Questions & Answers

Should Allure Ultra be applied directly over cement floor which has some staining & glue residue or should some sort of vapor barrier be put down?

Cement floor has been scraped and leveled
Asked by: bob
I tried to install this flooring as it was "easiest floor ever" according to box and videos. After following all directions, it took me 11 hours to install flooring on a 4X6 ft cement bathroom floor. I did use the plastic vapor barrier (not difficult), had the toilet pulled and went to work. First problem was I could not cut it to get around edges of things like the toilet hole or doorways. Forget the "score and snap" with a razor knife. This product is thick! It will last the apocalypse but I could not cut it with a razor knife or snips. I called the company and they said I needed a chop saw or a skill saw to cut it! I tried laying the floor and since you have to lock-in end-to-end and then side-to-side, the edges kept popping our when I went to click them in the opposite direction. After getting 3 rows down, the first 2 rows separated from each other and I had to start again. After 5 hours, I called the company again and asked for help. They decided my room temperature was too cold (55 deg, suggested 75-80 deg) so I cranked up the heat and left the product to warm up overnight). The next day a friend came over and we rewatched the video 5 more times and decided maybe I had started the project with the wrong edge of the plank headed to the left so we reversed everything and started again. Same problem for 6 hours the second day--> struggle to click-in the planks and then they separated as we moved to the next rows. It became clear there was one small "bump" in the middle of the bathroom floor that was a bit higher and probably lead to failure of the entire system. Overall, I would not use this product again. It may work for new construction with completely level surface but otherwise forget it. It is difficult to work with despite all the videos showing great ease. Cutting it is impossible without professional tools. I would suggest a different product or having it professionally installed unless you have tons of time to waste and enjoy frustration!

How is this stuff cut?

I scored twice and got nowhere. My husband scored several more times and finally broke through after he slammed it onto the wall corner. I can't imagine doing 312 square feet like this! The knife blades were new.
Asked by: wonderwoman
Buy a scoring tool (found in the ceramic tile tools area). Score by using a small square and a 4' level and it snaps right off.

Installing under a toilet and cabinets

We were considering Pergo but decided on this product because it is 100% waterproof. Our research on floating floors is to "not" install them under islands and cabinets but yet under a stove and refrigerator is fine. I read that some people have installed this product under cabinets but what about toilets? I cannot find anything in the instructions as to what the manufacturer recommends. Thoughts?
Asked by: KenR
I removed the toilet, installed the flooring and reinstalled the toilet. It is not hard to do and you will have a much nicer, more professional looking job, and not have to be concerned about perfectly trimming the planks to meet the toilet base. Just be sure to buy a new wax ring and maybe longer toilet hold down bolts, which are not expensive at all.

Allure Ultra 7.5 in. x 47.6 in. Vintage Oak Natural Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring (19.8 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 1002.

I purchased about 800 sq ft of this product last September to update my basement floor. At that time, the floor was 3/4 ceramic tile and 1/4 old vinyl tile. I chose this product because I loved the color and the fact that it is water resistant. My basement tends to get a little bit of water every couple of years and I didn't want something that I would need to replaced. I was impressed with the quality of the flooring. It is extremely heavy and has a nice scratched surface to give it some character. Before installing, I did do a little bit of prep work. The ceramic and vinyl areas of the floor were set at slightly different levels, so I used some feathering concrete to bridge the gap and transition from one level to the other. I did this to avoid using a transition strip. Before installation, I inserted some spacers against the wall and made sure that the first row would be level. The directions are pretty straight forwards, so following those, I began to lay the vinyl planks into place. Even though the planks are thick, they were not overly difficult to cross cut with a utility knife. Just make sure that you have extra blades handy because they will need changed every so often. Corner (rip) cuts were a little more tricky, so I ended up using a jigsaw for these, which seemed to work pretty well. To ensure that each piece was connected together, I used a small piece of 2x4, with the manufactured edge down, placed it over the joint, and hit it a few times with a hammer. This seemed to help set the joints together without damaging the flooring. The biggest thing with this flooring is that you need to take your time and make sure that each row is fully connected. It helps to start with the plank tilted up. First align the tounge and groove, then push forward and slowly start to bring the plank down into place. You should not be able to see *ANY* of the clear-ish colored joints. I did not push the planks in far enough in the first section of the room and did not realize it until I was practically finished. There are a few areas where you can see the gaps between the planks. I feel as if this should have been stressed a bit more in the directions. The close up picture I've posted is of one of these "gaps". Even with the few small gaps, I am extremely happy with my choice of flooring. The finished look of the floor is awesome and the colors work really well with beige and grey tones. I have (accidentally) dragged furniture across the floor with no scratching. It's also really easy to clean. I've spilled paint and it wipes up very nicely. I finished installing this floor in January and it has been holding up extremely well, even with a lot of foot traffic. I would recommend this flooring.

