Hello! You do not need both. If you use the transition strip with the gripper then tack strips are not needed.

Is this carpet gripper flexible?

Asked by Lily September 3, 2014

Answer

Hi Lily, Since this is carpet strip is solid metal, it will not curve or bend. I'd recommend to use a flexible plastic-based trim sold at your local Home Depot, or by ordering it through your local Home Depot. While there are some available online, a flooring specialist can show you various options that they can order for you. Joseph

Repaired edge of carpet into bathroom. Had to take old gripper off a concrete floor. Cut gripper to fit door frame. Then install new gripper using concrete nails. All went smooth. Carpet holds well again. Only one little mishap. while hammering in concrete nail, I missed the nail with hammer creating a bent section on top edge. Used lineman pliers to straighten back out.
