It is hard to push without the self propel. It’s possible but you will struggle.

How well does this mower work on St. Augustine grass? I've heard that it has some difficulty on thicker grass
Asked by: Jeff
Overall, this mower does great mowing/mulching thick St. Augustine. However, I mow on the second highest setting every 7-10 days. If cutting shorter or after longer period you do have to slow down a bit.

Had for about 2-3 weeks, about to do the 5 hour oil change. Easy to pull, moves quickly, little heavier than standard mower but its larger so.... should be expected. Takes a little getting used to a wider cut, but it saves a ton of time mowing. Overall very pleased. Only critique was really on shipping, they bent the right side below the discharge in a bit (photos).... so on my first start the blade hit the side of the metal pretty good and took most the paint off. The mower stopped instantly. Once figured out what happened I just bent it out. Seems fine now though.

I want to start out by saying this review is for the mower, NOT HOME DEPOT. They have been super. Purchased first mower 10 April 2018. Exchanged a week later after about 4 hours of use...blade control spring snapped. Returned second one after about 4 hours use...same thing. Same exact thing. Detecting a pattern? When contacting Toro for their assistance, they recommend I take it to a service repair center. Well gee, what a SUPER helpful answer. I need the BRAND NEW mower to work, not sitting in a black hole where warranty work is put last...the grass is not going to stop growing for 4-6 weeks while Dan the repairman decides to get to it. If there are any repairmen named Dan out there...please don't be insulted. I can put a spring on....its not that difficult. So the Toro logic is lose the mower sale and a customer over a 10 dollar spring that should last longer than 4 hours. I assure you its going back to join the other two mowers I have retuned...and get my money back. I loved it when I first used it...but like some loves, soured quickly. I would try something else.

I have had a Toro 22" Recycler Pacer for 12 years now and while the engine on it still runs great, one of the drive wheel's gear on the axle broke so I have to push it harder. It gave me 12 years of reliable usage and great cuts and I figured it was time to upgrade to a new one. I have always seen and wanted the wider 30" Timemaster but didnt want to spend the money. Rather than spend $70 to fix my old mower I decided to pull the trigger this year and buy the Timemaster. I got it on sale during the Toro Days at Home Depot and saved $100 which made the purchase sweeter. But the moment I pulled the string on the mower to start it, I never looked back! The new Timemaster starts right up and sounds like a purring cat while idling or pushing without the blade engaged. And once you engage the blade, the kitty becomes a tame tiger that cuts the grass with so much finesse. I love this ability to move the mower around with the pace push without the blade engaged. And the mower is SO easy to maneuver around trees and turns despite my initial concern for it being larger than my old mower. It seem larger on the exterior but still handles like a Porsche 911. Easy to control and does not feel like a big mower at all. While it does sip more gas than my old mower, it cuts more grass in less time and the cut is SO CLEAN it looks like I hired a professional service to do my lawn. No missed blades of grass and all clippings make it into the bag. Speaking of bag, the bag is much bigger than my old Toro and that means I can cut more and stop less. And when I do stop to empty it, I no longer have to turn off the mower to do so. I just leave it at idle without the blade engaged and flip the rear lid up and easily remove the bag. I think of it as a quick pitstop on a race track where the crew has new tires ready to bolt on in seconds. For me I empty the bag and reattach in seconds as well and am back on the grass track in no time! LOVE IT, LOVE IT LOVE IT! My lawn loves it too! The new mower cut to the old mower cut is like my lawn going to a hair salon instead of a street barber. The only flaw in the mower is the sponge foam in the gas tank. While I understand the great design purpose of it to prevent gas agitation, it doesn't allow me to see how much gas is in there. And when I fill it, if im not paying close attention and filling it slow, it can easily overflow. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say about this mower. The design and features are so well thought out. Including the water cleanout connector and the ability to place the push handle into the upright or forward fold position with one click for easy storage in my shed. This is my second Toro mower since being a homeowner and third Toro product (including snowblower). Growing up my family always had Toros and now I know why. They just work!

Bought this lawnmower in July 2016 and ran fine all the way up until November 2017 the last cut of the season, less than 50 total uses. When I went to start it up in the spring of 2018 it would not start. Tried all regular diagnostics and could not get it to start. Took it back to Home Depot to be looked at and they told me it had dirt inside the engine being sucked in through the air filter. A quality product does not tear up a cylinder and cause the motor to not run in that short period of time. I contacted Briggs and Stratton and they said their warranty doesn't cover it, of course. Completely dissatisfied and will go back to John Deere or Honda. Don't spend $1000 to save some time, it's not worth the headache

I bought the Toro name brand on the recommendation of several neighbors that are long tome owners of Toro lawn equipment. Although the mower is a timesaver due to the 30" wider cut area I am hugely disappointed in the reliability of the mower. Two days out of the two year engine warranty, it blew a head gasket (Toro now installs a larger engine on the machine). I've also had to replace the tensioner pulleys for the blades and four days ago the blade control cable broke. The local Toro service center dealer has just looked at me with his mouth open when I asked him for the repair parts. I expected more from a mower that cost nearly $1,000, I've owned Sears machines that have lasted 15 years.
