Can this be used for hot tubs?

As long as the hot tub is 110 volt I don't see why not. I definitely would not run a hot tub without GFCI protection.

Does this GFI provide surge protection?

The simple answer is no. GFCI means Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. In simplistic terms, it monitors the "amount" of electricity that leaves one of the "blades" of the socket and compares it with what comes back on the other "blade". If they aren't equal, then the electricity must be going somewhere it shouldn't be going and that "somewhere" might be through the person operating the electrical device that is plugged into the GFCI socket. This could mean electricity is going through YOU to ground, and that is dangerous or could be fatal. If this "fault" is detected, then the circuit is shut off and the electricity no longer leaves this adapter. A surge is an additional amount of electricity going where it might normally go. You could have a surge and a ground fault at the same time, if so then this device should protect you because of the ground fault. It is NOT designed to protect against electrical surges.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertized This product works well. I bought it for my Aquarium so I wouldn't kill myself with all the electricity and water close together. The only issue I have is when the power is disconnected, either by turning everything off or a power outage the unit has to be manually reset. This could be an issue for me, if their is a power blip the system will stay off until until I can reset the unit.

It turns out to be rather hard shell, and heavier than I had anticipated; if I shake it, it does not feel like anything inside is loose. I would imagine it would take a number of drops before any concern for the functionality. The device gets warm, even after light use, but I expected that due to the way it is enclosed.

This is a great & easy way to protect myself while using these outlets when I am using an electric hedge trimmer or other corded device outside. Try to find a device like this in a retail store (including Home Depot) & the employees will tell you that such a thing doesn't exist! I've been searching for an item like this for years. The price & convenience are wonderful -You don't have to redo all your outlets - you just plug this baby into the outlet you are using and you are ready to go with no worries. I wonder why this item is not more readily available.
