Questions & Answers

Im doing a 2x2 grid. I was gonna install mains 2ft apart, but your instructions show 4ft apart. Will either method work

Asked by: Will7886
You can use mains 2' apart, but it is more costly, and does make tile insertion at the support wires more difficult. There are some good reasons to use more main grid though. The main is stonger, and be staggering the connection point of the 12' segments it's easier to have a super flat plane of ceiling. Additionally, if you are hanging heavier fixtures, you have more load capacity. If you choose to do this, you'll want to squeeze the hanger wire tighter than typical on the mains, this will minimize the insertion problems I mentioned. In the past there were 1' grid you could buy, so a designer would sometimes have a set of mains 1'oc, fill it with light strips, and then use 2' or 4' centers next to this. I've also seen an alternation of 2' and 4' rows and tile, there can be a lot of creativity in a 'simple' suspended ceiling! One specific place where I have seen mains on 2' centers was in a rec room project, where the distance from wall to wall was under 12'. wile still needing intermeadiate support, this allowed for a fast install. A word of cuation either way, the orientation would force you to use 2' x 4' tile or fixtures parallel to the mains. Good luck, Joe

My room width is 14ft. Do they make longer main tees or can these snap together?

Asked by: Cap
They do snap together, but if the room is longer and the 14" is shorter I'd consider using the mains on the long run. This makes for a cleaner look, utilizes material better, and helps you stay flat or on plane better. Nothing longer is available, they do snap together. If you go that way, make sure to stagger the connection points so they are not in a line. Good luck! Joe

Asked by: Andy
Andy Thank you for your question. The Pro Desk can assist you in estimating what materials you need, or you can use our online Ceilings Material Estimator by going to www.usg.com and selecting "Installation and Technical" in the upper right hand corner. Your suspended ceiling will require wall mold, 12' main tees, 4' cross tees and 12 gauge hanger wire. If you plan to use 2' x 2' ceiling tiles you will also need 2' cross tees.

I bought and opened a pack of these but did not need them all, am I able to return them for individually?

Asked by: Steve
At least at my Home depot, the per piece price and the 20 pack price per piece are the same. I had extra main tees and was able to return them. The process for returning felt a bit strange, and I hope it is not the norm since it took more time than it should have. They had me return a full box to the original charge account, then deducted the returned piece count from the full count of 20, then charged me for the difference, (that i did not return/had used) While strange, it works out fine. A bit awkward. the associates were pleasant and all, explaining the sku on the box of twenty did not match the pc sku. So to concisely answer, yes you can return the remaining pcs.
