How many mils is the moisture barrier? I'm going to install laminate flooring over the cement, and usually the moisture barrier has to be 6 mils.

Home Depot informed that I don't need any additional moisture barrier, but would not that void the TrafficMASTER laminate flooring warranty?
Asked by: Leon
John is correct. Mils is an English term, not metric. One mil is 0.001 inches, the underlayment is 80 mils which equals 0.080 inches or approx. 2 millimeters. As for vapor barriers, people usually use polyethylene plastic. Polyethylene, often just referred to as poly, is permeable to water. In other words, water will slowly go through poly. Thicker the poly, the slower the water. So the rule of thumb says that using 6 mil (0.006 inch, approx equal to 0.2 mm) thickness poly as a vapor barrier is a good minimum thickness to use for a vapor barrier. It will not be a total block to water, but it will do a good job. Different plastics have different permeabilities. Polypropylene has a permeability half that of polyethylene so 3 mil polypro would be equivalent of 6 mil polyethylene. The permeability of the underlayment is the combination of this moisture resistance for each layer of the underlayment. Foam will have a value and the "moisture barrier" film will have a value, combined gives a value for the product. More layers, thicker layers, more resistant material layers all combine to stop or slow the water penetration.

Out of the 4 rolls 3 were less than 24 ft. Long. Less waste for me but still I expected a full 25 feet only because I paid for it.

It was easy to install, looks beautiful, and seems very durable. As with all free floating laminate floors it makes a little tapping noise when you walk on it with hard sole shoes. Not really a detriment though - just a characteristic that you quickly get used to. The edges of the planks are beveled which adds to the beauty and rustic look. They may hold dirt, but after 3 weeks it has not been a problem. Highly recommend it and I believe it is a better buy than the more expensive laminate floors. Use a good quality underlayment.

If your looking for floors that don't make any noise when your walking, look for a more expensive product. If you need something cheap or temporary this does just fine.

With the Traffic Master that i put in the living room and remainder of home and rooms there is no problems what so ever you walk on floor and don't hear the noise from the underlayment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New flooring project The underlayment works really good and made the the prep work really fast. easy to keep together with the glue strip, holds the seam together. Completed flooring with the underlayment provides good support for the flooring and you can feel the effect. Overall I will use this product again next time I put down a new floor

The pre-taped edge makes it simple to line up and join edges as you cover your floor. I used this underneath Home Depot's TrafficMaster laminate flooring. It works well and is easy to install. In the picture, you can see just a bit of it to the right as I'm almost done with the kitchen floor.
