Questions & Answers

Can I cold smoke
ByFeb 5, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Chris, great question. Based on our official guidance, the Pro Series 22 can produce plenty of smoke using the Smoke setting, which runs at a lower temperature range (160–180°F) to maximize smoke flavor, but it is not designed for true cold smoking. Because the grill uses a live fire to generate smoke, it will always create some heat. For customers looking to cold smoke at much lower temperatures, Traeger recommends using an external cold smoke. If you’d like help choosing an option that works well with your setup, feel free to contact us at 1-800-TRAEGER and we’ll be happy to help.

Says on your site 500 degrees and 5 minutes a side for steak but it doesn’t look cooked
          ByJan 4, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Hey Jon, thanks for commenting. The 500 degree and five minutes per side guidance is a general starting point and results can vary depending on steak thickness, starting temperature of the meat, and how much time the grill had to fully preheat. Thicker cuts or steaks coming straight from the fridge usually need a bit more time or a finish step to reach the desired doneness. We recommend preheating the grill until it is fully stabilized at temperature, placing the steak on once that heat is consistent, and using internal temperature as the final guide rather than time alone. For best results, many cooks also sear at high heat and then let the steak continue cooking until it reaches the target internal temperature. If you want help dialing this in for your specific cut and setup, our support team is happy to walk through it with you. You can reach us at +1 800 TRAEGER. TRAEGER

Can I grill without using smoke ?
            ByJan 1, 2026
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hello there, yes, you can grill on the Traeger Pro Series 22 without producing a lot of smoke. While the grill uses wood pellets and will always burn them as fuel, the amount of visible smoke depends on temperature settings. At higher cooking temperatures, the pellets burn more cleanly and produce much less visible smoke than at lower “smoke” settings. Higher temps on their grills (up to about 450°F) produce less smoke flavor and less visible smoke compared to low-temperature smoke ranges (160–225°F), meaning you can grill with minimal smoke if you cook at higher temperatures. If you have more questions, please contact us at 1-800-TRAEGER.

Can you sear on this grill and how
              ByJan 1, 2026
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Good day, yes. The Traeger Pro Series 22 can sear, but only using indirect heat. It does not have open-flame searing. To sear: Set the grill to its maximum temperature (about 450°F). Once fully preheated, place the meat directly on the grates to finish the cook. Searing on this model relies on high ambient heat, not direct flame, so the result will be a moderate sear rather than a traditional gas or charcoal sear.

Very happy with the grill. It was a Christmas gift and my husband absolutely loves it. Only giving 4 stars because I thought I would be getting a brand new grill out the box, but Home Depot delivered the floor model. I wish they would have asked first. It was going to be more of a hassle to return it, so we just kept it.

                  Traeger Disaster
We have owned a Traeger for less than a year and were very pleased with it. I have read about the need to vacuum out pellets from the pellet burner/auger to prevent fires and did so before every cook. Unfortunately on Thanksgiving, in the middle of our smoke, we noticed the paint pealing off in the bottom of the Traeger and saw that the pellets were somehow getting outside of the burner ruining our Thanksgiving meal. I contacted customer support and they were not helpful in any way. I was a Traeger fanboy but now I will be going out of my way to dissuade people from buying one.

Hi Bondarnik, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with your Pro Series 22 Pellet Grill. We understand how important it is for your grill to perform reliably, especially during a holiday cook, and we appreciate you letting us know what happened during your Thanksgiving meal.
What you described with paint lifting in the lower area of the grill can take place after a high heat event inside the cook chamber. When temperatures rise beyond normal operation, the paint can begin to flake or peel. This can happen when pellets build up in the firepot area or when fuel collects outside the burn pot during a cook. Although paint changes are not covered under warranty, we want to make sure the grill itself is functioning the way it should.
To help prevent this from happening again, we recommend removing any ash or loose pellets from the firepot and surrounding area before each cook. This keeps heat focused where it belongs and supports even and consistent performance. If pellets are gathering outside the firepot, our team can take a closer look at the auger system and ensure everything is aligned correctly.
If you would like help moving forward, please contact us at 1 800 TRAEGER so we can review what your grill is showing and continue supporting you directly.

This is not what you think.
After 1.5 months this stopped working out of the blue, switch stop responding, called support, on the phone and on chat, and oh my! The were real people, but were fixated on going thru a list of troubleshooting, like are you sure is connected to power? Of course I am I’m looking at it! But does it have power? …..and they kept going on and on and on with the same questions. I told them several times that the switch had NO continuity, but they kept ignoring it, and asking for videos, which I did send, well, this went on for 1hr and 45 min, to which I just decided to return it to home depot and let them dump it. Definitely this people need to get someone knowledgeable in tech support, specially when they are dealing with clients tha know how electricity works. So the next step is go to YouTube and do a full review of this thing (the grill and the company), this has taken too much time of my life. Buy something else, this was way too expensive for them to not back up.