I thought it would last as well as the cheapest lam that we bought for our out building our dog sleep in and kids play in but we were wrong,

We love our TrafficMASTER Allure Ultra Luxury Vinyl flooring in Vintage Oak Cinnamon! Our original plan was to renovate our kitchen. However, we love the flooring so much that we went back to purchase enough to complete our downstairs floor and a relative’s home as well. With its beautifully crafted imperfections and hand-scraped look, it is amazing how "real" it this flooring appears! Installation was easy even with the angles in our bay window and working with several doorframes. The only tools we needed were a box cutter, rubber mallet (to gently tap some of the planks into place where needed) and a tape measure. Having three children and pets, spills are inevitable. Know this flooring is waterproof brings a great peace of mind and cleanup has never been easier!

I replaced 300 sq.ft. of older rigid laminate flooring in my kitchen with this product. If there are no obstructions, it lays pretty quickly and it's easy to score and cut across the width. It took about 5 evenings to finish the project. A couple of tips: 1. Be prepared to fiddle with the first 2 rows to get tight joints. 2. We ended up having to use a 3-4" wide putty knife and a hammer to tap things in place and that often threw other boards out of place. 3. Complex cuts are easier with a jigsaw or coping saw. Fine metal cutting blades work better. You can make perpendicular cuts with a hacksaw and then score between those cuts but you'll need pliers to snap the piece out. 4. Ripping it lengthwise is best done with a tablesaw or contractor's saw. 5. It is difficult to lay the last row when there are obstructions like baseboard heaters or you're trying to fit it under molding. 6. Remove door molding as necessary to simplify the cuts needed. 7. Make sure the room temperature is well above 65F (18C). 70F (21C) seemed to be high enough to make the boards flexible enough to install. 8. If you can remove all the appliances and furniture from the room, it will go much more quickly. 9. Doors may or may not have to be removed. So far we like the flooring. Time will tell how well it wears, especially near the kitchen door.

One of the features that we were attracted to, was the waterproof finish. This went down very nicely and I never once used a saw. All that was needed was a rubber mallet, a hammer, tape measure, framing square, and a utility knife. I used a scrape piece of the product and the hammer to assist in getting the long joints to seat nicely. The short joints snapped together using a rubber mallet [per instructions]. Cuts were made using a framing square and a utility knife. It could not have been easier. I have installed various type of flooring [as an amateur] and this was probably one of the easiest, not to mention has a beautiful finish. Furthermore, it does not have that 'click clack' sound of Pergo and looks nearly seamless. Installed the whole 14x18 room in about 4-5 hours. Simply put.... Love this product and I would buy it again.

The instructions were great and there was really no need to use any tapping blocks to join the flooring. The frustration, however, is that once you get a piece or two set, and then begin adding additional pieces, the previous joints come undone very easy as well, requiring the installer to go back and re-snap the work. In my opinion, this becomes a labor-intensive floor. I don't think I would encourage the use of this model in the Allure line. Allure has several other products, of which I've installed, which do not seem to share the problem I found with this one.

The floor was easy to install and was easy to cut to fit around the toilet and vents. I like the texture because it gives the floor depth and makes it look like a real wood floor, not to mention it is not as slippery. This floor is not the most expensive, but also is not cheap and does not look cheap. I plan to do more floor work once I can afford to purchase more.
