Can this mower be used exclusively for mulching? Do I need to buy mulching plug/blades? Is there any specialized mulching blade that I can use to improve performance like dual blade set? Also, does anyone have any review of mulching performance?

Asked by: oxblood
It is rear wheel drive and the front wheels are the power reverse feature, when you pull up on the drive control to go backwards the rear wheels stop driving and the front wheels drive in reverse.

Recycler 22 in. SmartStow Briggs and Stratton PoweReverse Personal Pace Gas Walk Behind Mower is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Toro just keeps getting better Over 27 years I just purchased my fourth Toro lawn mower and each one is better than its predecessors. I mow about 1/3 acre with a 30 degree slope from late March until the end of November. My prior Toro model lasted 6 mowing seasons until it developed some problems that eluded normal fuel/air/spark maintenance. After viewing some truly frightening YouTube videos, I decided that the cost of a pro's assessment (before any parts/repairs) probably exceeded its value. The only downside was that mower shopping in September does not present a lot of buying choices at most of the big box stores. The mower was assembled and out-of-box and the only thing missing was the owner's manual which I quickly/easily downloaded and printed from the Toro site. The mower started right up on the first/second pull (as all of my prior Toro mowers did) and is easy to use. It doesn't have the blade brake like my prior mower but the PoweReverse and SmartStow more than compensates for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference a new mower can make! I had my old Toro for seven years and it still worked great for my needs. But, once I seen this mower and how it could be stored in the garage using a lot less foot print and that it had a power reverse capability--I decided to get this model due to my yard being on a small incline. This mower was amazing, the power forward and reverse is so easy to work and engage just by changing my direction--as I pull back, the mower goes into reverse smoothly and changes direction (forward) just by moving my hands forward. The cut is clean and smooth as well. After use, when stored, nothing leaks. So far, It was clearly worth changing mowers even though nothing was wrong with my old one. Great design and so easy to clean using two options based on the design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice new clever features The only negative is that the mower sometimes leaves a little clump of mulched grass when you stop for your turns, but I quickly mow over them and they disappear. The easy vertical storage is nice and really does save space. For power assist in reverse, you must get used to slightly lifting the handle as you back up. This enables the reverse-turning front wheels to engage with the ground and propels the mower backwards. The natural tendency is to press down, so this requires a little practice, but it really works. Engine is designed to not need an oil change. A shifting knob enables you to easily switch between mulching and bagging. A day of reading mower reviews suggests spot checking that all four wheels are well-fastened before using any new mower (these were all fine). This replaces my previous Toro that lasted 11 years. I decided to give the 20355 a try based on the reverse-assist and vertical storage. I had an electric start before but the pull start on this one is really easy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer beware After buying this and during the 1st mowing, the rear left wheel fell off. Right then I figured, just tighten the bolt. Did so. huh uh. The wheel kept falling off. This is just bad quality to begin with. Beyond that, I noticed after 2 weeks that the entire rear axle was rusting. ? Really ? As though having it rust wouldn't matter or no one would ever notice. phewwww.....I painted it with rustolium to prevent further rusting. I'm also not happy with the sputtering of the motor when you go on some rough terrain or bump something like a tree. At the end of the summer, the wheel came off again and I decided to take a closer look by removing the wheel completely and see what was going on. Turns out that the threaded hole on the pivot arm plate where the axle bolt tightens in is completely stripped. Now I'm having to order the plate and a new bolt. A busy person that doesn't want to make lawn mowers his/her hobby doesn't need this problem mower at all!.

I have had other personal pace mowers by Toro but in my opinion this mower cuts the best of all of them. Only reason for not giving it a 5 star is when bagging and its full and try to reverse it front wheels want to come off the ground. I mostly use it for mulching and don't pick up clippings so this isn't to much of an issue. The only other issue is that im only 5'-6" tall so the handle is or was to high so I removed the rubber bumpers where the handle lays on and it lowered the handle by a couple inches and now all is fine. I hope this helps

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I've cut the grass only once and was so easy with the self propelled and power reverse feature. ... I've cut the grass only once and was so easy with the self propelled and power reverse feature. It satisfied my need perfectly for a way to easily stow it out of the way when not in use. This was the primary reason I bought it since we have a very small garage. I only give it a 3 instead of 5 because I don't believe the pre-assembly of the mower was done with respect to quality. I believe that one of the wheels was not properly screwed in to the frame of the mower. It nearly fell off but didn't during that 1st mowing. I just tightened it up a bit but only to learn later that the bolt had not been installed properly the 1st time as it was crooked making the tire look bent out. I had to completely take it off and re install the bolt correctly. I believe the initial problem is Toro's fault for not doing a quality assembly. So out of the box beware of how well it's been put together.

I do not know what the Toro design engineers were thinking to have this steep ramp into the bag from the cutting area. The flow from cut debris is impeded. It all bunches just behind these ramp.

Reverse feature does not work well as the front wheels are the drive for reverse. Going in a backward motion the wheels tend to lift off the surface and there is insufficient traction. For the price it should have had the electric start.