Hi Peter, thank you for sharing your experience with your Pro Series 34. We understand that the process you went through with our support team was frustrating, and we agree that the difficulties you encountered are not typical. Our team follows a step-by-step process to confirm the exact cause and ensure the correct solution or parts are provided. We know this can feel repetitive, especially when you’ve already verified components yourself, but it helps us provide accurate resolutions.
If you’d like, our support team can review your case further and make sure everything is addressed properly. You can reach us at +1 800 TRAEGER.

Pretty good at first, then not worth the scrap
I bought this grill a few years ago and for the first year or so it was pretty good, had issues but they were addressed at least product wise food was ruined when pins broke and fans went out. But now around year 3 it’s constant maintenance, cleaning, tearing apart and rebuilding in the middle of trying to cook. If everything isn’t perfect the grill shuts down, I’m currently trying to cook for family and watching temp go from ~310-470 rapidly and then grill shuts off with a warning on panel. Honestly go with a normal smoker or old school and cook over a fire, it’s more work each time but the lack of issues and breakdowns and ruined food is worth the effort each time. Buddys Pit Boss hasn’t had all these issues and he bought a couple years before me.

Response from Traeger GrillsNov 8, 2025
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear the grill served you well in the beginning, but we’re truly sorry that the last couple of years haven’t been the same. Frequently needing to maintain or workarounds (especially in the middle of a cook) is far from the experience we want for our customers.

Rapid temperature swings and unexpected shutdowns typically point to airflow or component issues, and we’d like to take a closer look to help get your grill operating consistently again. If you can reach out to us with your grill’s model and serial number, we’ll walk through diagnostics and explore the best resolution, whether that’s replacement parts or additional support.

Your time, your food, and your family gatherings matter. We appreciate your feedback, and we’d really like the chance to turn this around for you. Please contact us at 1-800-TRAEGER for personalized assistance. TraegerService

If you enjoy wasting a nice amount of money, being fooled by marketing & donating to a landfill; then Traeger is your grill. Well, for a few months anyway. Rusting, clogging and in more need of attention than a metropolitan area, this product will remind you that internet reviews are the province of bots & influencers.

Hello Reggie, Thanks for the detailed review. Rusting and clogging after a few months isn’t what we expect. Pellet grills do need periodic ash and grease cleanouts and truly dry pellets, when airflow is restricted or pellets swell from moisture, clogs and performance issues can show up fast.

On rust, outdoor moisture and salt (especially in humid or coastal areas) can cause surface rust over time. Keeping the grill covered, wiping it down after wet weather, re‑seasoning grates, and touching up exposed metal helps. This guide shows what’s normal and what isn’t, plus care tips: https://support.traeger.com/hc/en-us/articles/30316336073243-Rust-on-Traeger-Grills. If you’re seeing rust this quickly despite regular care, it’s worth a look from our side. Our team can help at 1‑800‑TRAEGER. TraegerService
                          Horrible smoker
I bought this grill back in may and had only been able to use it about 3 times. During a cook it, the augur suddenly stopped getting power so I contacted support and they tried guiding to fix it, doesn’t work and they send me a replacement augur motor, I install the augur motor and same instance, stopped working after exactly a minute and 10 seconds, I contact support again and this time they think is my controller board, they send me a new one, I install and STILL THE SAME THING, it just dies so AGAIN I contact support and they just end up sending me a whole new hopper assembly with a new induction fan, augur motor and controller, I finally have hope that simply replacing literally every important part of the grill it’ll finally work, I test it and it’s still the same story. I’m honestly so disappointed, this is supposed to be a reputable brand for its price tag and for it being American made. This is the absolute worst smoker experience I’ve ever had and will never be buying a traeger after this. It has been nothing but headaches for 4 MONTHS STRAIGHT. I don’t know how this has 4.4 stars when it should be 0. They trick you into thinking you have a good quality smoker then just scam you of your money. Please anyone I beg you to just ignore whatever positive reviews on that are on here and save yourself from future headaches and disappointment and go with literally any other brand.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with your Pro Series 34. We’re truly sorry to hear that, despite multiple replacement parts and support steps, you’re still not seeing the performance you expected. That’s understandably frustrating, especially after several months of trying to get back to grilling.

While it’s normal for the auger to cycle on and off as it feeds pellets into the firepot, especially on both WiFIRE and non-WiFIRE grills, it sounds like something else may be affecting your grill’s performance. We want to get this right for you.

Please reach out to our team at 1-800-TRAEGER so we can take a closer look at what’s going on and help make this right.

We appreciate your patience and your feedback.
