Bring the outdoors in with the look of distressed shiplap siding. Barnwood shiplap boards are made to have a rough sawn surface. Boards can be left unfinished or can be primed/painted to create a reclaimed wood look. The appeal of distressed wood and rustic reclaimed wood makes this perfect for projects. Ideal for making formal areas feel more casual. Due to the natural characteristics of wood, some cupping and warp may occur. These products are not recommended for outdoor applications. Can these be used as exterior cladding?

Asked by Grangor October 14, 2020
1
Answer

Grangor, Depending on your climate and arrangement of the area where you hope to use the shiplap as cladding, you might find that the shiplap is okay for some exterior options, but common sense should tell you that it is essential to get rid of moisture on your wood as quickly as possible because if allowed to stay wet for a prolonged period, you may end up damaging your shiplap. Will it be used on the ceiling of a porch that is on a protected side of the home, or will it be used in an area that has driving rain and loads of snow that accumulate against the product? These questions are for you to consider. For these reasons, we note that exterior applications require an exterior wood protector sealant.

Is there a paint and/or sealant recommended to reduce the significant splintering

Asked by Ed October 9, 2020
1
Answer

Ed, We have Behr brand touch-up paint formulations for minor imperfections. Touch up stain (Glidden Diamond GLD7312 satin base - no tint needed) is intended for small areas only; i.e. cut ends or nail holes. Due to the proprietary coating process, exact color match is not guaranteed. The boards could be trimmed at the end to help with splintering.

Does the charcoal color look black?

Asked by KR September 19, 2020
1
Answer

KR, We believe that the charcoal color is a rich, deep color, but you could contact your preferred Home Depot location to request a sample, if you'd like to verify the depth of color.

Can this shiplap be used in outdoor applications?

Asked by Paul September 9, 2020
1
Answer

Paul, Shiplap is recommended for interior applications, not exterior; however, if you do choose to use it in an area exposed to the elements, a wood sealant to protect the product is required. Best of luck with your project.

Can I apply (with adhesive) to an orange peel type textured wall?

Asked by Tony September 9, 2020
1
Answer

Dear Tony, Shiplap can be installed directly to an orange peel surface as long as the wall itself is even and in moderately good condition. Follow these standard installation instructions: https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/29/292b44d4-6d4c-45f7-9754-04d6b52df90e.pdf

Can you use this as a shower enclosure?

Asked by Mary September 3, 2020
1
Answer

Mary, These boards can be used on walls within a bathroom. We recommend you seal the boards with a wood protector sealant to protect them from moisture. We do not, however, recommend using shiplap for your desired application.

Hi, Can I use this product around a vent-less gas fireplace?

Asked by Joe September 2, 2020
2
Answers

Dear Joe, This shiplap is perfectly safe to install in your fireplace surround if you follow the correct safety codes. Every state varies with its code for fire safety and surround materials. You’ll have to check your local code requirements first, but always follow the National Fire Code and the National Standard Building Code when remodeling or designing your home interior. NATIONAL FIRE CODE : NFPA 211 This ordinance states that all combustible material (wood trim, framing, mantels etc.) must be at least 6 inches from the fireplace opening. For every 1/8 inch of protruding combustible material, an extra inch of clearance is required. NATIONAL STANDARD BUILDING CODE: 2114.3 MASONRY-BUILT FIREPLACES 4114.3.10 All combustible materials and trim must be at least 6 inches from the firebox opening. If more than 1 ½ inches (38mm) of material projects from the face of the fireplace, you will need additional clearance equal to the length of extension beyond 1 ½ inches. If above the fireplace there is more than 1 ½inches (38mm) of material projecting from the fireplace opening, you will need 12 inches of clearance from the top of the opening. For maximum security, consider using a noncombustible material in your fireplace surround before adding shiplap. Many people will use tile, marble, stone, brick, or steel as surround materials directly around the fireplace opening for their gas or wood-burning fireplaces. Hope you find this information helpful for designing your new surround.

can I install each plank separately? so there is a space in between them?

Asked by KateV September 2, 2020
1
Answer

Dear KateV, Each board does need to be install separately, but there should not be a large space between them. Here is a link to the installation instructions that might be helpful: https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/29/292b44d4-6d4c-45f7-9754-04d6b52df90e.pdf. Best of luck on your project.

I want to do one wall in shiplap do you have installers?

Asked by RO12 September 2, 2020
1
Answer

Dear RO12, It would be best for you to go into or contact your local Home Depot store as we do not have information regarding your location. Your store probably has a listing of area handymen (and women) that you might be interested in getting an estimate from for the job. Enjoy your new shiplap.

Recommend this product. It is a bit pricey but having the boards already painted and distressed made it worth while. Bought 6 packs and only had one board with a crack in the corner. I was able to work around that. We did a color match at Home Depot and bought a sampler of paint to touch up end grain cuts that appeared or any minor imperfections. Love the outcome.

Overall, this product looks great installed. We are pleased with our unfinished job. But after putting up 42 boards, I am 2 short though I bought 12% extra. I went off of the coverage area of 5.375 (6" board), thinking that considered the overlap. I should have known better. Use 4.75" times the length to do your math and you will be a lot closer to accurate. It is better to buy 20% more than needed and return what you do not need. I had one board that was 1/8" narrower than all others, but that was the only one out of 42. It will get ripped in my final row. There is some cupping and curving in some boards, but I was able to nail them flat. The worst ones were used for cutting shorter pieces. I had no waste, which is great.

The end result is beautiful. I took one star off because many of the boards are warped or bowed and required quite a bit of force to get them into position. Extra nails held them and there haven't been any issues. I would do it again to get these results.

Easy to install and looks great! Having it already painted makes it even easier. It's a little pricey for the coverage. We liked it so much that we did the bathroom in addition to the kitchen accent wall.

Boards were straight and 95+%!of them were without issue. I’ve used these boards in to different rooms in two different states and very happy with the consistency and ease of use. I did a 15x 10 foot wall and it took about 3-4 hours.
