On initial start why must put setting on smoke till you see pellets then on off then smoke?

Can you just leave it on smoke?
Asked by: Zeek
the pellets have to get hot enough to catch fire in order to function correctly. They kinda function similar to coal....catch on fire, smolder and smoke.

will this smoke a Thanksgiving size turkey?

will this smoke a Thanksgiving size turkey?
Asked by: Jeff
I'm not sure how big your Thanksgiving turkey is. It's nine inches from the top of the grate to the top of the grill hood. If your turkey is bigger (taller) than that, you may want to consider spatchcocking it. Actually, you may want to consider spatchcocking regardless. I find chickens cook much better that way. It will just have a different aesthetic look when it comes to the table.

Purchased one of these early this year, and it did fairly well the first few times I used it. That's when the trouble started. I couldn't get consistent temps. I'd set it to 225 and it'd hover at 250. I'd set it to 180, and it'd hover at 195. Set it to 250, and it'd be at 265. One time I took a picture when it was about 30 degrees difference, and I wrote customer service. A customer service rep named Parker told me, "I do believe you are still with in the degree variance and should be okay." Felt dismissed, but thought I'd keep giving it a go. The next cook was a disaster; I had to trash three slabs and a shoulder. The set temp was 250, and the digital temp reading was 256. However, the actual temp was 469! Burnt everything up! Customer service hasn't responded to my email as of now. Pretty sure I just paid for an expensive piece of trash...

The grill had temperature swings of + or - 40 degrees, which was all documented, and was unable to maintain a constant temperature. Called customer service. He explained to me that a 40 degree swing was acceptable and to be expected from a pellet smoker. After I explained to him that it was absolutely not acceptable, He the stated the outside air temp had a great deal to do with the temp swings; it was 75 degrees that weekend. I was asking them to replace the control panel and I would install it and send back the defective one. They refused and wanted me to send my control panel back to them for inspection. I then asked to speak to his supervisor; he stated that he was not allowed to do that. After receiving no satisfaction from customer service at all, I returned the grill , explained the problems I had, and they immediately gave me a full refund.

