A:  Donald, The USG Durock® Brand Cement Board with EdgeGuard™ is a strong, water-durable tile base for tub and shower areas, that will accept tile. Great as a tile backer
I used this as a backer for tile installation in a shower. It cut relatively easily; just a straight edge and a utility knife. The knife blades did dull relatively quickly, but it had sounded like that's pretty typical so I had extra on hand. I was also able to cut out openings in it using an orbital jigsaw. Make sure the board is supported well if using power tools to avoid accidental damage to the board. The boards are somewhat heavy to install up on a wall by yourself, so a helper would definitely be handy to have. If you don't have a helper available, you can use a temporary ledger board right below where you need to hang it and shim it into position from there. I used a waterproofing membrane between the cement board and the tile which bonded over it without any issues. Also make sure you purchase the correct fasteners... I had some leftovers from another project that I realized after the fact were not the correct ones for cement board. I then purchased the correct ones and doubled up on the amount of fasteners versus trying to replace the existing ones.
