. Used it for maybe 6 mowings and so far it has gone through three sessions for repair including one carburetor and one tuneup and, in addition, a choke repair. Luckily I do have another mower because this one now WILL NOT START AGAIN! forth time in 2 years. Not a good sign for Toro and/or Briggs and Stratton. I will be checking with Home Depot as to my options for getting rid of the lemon. Perhaps Toro or Briggs can offer some help???

I had to return to the Home DCepot/Saugus, MA store where they provided the missing bolt. Then I looked for instructions to mount the rear deflector, which was in the box as an as-yet-unassembled part.. Finding none, I realized that it was supposed to have been already attached to the machine, and I could not see any way to mount it. I was not about to disassemble the machine to try to mount it myself. I returned the machine to Home Depot for another machine, which was given to me, so now I'm back to Go.

My father has the identical mower and I thought it was only a problem with his. Both of our mowers are awful over the smallest of bumps. The mower can tackle tall wet grass with no problem, but the second it hits a bump it wants to die. VERY frustrating when it's 90 degrees outside and your holding the mower with a death grip to keep it from stumbling. I've never had this big of a problem with any other mower (craftsman, Honda, etc). I should have returned it after the first use.

I have had this mower for approximately two years and tomorrow it goes to the repair shop for the third time for the same problem. The electric start is not charging, AGAIN! I purchased the maintenance plan, which is something I never do, and I have had to call the service center three times. I am very frustrated and totally unsatisfied. The mower itself works very good, but when you pay extra for electric start you expect to be able to just push a button, not pull the rope. I think this is my last Toro and my last Home Depot lawn mower purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Toro Model 20334 I have used several Toro self-propelled mowers since the 1960s and find Toro to be of high quality and 99% dependability. The personal pace feature is great. I can no longer start a mower using a pull-cord, so I really appreciate the push-button electric start. After each use, I connect the power cord to charge the starter battery until I'm ready to use it a week later. Has worked first time every time except once when I shut off mower to add gas. Wouldn't start. Although the charger had been connected for a week, I had to connect it again for about 20 minutes. Then it started fine. The Toro mower I ordered from HomeDepot arrived in the time frame promised. Stores are well organized. I can usually find what I need on my own. Most associates are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to offer assistance. Returns are no problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is the best I've seen in 77 years. I am very impressed with this Toro Lawn Mower. It preforms in a top notch way and does an outstanding job on cutting the lawn. I have used it approx 6 times and it starts on the first time every time. All you have to do is charge it up prior to using and you will have no problems. I really like the cleaning part, for all you do attach a hose to the cleaning port and start it up. It will wash all the grass away and clean the under carriage very nicely. I must say that I have no complaints at this time and very pleased with my Toro Lawn Mower.

Have over half acre to mow, with slight inclines and some rough terrain. Self propel makes it effortless. Push start is GREAT and reliable! Mower doesn't just mow the lawn, it looks professionally groomed! The blades are sharp and cut even! Love this mower! Previously had a 2 yr. Craftsman mower with a pull cable that broke after 1 year, and constant other things breaking/malfunctioning! We are now TORO fans! Do not hesitate to buy this lawn mower!
