Questions & Answers

Would this work outside to place in the ground to help keep underground pipes protected from ground frost?

Asked by: Judy
No. This is foil faced denim. You would not want it to get wet or it will have no insulating value.

can this be put in a basement ceiling to drown out sound from above
Asked by: nana
It will probably help a bit, but it's made for dishwashers to not only reduce noise, but keep heat in as well. There are better sound dampening products such as rigid foam insulation. In my opinion, the best would be acoustic FeltForms, but they are expensive!

Which direction do you put the foil?

Car floorboard - I have a mid engine car and would like to keep heat out of the trunk. I've seen two opposing answers stating which direction to put the foil. Does it go next to the heat source or material next to the heat source?
Asked by: dgraves
material toward heat source. Foil out.

I purchased this to use as a sound dampener in a basement room, to try and keep some sound from traveling to the upper floors, via the heat duct and cold air return. It seems to have worked fairly well for that purpose, does it's job as thermal insulation just as well. I also purchased the smaller 6 foot long roll as well, this was significantly more dense than the large 24 foot roll (see pics). But overall this is a good product that seems to do what it's intended to do. It was very easy to cut and fit where I needed it. It is easy to handle and affixes with simple metal duct tape. It's old blue jeans, so there is no itch at all. It's kind of interesting to look at as well. My only negative was the significant difference in the density of the two rolls of the "same" product. But it hasn't seemed to affect its intended purpose of thermal insulating. I was hoping to achieve an outcome outside of its intended purpose. That's where the density difference was less than ideal for me. Otherwise it's solid and i would recomend it.

They are both easy to work with, basically feels like jeans, no itch. The smaller 48"x6' that i received was much more dense to the feel, by 50%. Don't know if that was a fluke or not. I got this in an attempt to keep noise down from a basement room via the ductwork. It seems to work reasonably well for that, maybe a 4/10. Thicker is the better of the two. But thermally it's hard to tell the difference. Both are the same result. If say 9/10. It's medium duty grade IMO. It's old pants and foil after all. But did it's intended job admirably with a little sound muffling as a bonus.

It's not necessary but a paper face mask and goggles are useful.... plus a massive lint roller. There is an incredible amount of fuzz produced when cutting this stuff. I used thi as a base layer on my conversion van and attached with 3M 90 adhesive spray.

I put it around the water heater used silver tape to attach top of product to the top of the water heater, taped the side together with a 2” overlapp. The remaining piece I formed around the top being careful to leave a gap for exhaust. Turned down the water temp.

I glued product to dishwasher (foil side out), then used aluminum tape to make sure edges did not catch the cabinet as I pushed washer back in. Have not done sound test yet but am expecting it to outperform very thin factory sound blanket.
