Since I was using this on interior bathroom walls, and not a shower wall, I used joint compound over top of seam tape. Joint compound is much easier to sand, and the finish is smoother.
Qep self adheasive tape this mesh tape is rated for cement board there for thin set which cement based wont affect the integrity of the tape thanks Jim.
You can use thinset and set it to the concrete or block walls but why are you wanting to do this you can just tile directly to the walls. Use a redgaurd if wanting to keep it waterproof.
