Could I use a marine varnish to use it on soffit? Helping for moisture .

Gregc, We would suggest testing this on a small area or on a scrap piece to ensure satisfactory results before completing the entire project.

Is there a trim kit in the same color? If not, what do I do?

Asked by David September 24, 2020

Answer

David, We have two answers for you: First of all, there is a trim kit; it is Model # 311590, Internet # 304529771. Unfortunately, the item is out of stock at this moment. Don't give up on it, though. Here is another option: To terminate a run of shiplap in the field, use mitered returns cut flat on a sliding compound miter saw. This hides the end grain. Another way to stop shiplap in the middle of a wall is to cut miter returns. For outside edges, either butt-joint the shiplap boards and fill the seam (Use a wood filler/caulk to fill in the remaining gaps.) or install mitered trim on both sides of the corner to hide the seam. Hope that this helps.

Wood planks that should have minimal impact to temperature change, possibly some humidity shrinking/expansion, but should also be minimal. As long as its protected from rain, snow, ect. it should be fine.

Answer

Dear Stormy, This product is intended for interior use only because given enough sunlight and water exposure, an untreated wood like this will degrade and also runs the risk of attack by termites, fungi/mold. Although it would make a lovely privacy fence, we recommend a treated wood or vinyl fence for your project.

How do I get more product run out off materials

Jonathan, There is no way to get more product run out of materials when doing shiplap; however, make sure that you off-set your boards so that you can minimize waste.

Hello Michael when you put them together you will see that their will be a small gap between the boards that is the reason why they are called Shiplap boards. I hope that I was able to help answer your question

I put this in my small backyard pub for the ceiling and it looks great! It is not hard to put in but you do need to learn how to do install shiplap correctly for it to look really good. You will have some boards that have defects in them. It isn't that many but know that it will be a few. You can use those boards for your short pieces that you will need as you offset the boards during installation and use up the vaste majority of the board, leaving only the small defect area to be thrown away. The defect is mainly in the tongue part of the board so if there are cases where you do not need the tounge (against a rafter etc.) then maybe you will not have to toss any of it. I had very little scrap left after installing mine. I also recommend using brad nails instead of finishing nails as the hold is plenty strong and it still allows movement of the board as you put the next board above it in without pulling a nail head through the bottom board. Just use a long enough brad to go through the board and into the support boards to hold it good. I used 2 1/4" brads. With brads there is almost an unoticeable nail hole left instead of a larger one with finishing nails. It would be almost impossible to find a wood putty that would match the boards and painting these are rediculous since you would have bought them for their finish anyhow.

Love it. Absolutely beautiful. Everyone that see’s it talks about how good it looks. We did a entire wall in the living room and if they will get it back in stock we are going to use it as wainscoting in the hallway.

Nice looking finish, but the quality doesn't match the price. I was recently working on a built-in entertainment center project and I decided to give this product a try to provide a textured accent for the area behind the wall-mounted TV. I chose this product primarily because of the look of the finish and given the number of other things I had to do to complete this project, having something that was pre-finished was a big plus. I really do like the look of the finish. That's probably the strongest PRO when considering this product. It looks great and wouldn't be trivial to achieve on your own without some effort. However, there are a number of CONS with this product that might have caused me to look elsewhere if I had this project to do over again. First off, there was more waste than I would expect with a pre-packaged product in this price range. These boards are much closer to rough cut than they are to any kind of finish grade – most had a pretty significant amount of cupping and there was a high degree of variability in the width of the tongues and the depth of the corresponding grooves they're intended to fit in. My biggest frustration is with the cupping of the boards. It's hard to achieve a clean finish where the ends of the boards butt against the adjacent areas when they are so significantly cupped. For the price of this product I would have been better off buying finish grade boards and cutting the rabbets for the shiplap on my table saw or even buying rough cut boards and milling them to get evenly dimensioned boards. Of course I would have had to finish them myself, but probably worth it in this case. If you're looking for something that has consistent precise dimensions with tight square edges and no cupping, this is probably not the product you're after. If you're looking for more of a rustic, rough sawn look then you'll likely be satisfied if you plan for 20-25% waste (or more) when you place your order.

I guess I'm just not familiar with shiplap, but this wood is just a step above pallet wood, and barely at that. It's roughly finished, and very expensive for what it is. Equivalent to $15/board. I ordered 6 packages in total (24 boards in total). 4 of 24 were unusable, and that's being generous because really I'd like to say that only about 4 of 24 were acceptable versus usable. The boards were all very roughly finished, unevenly dyed/stained, incompletely died/stained, scuffed, scratched, warped, twisted, miscut, etc. I'm not the type of person that typically leaves bad reviews. This just got me for how expensive it was. Looks OK in pictures, but you don't have to look too closely to start seeing LOTS of flaws.

Product was nicely packaged, and all boards are very consistent. Really worth the extra cost compared to other barn wood tongue and groove competitors. Not a single damaged board out of 5 packages. The color, texture, and consistency was spot on.Total cost with nails, glue trim exc, 320 dollars, and created an awesome accent wall.
