Can you push the mower without using the self propel? i.e. does it “free wheel” or would you be fighting the self propel mechanism?
Asked by: Moto233racer
Too many wrong or incomplete answers...Short answer; Fighting the SP system doesn't occur with Toro's PP system; it disengages automatically when you stop; it slows when you slow and it goes when you go at your pace. Long answer; If you ensure that you don't push in on the primary push bar (the upper push bar), and instead push only the secondary push bar (the one that's lower and part of the main handle); then it will free wheel forward. It has high quality wheels and so rolls easily, but it weighs 135 pounds or so without the bag, so it's heavy but not too bad to push as long as it's not uphill or in rough terrain. It will additionally free wheel in reverse holding the primary handle back as in when you're stopped or not moving forward, so it's always free wheeling when you're pulling the mower backward unless you were pushing with one hand on the primary handle and pulling with the other on the secondary handle. But free wheeling forward with the blades turning would be very tough, because the bale to engage the blades is meant to hold against the primary handle, and so you'd have to hold it against the handle with one hand and push the other bar with the other hand. Very hard to explain Toro's PP system without trying it out; but if you're thinking that you'd need to somehow disengage the SP system to mow in any situation, that doesn't apply with Toro's system. It disengages Personal Pace automatically when you stop. If you did need to free wheel with the engine shut off such as a situation where you're out of gas, then you must push only the lower handle; but to free wheel in any other situation is usually not preferred by any user.

Is a residential mower. BUT i have used it as commercial since July of 2016 (20199 / 316000001 - 316999999). I had my own repairs with this mower one of the biggest repairs that could of cost me so much money was the head gasket. It blew up man lol it was one loud bang, I duck down. Lucky non internal damage, replaced the head gasket (torque 20- 25 ftlb). Then just regular maintenance, belts, engine brake cable, front wheel plate, air filter, carburetor clean up, pulley kit replaced about 3 times my fault to much tension on the belt, gas cap replaced once- still leaks gas-needs gas tank replaced for tight closure, fuel filter and blades about 3 times. She can take tall grass up to 14 inch. Tall grass make sure you have sharp blades, chute or bagging and high setting. Walk normal don't rush otherwise you are forcing the engine to overheat just let her do the job. As 2018 I can feel the wear of the engine, slightly takes tall grass now. I am currently working with this mower until it last. Has and still does, saves me time on each house I go. What I like about this mower is the yard appeal. Do I recommend for commercial? No. Unless, you know how to work on a engine than go for it but be aware will wear off in 2 years depending how much you abuse it.

Things to consider...One thousand bucks is a lot of money for a walk behind that's built for home owner duty. Most TimeMaster30s' sold are actually used by professionals who are trying to go on the cheap. Reviews on YouTube from mostly pros are about 50/50. Biggest complaints are that the pulleys give out quickly used 10s of hours per week and transmissions can go after a couple of years; but keep in mind a couple years of use by a pro is like 8-10 years for a homeowner with a 1/2-1 acre lawn as recommended for this mower by Toro. The other 50 percent love it even for commercial use. Personal Pace proves very durable; as are the wheels, handle, deck, etc. The pulleys and belts aren't all that expensive, and my first pulley went out in season 4; and was easy to get and replace myself. All mowers with belts and pulleys must be replaced eventually. There are also Toro dealers pretty much everywhere. My local dealer is great; there are no MTD dealers as such. Everyone pretty much loves Toro's PP system. MTD makes the 28" Craftsman 93790 mower. It can be found for as little as $750 but with no bag but with a striping kit. My Stride is their copy-cat self pace system. Doesn't look as good to me as PP, because it requires more of a downward pushing action. Add the bag, and it's around $950 but you've got a striping kit included. They have the same engine. The front wheels don't sit as close to the deck, so it's not quite as compact. No commercial users are buying it, so there are very few reviews on YouTube. No pro buyers tells me something about what they think versus Toro brand. Videos I've seen make me think it's top speed is much slower; and it doesn't take off as smoothly when engaging the self pace system. I hate the bag set up versus Toro. I like the single adjustment lever of the MTD made mower. Store site reviews are in the 3 1/2 to 4 star range. TimeMaster is in the 4 to 4 1/2 range. There is also two other brands; also MTD: Troybilt WC28 that includes the bagger but no striping kit for $899 or a Cub Cadet, which has swivel wheels and electric start for the same price as a TimeMaster 30 without electric start. The other two brands come with the bag, but they're set up the same as the Craftsman except that the Cub Cadet CC600 doesn't have the single lever height adjustment due to the fact that it has the caster wheels. The CC600 doesn't get the new B&S 223 cc engine; at least not yet. A Chinese knockoff 195 cc. I too would like to see them compared side-by-side, but nothing on the web exists that I can find. One buyer said that he looked at the TimeMaster, but chose the Craftsman, because he thought it'd be better, but he did not elaborate; he does like his Craftsman. Personally, I can't see anything about it that could be better except less grass caught up under the deck when mulching, but even that isn't confirmed; and of course, the price. There could be some things just as good. If you don't have an HD credit card, you can get one and get 10% off this purchase; $910 seems much better than $1,000 for a walk behind. That's what I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This mower is a beast The Toro Personal Pace TimeMaster is a perfect mix of a traditional 21" push mower and a full size walk behind. It has the maneuverability of a push mower but it's 2 blades and 30" cutting width handles a large lawn with ease. I used it in late fall over a layer of leaves and it mulched them to almost a dust. The cut is perfect. I rated DEPENDABILITY 4 stars only because I have not had it long enough to truly judge dependability.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality My lawnmower was overfilled with oil and smoked them stopped working - assumed it was probably carburetor problem - just advised connecting rod is broken and repair man says its a 'right off'!!! On a residential mower with little use - ridiculous!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TimeWaster Cheap plastic bracket for blade engagement has broken twice. This mower was poorly engineered...period. Apologies aren't enough Toro. It takes years to earn a dedicated customer; and just seconds to lose one. Since this mower has been out for several years; You've had opportunity to identify and correct this (and other painful issue's); but have not.