It was easy to assemble with two people. The parts fit together really well and the metal is very thick and sturdy. It is actually better than I thought it would be.The digital temperature gauge on the pellet hopper is easy to read a very accurate. It also has a thermometer on the hood of the grill. It has very good instructions and they are easy to follow. The pamphlet even tells you how to start up the grill if it's your first time.Even cleaning instructions. The hopper holds about 10 pounds of pellets and they last a long time.I used ten pounds of pellets and cooked a butt for about 5 hours and had pellets left over in the hopper. This grill also has a barbecue feature that I love because you can control the amount of smoke that you want in your food. The smoke stack is great and looks good.I like that it has a front shelf that you can raise and lower to keep out of the way.The grill does heat up quickly and stays at the temperature you put it at.And it is easy to control the amount of smoke you want.Very sturdy unit.I am going to love using this grill in the future.I can't wait to smoke a pork shoulder or even ribs!! yum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trail Embers Pellet Smoker and Grill - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review My grilling has evolved.... Trail Embers Pellet Smoker and Grill - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review My grilling has evolved. It seems like ages ago that I used my charcoal grill and, after going through a couple of them, finally got a gas grill. I grill out at least three to four times a week throughout the year so my gas grill gets quite a workout. I really missed the taste of the smoke that the charcoal grill offered and even the wood chip smoker boxes for my gas grill didn’t seem to do the trick. I decided to get a smoker. I’m not a purist and I’m really not interested in complicated charcoal smoking processes so, after some research, decided that an electric pellet smoker was my best choice and the Trail Embers Pellet Smoker has proven itself a very good choice. With the electric pellet grill the pellets are fed slowly, via an auger, from a hopper to a small burning pot inside the grill. The speed of feeding the pellets is determined by the desired cooking temperature set on the thermostat control. The Trail Embers Smoker makes cooking a piece of meat for hours a breeze. You fill the hopper, set the cooking temperature, put on the meat and wait for it to get done! How much easier could it be? The first thing I noticed about the Trail Embers Smoker was the weight when it was delivered. It was heavy. Everything, with very few exceptions, is steel. According the manufacturer the thickness of the hood is between 12 and 13 gauge. Since getting it I’ve compared the weight of the steel to other competing brands and find that the Trail Embers was considerably heavier. Even the two wheels are made of steel. The grates are 7mm porcelain-coated steel. I like using cast iron grates for my gas grill but the pellet smoker doesn’t subject the grates to any direct flames like the gas so the Trail Embers grates should hold up. Assembly was very easy and the directions were simple. One thing I was REALLY impressed with is that, with the exception of the nuts holding the wheels on, all of the nuts and bolts were the same size! I’ve never understood why companies insist on producing products that have multiple size nuts and bolts for their assembly. This was a big plus for me. One problem I had with the parts was the blister pack of hardware had broken open and many of the nuts and bolts had fallen into the box and packing material. Be careful throwing the packing material away for that reason. As it was I was short one bolt which I could have gotten a replacement for from Trail Embers but I had another identical bolt from a previous assembly project. Once assembled, the smoker is very sturdy. The legs don’t fold or detach easily so it is not a very portable product if that’s what you’re looking for. I was not looking for that in a smoker. The usage couldn’t be easier. I had never used a pellet grill like this so the idea of not ever seeing the wood or charcoal burning was a new concept. Within minutes of loading pellets and starting the curing process as the manual lays out, the smoker was, well, smoking! I was able to set the cooking temperature for the chicken I was making and away it went! The temperature control is pretty good. I found that the set temperature is held within five to eight degrees throughout the cooking process. I did find that that temperature will fluctuate considerably of the smoker is in the sun. Moving the smoker into a shaded spot helped considerably. There a large temperature gauge on the front of the grill but I really didn’t care for the accuracy which was usually ten or more degrees higher than the selected cooking temperature and it was far worse when in the sun. Trail Embers email support (very good by the way) suggested this should not be the case though. For the most part, this is hands-off cooking operation. There are no direct flames to deal with so you can just leave the lid closed unless something in the recipe calls for activity on the meat. The Trail Embers product is a Pellet Smoker and Grill. The temperature control can be set to HIGH, which is above 375 degrees. I have not used this as a grill since I use my gas grill for that but there was one occasion where the temperature went wildly high. I suspect this was because the temperature control knob was between the marked settings. I found the temperature control knob to be the least “sturdy” component of the grill. It feels cheap and there’s quite a bit of play. There’s a noticeable lock on marked temperatures but the knob still moves some and feels “sloppy”. Does it work? You bet! I’ve smoked chicken, pork loin and pork ribs with terrific results. The temperature stays consistent throughout the smoke, even with the ribs which cooked for six hours. There’s plenty of cooking space with 550 square inches of primary cooking space and 192 square inches of secondary space. The fold out front shelf is great for settings plates, marinate, etc. while cooking. I don’t have to babysit the smoker though I do check the temperature occasionally for consistency and for safety reasons. The last thing I want to do if company is over is to have to constantly maintain the smoker with additional wood, keep flames down or otherwise control the temperature and smoke. The hopper full of pellets was not empty even after cooking the ribs for six hours. Like I said – I’m not a purist. I just want the great flavor without the hassle. The Good - Simple assembly with all of the nuts and bolts the same size! - Excellent temperature control (if in the shade) with five to ten degrees of desired temperature. - Heavy steel throughout. - Large primary cooking space with secondary space as a warming rack above. - Fold out shelf in front. - Email technical support if needed. - Considerably less expensive than other brands The OK - Not easily portable if this is important for you. - Not made in the US. I believe it’s made in China. - Temperature control knob locks into place at marked temperatures but can’t trust setting between the markings - The cooking grates are porcelain-coated steel instead of cast iron. The Not Good - Large temperature gauge is not very accurate – especially in the sun. - Temperature control knob feels “cheap” and has has a lot of play

I had never used one before or even seen one in action for that matter. But I'll say that it's easy to use and was easy to assemble by myself. The flavor from the grill is out of this world. I would highly recommend this grill to anyone!

This is the first one I have ever owned and we have made chicken, pizza, and a Boston butt and all turned out delicious!!! But when we 1st bought it the number on the control panel was hard to see. I emailed the trail embers customer service and they were on top of it. With in the next 5 days I had a new one in my mailbox. Like I said the grill/smoker is a 5 star and so is there customer service team.
