Q:How long it takes to dry?
by|May 13, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Depends on temp, humidity, and how thick you apply.  For most situations best to plan for 24 hours between coats.  Thinner coats and using fan/fans to circulate air will shorten drying time.

A:  I put on a coat & let it dry overnight. A tip - put it on the wall, let it set up a while, then take a moist sponge (or more aggressively a Scotch Brite Pad) & flatten out the imperfections. Lessens the amount of sanding & dust & speeds up the job.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. The drying time for ready mixed joint compounds varies depending on temperature, humidity and how thick it was applied. Ready mixed joint compounds can be applied up to 1/8" thick. The minimum room temperature should be 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the room should be well ventilated. There is no specific drying time that can be given due to the differences in jobsite conditions. If you are unsure if the compound is completely dry you can test it by applying plastic film over an area and taping it on all 4 sides. Wait overnight and if droplets of moisture appear on the underside of the film then the compound is not yet dry.

          Answer This Question

A:  Adriane Thank you for your inquiry. Sheetrock All Purpose Joint Compound is a full weight product. For something lighter weight and easier to sand use Sheetrock Plus 3 joint compound which weighs up to 25% less than conventional-weight compounds so handling and applying are simpler, easier and faster. Hope this helps.

Q:can I add water to make it go on smoother

              Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. When taping and finishing joints, thinning with water may improve joint compound application. Add clean water in half-pint increments, remix and trial apply until preferred consistency is reached. Over dilution causes abnormal shrinkage, poor bond and other negative effects. Do not mix with any other material. Hope this helps.

A:  Typically you do not need any water. Working it with a 6” sparkle knife after a few times makes it very loose.  Work it on the drywall in consecutive passes (ie6”, them 8 or 10” and finally with a 12 or 14” knife.  Scrape with knife and then run a damp sponge to smooth and feather the edges.

                      Inconsistent from bucket to bucket
I bought two buckets on two different days. The first bucket was awesome. Great consistency, easy to work, easy to sand, but it ran out. I went a few days later and got the second bucket and it was completely different. The first thing I noticed was the coloring was a bright white compared to the first bucket. When I went to scoop it out it was very runny with chunks in it. Most of it ran off the knife before making it into the mud pan. It would hardly stick to the ceiling at all. I left the house after applying it and got lunch. I came back to a strong urine smell. I followed my nose right to the joint compound. It smelled awful. Now that it's dry it doesn't stink anymore, but I'm afraid to sand it.

                      Smooth and easy
First time I’ve ever used joint compound and I fell in love. Goes on smoothly. The container helps it to not dry out. I’ve currently had mine open and have been using a week, still soft, no hard spots. Wait 24 hours, light sand and it’s a perfect wall.

Perfect for repairing garage ceiling. Actually this is very smooth and would work anywhere. Garage ceiling is having issues - it's 40 years old and was poorly installed with nails, and sloppy joint treatment. So needed to replace several sections and I am inserting screws and re-taping and then covering the joints. This compound spreads easily, no dripping and is hiding the tape and screws with minimal thickness applied. Several areas are tight around where the garage door rails attach. This compound is easy to use in these tight areas with little mess. It spreads where I what it. I am letting it dry over night. Still have a lot to do before painting.

I like the packaging. When using smaller quantities, good to use the bucket. The product in a plastic bag in a box means later use will result in dried pieces falling back into the product. But with the bucket it all stays fresh, without any "trash" being introduced into the product.
