What does "finger-joint" mean?

Asked by: jack
Finger joint is a technique used to combine small wooden surfaces together in the strongest way possible. A specific bit is used that cuts “fingers” into the end or edge of each board. Those fingers get glue and interlocked together. By cutting the fingers into the wood it probably increase the surface area that gets glue by about 400-500%. Called finger joint because it looks like if you put your two hands together with your fingers interlaced. Makes for a tight and strong joint where glueing up two flat edges (which is called a butt joint) would be far weaker. Hope this helps explain your question. Thanks

My particular application hides most of the trim board, so hopefully the flaws won’t be noticed. I purchased 15 pieces with the hope of getting 10 decent ones, and I’m sure I’ll return the the five worst looking pieces.