Now after 2 years with this mower here's what i've experienced. It's a gas hog. Not so bad as its powerful BUT the gas tank is poorly designed so it runs out of gas with lots of visible gas sloshing in the bottom of the tank. The intake is so high that I have to fill the tank 2x each mow for my .5 acre lot. The bolts that hold the cover over the pull rope vibrated themselves out and got lost. I had to go to the hardware store to find lock nuts. The engine bolts also got loose creating a knocking sound fixed by re-tigntening them. Worst of all. The gas cap doesn't seal. I have to put a baggie over my hand as the cap is soaked with gas that somehow gets out of the tank during a mow. I took it in for a warranty repair and ITS BEEN IN THE SHOP 20 DAYS. I still don't have my mower back as the tank is on some sort of back order. So while its great to have a 30" cut in a push mower this thing is not the quality you'd expect for $1000.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant mower All I can say is it's a brilliant mower. I'm a mowing contractor in Australia. Three years old, mow on average 6 lawns a day so 30 a week, 1500 mows a year. Replace drive belts every six months, blades when required. Doesn't quite like long grass but once you get the knack of slow and steady it picks up wet and long grass pretty good. Engine showing wear and tear now but at almost 5000 mows it's expected. Blows a bit of oil and only just now replacing the coil. Only down side is the switch to stop the mower is on the outside of the handle and breaks off going under low trees and branches catch on it. Need to move the switch into the centre of the handle. Love that the handle folds up and easy to get in and out of my trailer.

I actually bought this mower in April of 2017 but since then I hate how toro created an heavy duty mower with weak plastic parts! When this mower is fully functional it is amazing and I use it commercially. I used it daily and it is the hummer of lawn mowers lol (gas guzzler). I keep a 5 gallon gas can while I'm working anyway so no biggie. My problems experienced Pros vs Cons: Cons - V-Belt gets worn down very quickly - Drive belt tends to slips at times (tends to last longer than V-Belt) - Drinks gas like crazy - Serpentine belt is like $70 - Tires to small for the weight of this mower (bigger tires will increase maneuverability) - So powerful that the bag fills up so quick (if you are bagging the grass) - Bag can be stronger Pros - Tall grass is no match for this mower (You must bag as you cut) - Unbelievable power for the price - Race car self propelled speed (I'm 5'4" lol) - Can be used as a powered dolly (to move lawn trash bags) - Small to medium branches are nothing to run over - Big yards especially corner lot homes take really no time at all I could list more and more because I use this mower commercially but overall it handles business so if you know you have a pretty big property this is the mower for you. You will never feel like you did much while using it unless you are a just a lazy person period! Buy it and see for your self! Photos are of how this mower gets it down!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ability to keep running to pick up branches and move items, time saver Overall, I really like the 30" Timemaster Mower, however a spring broke which engages the blades, within the first five uses. Hopefully this is just a one time deal. The size of the gas tank is way too small for the intended use of a 30" cut mower. Please think about a retro fit to increase gas tank size.
